Roberto Arlt and the Readers of Romance

This essay examines the role of female readership in the work of the Argentine writer Roberto Arlt. I argue that the conflicted and embodied status of the reading public in Arlt’s work is crystallized in the female (or feminized) reader of romances. Through this figure, the Arltian text reveals the pervasiveness of normative sentimental discourse, and narrates how this discourse circulates, impacts, and is absorbed by the bodies of its readers. These critiques emerge quite clearly in Arlt’s novels, where the author enjoys greater freedom of expression. However, his periodical publications and theater necessarily employ a more oblique critical strategy. Focusing on his aguafuertes, the short story “Eugenio Delmonte y los 1300 novios” and the play Trescientos millones, I show how Arlt interpolates his readers as readers of romance while also enacting a rupture in the boundary between the work and the medium in which it appears, encouraging the reader’s awareness of the influence of those media in her daily life.

Walking the city and the neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires. Argentine Literature in the 1920s and 1930s

This article presents an overview of Buenos Aires, city and neighbourhoods, from the viewpoints of several authors who participated in the literary life of the 1920s and 1930s, portraying the evolution of modernity and the social question –inequalities. Novels, short stories, poems and magazines from the period in question were used to frame these issues and unravel the objectives set. It concludes by exposing the variety and diversity of the city and the neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires, as well as the people who inhabited them and the Buenos Aires literary currents of the period, headed by Jorge Luis Borges, on the one hand (Florida group), and Roberto Arlt (Boedo group), on the other.

Representaciones del cambio urbano: Buenos Aires en dos novelas de Payró y Arlt

Entre Divertidas aventuras del nieto de Juan Moreira (1911) y El juguete rabioso (1926), Buenos Aires deja de representarse como mero escenario literario para convertirse en un espacio urbano moderno que busca su relato. En esa búsqueda, los protagonistas de ambas novelas reescriben el modo literario de la picaresca, pero, mientras el primero consigue articular los mecanismos para escalar socialmente, el personaje de Roberto Arlt experimenta la incapacidad de responder adecuadamente al mensaje de la ciudad para conseguir el mismo objetivo: Silvio Astier se verá inmerso en una ciudad progresivamente ilegible que terminará por expulsarlo. Así, el personaje de Roberto J. Payró plantea una continuidad entre la ciudad y su trayecto: el espacio recoge y habilita su ascenso; en cambio, Silvio advertirá una suerte de incompatibilidad con el entorno que lo irá arrinconando hacia la quiebra moral y la abyección. De ahí surgen dos estrategias narrativas diferenciadas que sintonizan los procesos modernizadores que vive la ciudad con la emergencia de la novela moderna argentina.

O presente artigo comenta uma tradução de “El cazador de orquídeas”, de Roberto Arlt. Depois de apresentar o conto e de situá-lo brevemente no projeto criativo do autor, o comentário concentra-se na discussão das decisões tradutórias referentes a marcas de oralidade fonéticas, lexicais e morfossintáticas, tomando como referência a reflexão de Britto (2012). A tradução completa do conto encontra-se ao final do trabalho.

El presente trabajo interroga un texto literario, El juguete rabioso de Roberto Arlt, publicado en Buenos Aires en 1926, entendido como un contexto de convivialidad surgido del universo de las representaciones culturales. Para ello, partimos de una constelación de conceptos procedentes de la teoría y de la crítica literaria que resultan funcionales a la hora de situar las posibles implicancias de la convivialidad en el campo de las creaciones literarias de América Latina. Los tortuosos pactos de convivialidad en la Buenos Aires de principios del siglo XX, que atañen tanto la psicología individual como las representaciones sociales, serán asediados en este artículo a partir del significado de los recorridos por el espacio urbano en transformación y de la centralidad de la literatura como instrumento de consumo y de producción.
