AbstractWhile the dynamics of transcendental entire functions in periodic Fatou components and in multiply connected wandering domains are well understood, the dynamics in simply connected wandering domains have so far eluded classification. We give a detailed classification of the dynamics in such wandering domains in terms of the hyperbolic distances between iterates and also in terms of the behaviour of orbits in relation to the boundaries of the wandering domains. In establishing these classifications, we obtain new results of wider interest concerning non-autonomous forward dynamical systems of holomorphic self maps of the unit disk. We also develop a new general technique for constructing examples of bounded, simply connected wandering domains with prescribed internal dynamics, and a criterion to ensure that the resulting boundaries are Jordan curves. Using this technique, based on approximation theory, we show that all of the nine possible types of simply connected wandering domain resulting from our classifications are indeed realizable.

We study inverse potential problems with source term the divergence of some unknown (R 3 -valued) measure supported in a plane; e.g., inverse magnetization problems for thin plates. We investigate methods for recovering a magnetization μ by penalizing the measure-theoretic total variation norm kμk T V , and appealing to the decomposition of divergence-free measures in the plane as superpositions of unit tangent vector fields on rectifiable Jordan curves. In particular, we prove for magnetizations supported in a plane that T V -regularization schemes always have a unique minimizer, even in the presence of noise. It is further shown that T V -norm minimization (among magnetizations generating the same field) uniquely recovers planar magnetizations in the following two cases: (i) when the magnetization is carried by a collection of sufficiently separated line segments and a set that is purely 1-unrectifiable; (ii) when a superset of the support is tree- like. We note that such magnetizations can be recovered via T V -regularization schemes in the zero noise limit by taking the regularization parameter to zero. This suggests definitions of sparsity in the present infinite dimensional context, that generate results akin to compressed sensing.

In this paper, we propose new definitions of digital Jordan curves and digital Jordan surfaces. We start with introducing and studying closure operators on a given set that are associated with n-ary relations (n > 1 an integer) on this set. Discussed are in particular the closure operators associated with certain n-ary relations on the digital line ℤ. Of these relations, we focus on a ternary one equipping the digital plane ℤ2 and the digital space ℤ3 with the closure operator associated with the direct product of two and three, respectively, copies of this ternary relation. The connectedness provided by the closure operator is shown to be suitable for defining digital curves satisfying a digital Jordan curve theorem and digital surfaces satisfying a digital Jordan surface theorem.

We investigate the Hilbert boundary-value problem for Beltrami equations $\overline\partial f=\mu\partial f$ with singularities in generalized quasidisks $D$ whose Jordan boundary $\partial D$ consists of a countable collection of open quasiconformal arcs and, maybe, a countable collection of points. Such generalized quasicircles can be nowhere even locally rectifiable but include, for instance, all piecewise smooth curves, as well as all piecewise Lipschitz Jordan curves. Generally speaking, generalized quasidisks do not satisfy the standard $(A)-$condition in PDE by Ladyzhenskaya-Ural'tseva, in particular, the outer cone touching condition, as well as the quasihyperbolic boundary condition by Gehring-Martio that we assumed in our last paper for the uniformly elliptic Beltrami equations. In essence, here, we admit any countable collection of singularities of the Beltrami equations on the boundary and arbitrary singularities inside the domain $D$ of a general nature. As usual, a point in $\overline D$ is called a singularity of the Beltrami equation, if the dilatation quotient $K_{\mu}:=(1+|\mu|)/(1-|\mu|)$ is not essentially bounded in all its neighborhoods. Presupposing that the coefficients of the problem are arbitrary functions of countable bounded variation and the boundary data are arbitrary measurable with respect to the logarithmic capacity, we prove the existence of regular solutions of the Hilbert boundary-value problem. As a consequence, we derive the existence of nonclassical solutions of the Dirichlet, Neumann, and Poincar\'{e} boundary-value problems for equations of mathematical physics with singularities in anisotropic and inhomogeneous media.

In this paper, we consider the realization of configuration of limit cycles of piecewise linear systems on the plane. We show that any configuration of finite number of Jordan curves can be realized by a discontinuous piecewise linear system with two zones separated by a continuous curve.

AbstractThe Plateau–Douglas problem asks to find an area minimizing surface of fixed or bounded genus spanning a given finite collection of Jordan curves in Euclidean space. In the present paper we solve this problem in the setting of proper metric spaces admitting a local quadratic isoperimetric inequality for curves. We moreover obtain continuity up to the boundary and interior Hölder regularity of solutions. Our results generalize corresponding results of Jost and Tomi-Tromba from the setting of Riemannian manifolds to that of proper metric spaces with a local quadratic isoperimetric inequality. The special case of a disc-type surface spanning a single Jordan curve corresponds to the classical problem of Plateau, in proper metric spaces recently solved by Lytchak and the second author.
