Leather is three-dimensional matrix possessing unique properties which makes it more comfortable for daily use. Garments made from leathers are preferred choice owing to their multifaceted properties as compared to textiles in the colder regions. In the present study, an attempt has been made to evaluate the influence of phenolic syntan and synthetic fatliquor on the sewability and physical properties of post tanned leathers. From the experimental results, it is observed that the concentration of phenolic syntan and fatliquor influences leather sewability. Optical microscopic images of leathers also show that they are more compact and tighter with higher percentage of syntan. The study provides an insight in understanding the optimum usage of post tanning chemicals for better sewing properties without affecting the leather matrix adversely.

In the current study, we use chrome free tanning process for the production of glove leather and to achieve the required properties without any compromising the quality. To develop a suitable post tanning system for making glove with good softness, run and strength properties. Glove leather predominantly made using chrome tanning system. Conventionally glove leather is done by long liming and ageing in pickling for better fibre splitting in order to achieve the run property. Production Time is very high due to long liming and ageing in pickling. Production cost can significantly reduce if the processing time for making glove is reduced. Acrylic followed by Glutaraldehyde combination tanning system adopted for chrome free tanning option. Long liming and ageing in pickle will be replaced with rapid fibre splitting process.

Over last few years, polyurethane (PU) has been applied in a number of areas because of its remarkable features, such as excellent mechanical strength, good abrasion resistance, toughness, low temperature flexibility, etc. More specifically, PU can be easily “tailor made” to meet specific demands. This structure–property relationship endows great potential for use in wider applications. With the improvement of living standards, ordinary polyurethane products cannot meet people’s growing needs for comfort, quality, and novelty. This has recently drawn enormous commercial and academic attention to the development of functional polyurethane. Among the major applications, PU is one of the prominent retanning agents and coating materials in leather manufacturing. This review gives a summary of academic study in the field of functional PU as well as its recent application in leather manufacture.
