The main goal of this paper is to reveal the symplectic structure related to renormalization of circle maps with breaks. We first show that iterated renormalizations of [Formula: see text] circle diffeomorphisms with [Formula: see text] breaks, [Formula: see text], with given size of breaks, converge to an invariant family of piecewise Möbius maps, of dimension [Formula: see text]. We prove that this invariant family identifies with a relative character variety [Formula: see text] where [Formula: see text] is a [Formula: see text]-holed torus, and that the renormalization operator identifies with a sub-action of the mapping class group [Formula: see text]. This action allows us to introduce the symplectic form which is preserved by renormalization. The invariant symplectic form is related to the symplectic form described by Guruprasad et al. [Group systems, groupoids, and moduli spaces of parabolic bundles, Duke Math. J. 89(2) (1997) 377–412], and goes back to the earlier work by Goldman [The symplectic nature of fundamental groups of surfaces, Adv. Math. 54(2) (1984) 200–225]. To the best of our knowledge the connection between renormalization in the nonlinear setting and symplectic dynamics had not been brought to light yet.

Abstract We initiate the study of Schrödinger operators with ergodic potentials defined over circle map dynamics, in particular over circle diffeomorphisms. For analytic circle diffeomorphisms and a set of rotation numbers satisfying Yoccoz’s ${{\mathcal{H}}}$ arithmetic condition, we discuss an extension of Avila’s global theory. We also give an abstract version and a short proof of a sharp Gordon-type theorem on the absence of eigenvalues for general potentials with repetitions. Coupled with the dynamical analysis, we obtain that, for every $C^{1+BV}$ circle diffeomorphism, with a super Liouville rotation number and an invariant measure $\mu $, and for $\mu $-almost all $x\in{{\mathbb{T}}}^1$, the corresponding Schrödinger operator has purely continuous spectrum for every Hölder continuous potential $V$.

<p style='text-indent:20px;'>We prove quantitative statistical stability results for a large class of small <inline-formula><tex-math id="M1">\begin{document}$ C^{0} $\end{document}</tex-math></inline-formula> perturbations of circle diffeomorphisms with irrational rotation numbers. We show that if the rotation number is Diophantine the invariant measure varies in a Hölder way under perturbation of the map and the Hölder exponent depends on the Diophantine type of the rotation number. The set of admissible perturbations includes the ones coming from spatial discretization and hence numerical truncation. We also show linear response for smooth perturbations that preserve the rotation number, as well as for more general ones. This is done by means of classical tools from KAM theory, while the quantitative stability results are obtained by transfer operator techniques applied to suitable spaces of measures with a weak topology.</p>
