In this paper, a generalized tachyonic dark energy scenario is presented in the framework of a homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker (FLRW) flat universe, in which a noncanonical scalar field is coupled to gravity nonminimally. By utilizing the Noether symmetry method, we found the explicit form of both potential density and coupling function, as a function of the scalar field. It is found that the tachyon field acts as the source of inflation and accelerates the evolution of the universe in the early times considerably. While, in the late times, gravitational sources are a pressureless matter field together with the tachyon field, which is the nature of dark energy and plays an essential role in the deceleration-acceleration phase transition of the universe. Further, the role of the coefficient function of tachyon potential, alongside the potential, is considered in the evolution of the universe. It is shown that this model involves a cosmological degeneracy in the sense that different coupling parameters and tachyonic potentials may be equivalent to the same cosmological standards such as the cosmic acceleration, age, equation of state and mean Hubble of the FLRW universe. The physical characteristics of the main cosmological observables are studied in detail, which suggests that the generalized tachyon field is a remarkable dark energy candidate.

The author sets out to respond to the student complaint that ‘Philosophy did not answer “the big questions”’, in particular the question ‘What is the meaning of life?’ The response first outlines and evaluates the most common religious answer, that human life is given a meaning by God who created us and informs us that this life is just the pilgrim way to the next eternal life in heaven. He then discusses the response that, from the point of view of post-Darwinian science and the evolution of the universe and all that is in it, human life on Earth must be afforded no more meaning than the meaning we would give to a microscopic planaria or to some creature on another planet in a distant universe. All things including human creatures on Planet Earth just exist for a time and that is that. There is no plan or purpose. In the last sections the author outlines the view that it is we humans ourselves who give meaning to our lives by our choices of values or things that are worth pursuing and through our resulting sense of achievement or the opposite. Nevertheless the question ‘What is the meaning of life?’ can mean quite different things in different contexts, and so merit different if related answers. From one point of view one answer may lie in terms of the love of one human for another.

Abstract Two hypotheses stand out in describing the evolution of the Universe. The predominant one predicts that the current expansion began at a certain instant and will not preserve any variation of energy that performs work; apparent flat Universe (Ω = 1) is advocated by relativistic calculations and observational data, with an end or thermal death at its maximum expansion (3D Space). The other hypothesis considers that the Universe is cyclical (always alternating phases of expansion and contraction). This proposal aims to demonstrate that both hypotheses can be correct by not being distinct, but complementary. Supported by the immutability of physical laws, analyses of concepts such as space, mass, energy, gravity, spin, and entropy define an exclusive presence of 1D Space in the minimum and maximum expansion states of the Universe. With our 3D Space Universe created and existing between these extreme states, every dynamic is outlined and completes the usual relativity. The concept of complete rest energy (1D Space) was able to be applied, demonstrating that the complete evolution of the Universe is spatially dynamic in a perpetual time dimension, always recreating our Universe.

Some of the most important quintessential inflation scenarios, such as the Peebles–Vilenkin model, are described in detail. These models are able to explain the early- and late-time accelerated expansions of our universe, and the phase transition from the end of inflation to the beginning of kination where the adiabatic evolution of the universe was broken in order to produce enough particles to reheat the universe with a viable temperature, thereby aligning with the Hot Big Bang universe. In addition, while considering the reheating to be due to the gravitational production of superheavy particles conformally coupled to gravity, we checked that the considered scenarios do not suffer problems due to the overproduction of gravitational waves at the end of inflation, and thus the validity of Big Bang nucleosynthesis is preserved.
