AbstractThe “official” history of connexive logic was written in 2012 by Storrs McCall who argued that connexive logic was founded by ancient logicians like Aristotle, Chrysippus, and Boethius; that it was further developed by medieval logicians like Abelard, Kilwardby, and Paul of Venice; and that it was rediscovered in the 19th and twentieth century by Lewis Carroll, Hugh MacColl, Frank P. Ramsey, and Everett J. Nelson. From 1960 onwards, connexive logic was finally transformed into non-classical calculi which partly concur with systems of relevance logic and paraconsistent logic. In this paper it will be argued that McCall’s historical analysis is fundamentally mistaken since it doesn’t take into account two versions of connexivism. While “humble” connexivism maintains that connexive properties (like the condition that no proposition implies its own negation) only apply to “normal” (e.g., self-consistent) antecedents, “hardcore” connexivism insists that they also hold for “abnormal” propositions. It is shown that the overwhelming majority of the forerunners of connexive logic were only “humble” connexivists. Their ideas concerning (“humbly”) connexive implication don’t give rise, however, to anything like a non-classical logic.

Lewis Carroll, both logician and writer, suggested a logical paradox containing furthermore two connotations (connotations or metaphors are inherent in literature rather than in mathematics or logics). The paradox itself refers to implication demonstrating that an intermediate implication can be always inserted in an implication therefore postponing its ultimate conclusion for the next step and those insertions can be iteratively and indefinitely added ad lib, as if ad infinitum. Both connotations clear up links due to the shared formal structure with other well-known mathematical observations: (1) the paradox of Achilles and the Turtle; (2) the transitivity of the relation of equality. Analogically to (1), one can juxtapose the paradox of the Liar (for Lewis Carroll’s paradox) and that of the arrow (for “Achilles and the Turtle”), i.e. a logical paradox, on the one hand, and an aporia of motion, on the other hand, suggesting a shared formal structure of both, which can be called “ontological”, on which basis “motion” studied by physics and “conclusion” studied by logic can be unified being able to bridge logic and physics philosophically in a Hegelian manner: even more, the bridge can be continued to mathematics in virtue of (2), which forces the equality (for its property of transitivity) of any two quantities to be postponed analogically ad lib and ad infinitum. The paper shows that Hilbert arithmetic underlies naturally Lewis Carroll’s paradox admitting at least three interpretations linked to each other by it: mathematical, physical and logical. Thus, it can be considered as both generalization and solution of his paradox therefore naturally unifying the completeness of quantum mechanics (i.e. the absence of hidden variables) and eventual completeness of mathematics as the same and isomorphic to the completeness of propositional logic in relation to set theory as a first-order logic (in the sense of Gödel (1930)’s completeness theorems).

Os romances Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) e Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There (1871), ambos de autoria de Lewis Carroll (1831-1898), tiveram êxito estrondoso desde o momento de seu lançamento. Conforme relata Carolyn Sigler (2015), os livros já figuravam entre os favoritos das crianças vitorianas no final do século XIX e, hoje, configuram-se como as obras mais citadas depois da Bíblia e das peças de Shakespeare. Seu sucesso inicial foi imediatamente sucedido por uma diversidade de hipertextos que responderam e celebraram os livros de Carroll. Dentre eles, destaca-se o conto “Amelia and the Dwarfs”, de autoria de Juliana Horatia Ewing (1841-1885) e publicado em 1870, na Aunt Judy’s Magazine, revista dedicada ao público infantil. Este artigo busca fornecer uma possibilidade de leitura dessa obra, sobretudo a partir de seu discurso de duas vozes (GILBERT; GUBAR, 2020): se, superficialmente, a narradora apresenta uma história consonante à moralidade que marcava as histórias infantis da época; numa camada mais profunda, manifesta-se uma protagonista que vence as desventuras através de sua sagacidade e capacidade de dissimulação. Justifica-se esta contribuição a partir dos pressupostos da crítica feminista, que busca redescobrir escritoras não-canônicas e propor novas leituras de textos considerados menores ou de pouca importância na história da literatura (PAUL, 1997).

In the present study, we investigate the post-editese phenomenon, i.e., the unique features that set machine translated post-edited texts apart from human-translated texts. We use two literary texts, namely, the English children's novel by Lewis Carroll Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (AW) and Paula Hawkins' popular book The Girl on the Train (TGOTT) translated from English into Brazilian-Portuguese to investigate whether the post-editese features can be found on the surface of the post-edited (PE) texts. In addition, we examine how the features found in the PE texts differ from the features encountered in the human-translated (HT) and machine translation (MT) versions of the same source text. Results revealed evidence for post-editese for TGOTT only with PE versions being more similar to the MT output than to the HT texts.

Intenta-se com este escrito, abordar o conceito de sujeito discursivo em nossa contemporaneidade imersa da era tecnológica e na cibercultura. Assim, tomando o sujeito na urdidura da Análise do Discurso e da psicanálise lacaniana, empreendeu-se um percurso teórico onde a noção de sujeito foi pensada em articulação com o conceito de ciberespaço e, à vista disso, os autores tomaram a obra literária “Alice no país das maravilhas” de Lewis Carroll, como materialidade metafórica para pensar o sujeito nas malhas do digital e na digitalização inscrita na cidade. A partir de um gesto de análise de uma nova versão da música “Não existe amor em SP” lançada na pandemia de Covid-19 em 2020, foi possível realizar em um gesto analítico em que o sujeito do discurso comparece enquanto um efeito de uma denúncia.

AbstractWithin the climate science community, useable climate science has been understood as quantitative, usually as a best estimate together with a quantified uncertainty. Physical scientists are trained to produce numbers and to draw general, abstract conclusions. In general, however, people relate much better to stories and to events they have experienced, which are inevitably contingent and particular. Sheila Jasanoff has argued elsewhere that the process of abstraction in climate science “detaches knowledge from meaning”. Perhaps useable climate science is, then, meaningful climate science. We argue here that the development of meaningful climate science can be achieved by adopting a storyline approach to climate variability and change. By ‘storyline’ we mean a physically self-consistent unfolding of past events or of plausible future events or pathways. Storylines represent a combination of qualitative and quantitative information, where the qualitative element represents a packaging or contextualization of the quantitative aspects, which ensures that data can be meaningfully interpreted. Viewed from this perspective, we show that physical climate storylines can be aligned with several well-established vehicles for translation of knowledge between diverse communities: narratives, boundary objects, and data journeys. They can therefore be used as a ‘pidgin language’ to enrich the set of tools available to climate scientists to bring meaning to climate knowledge. “And what is the use of a book”, thought Alice, “without pictures or conversations?” (Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland).
