Purpose: To investigate the correlation between retinal capillary structure and macular function in patients with idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) by using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and microperimetry.Methods: This retrospective and observational study included 30 idiopathic ERM eyes of 30 consecutive patients. OCTA was performed to evaluate macular microvasculature including the superficial capillary plexus, deep capillary plexus, and foveal avascular zone. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and microperimetry were measured at baseline and 3 months after surgery. Associations between macular microvasculature and visual function were assessed.Results: Visual function including BCVA and macular sensitivity improved significantly at 3 months post-operatively (p < 0.001). At baseline, BCVA was positively correlated with foveal or parafoveal sensitivities and negatively correlated with central foveal thickness (p < 0.05). Pre-operative foveal sensitivity was significantly correlated with the vessel density of foveal or parafoveal superficial capillary plexus (p < 0.05). A multiple regression model revealed that pre-operative vessel density of foveal deep capillary plexus was an independent positive prognostic factor for post-operative BCVA (B = −0.020 ± 0.006, p = 0.006) and macular sensitivity (B = 0.200 ± 0.081, p = 0.027).Conclusion: Integrated evaluation of iERM by using OCTA and microperimetry shows an association between microvasculature and macular sensitivity. Pre-operative vessel density of foveal deep capillary plexus assessed by OCTA may be a potentially valuable prognostic factor for iERM surgery.

Abstract Purpose To evaluate retinal sensitivity of macular region between acute and recurrent central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) using microperimetry. Methods A retrospective observational study. Twenty-five eyes of 25 subjects who were diagnosed as either acute or recurrent CSC without any previous treatment were included in this study. All subjects underwent complete ophthalmological examinations including the central retinal thickness (CRT) using spectral domain OCT and the retinal sensitivity assessments of macular region by microperimeter MP-3. The mean global macular sensitivity (GMS) from 64 loci in the 20° central macular area and local macular sensitivity (LMS) from test locations in affected region of SRD were analysed. Results Twelve eyes of 12 subjects with acute CSC (Group A) and 13 eyes of 13 subjects with recurrent CSC (Group R) were enrolled. The clinical parameters, including age, duration, mean LogMAR best-corrected visual acuity and CRT, were not statistically significant (p>0.05) between Group A and Group R. There were significant differences in GMS and LMS between the two groups. Compared with group A (24.9±1.6dB), the mean GMS of group R was significantly (p<0.05) lower (23.0±2.0dB). In addition, the mean LMS of group R (19.9±2.3dB) was also significantly lower (p<0.05) compared with group A (21.8±2.1dB). Conclusion Eyes with recurrent CSC often show worse retinal function in focal affected macular areas than acute disease. Macular microperimetry analysis may deepen our understanding of CSC natural history and influence decision-making in clinical practice.

Background/aimsTo investigate retinal sensitivity and fixation stability using microperimetry in children with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).MethodsObservational case series. Totally 51 preterm children who had been followed for ROP were examined in three groups (n=17 in each group). The groups were defined as children without ROP (group 1), children with spontaneously resolved ROP (group 2) and children who had laser treatment for ROP (group 3). All subjects underwent a detailed ophthalmic examination. Macular Analyzer Integrity Assessment Microperimetry was used to analyse macular light sensitivity and fixation stability. The results were compared between groups. The measurements were also analysed according to age, gender, birth weight and gestational age.ResultsThe mean age was 10.84±0.97 years, and 27 children were female. Mean average threshold (AT) for macular sensitivity was 25.5±2.1 decibel in group 1, 26.8±3.8 decibel in group 2 and 26.3±3.0 decibel in group 3. These differences were not statistically significant between the groups (p=0.067), but AT was abnormal in 29% of the whole study population. Outputs about fixation stability were similar between the three groups but fixation was unstable in 27% of the subjects. Mean AT was better in children ≥11 years old compared with the younger ones (p=0.022).ConclusionPreterm children may have some abnormalities in macular light sensitivity and fixation stability. These abnormalities may be more prominent in children less than 11 years old. ROP itself or the laser treatment seems not to affect macular light sensitivity and fixation stability.

Abstract Background Visual acuity is commonly used as a functional outcome measure in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), despite having a weak correlation with self-perceived visual quality of life. Microperimetry is a useful method of detecting loss of macular function. We wanted to investigate the relationship between these two objective visual outcome measures and subjective vision-related quality of life, finding out which objective measure is more patient-relevant. Methods Fifty-one consecutive patients with AMD were recruited to the study. Participants were required to complete the Visual Function Questionnaire 39, the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study visual acuity examination and a microperimetry assessment using the Micro Perimeter 3. One patient withdrew consent and seven patients dropped out due to cooperation difficulties under microperimetry. Forty-three patients with AMD were included in the study: twenty-eight patients with late AMD (exudative AMD) and fifteen patients with early (non-exudative) AMD. The right eye was included as standard, as was the eye with the best-corrected visual acuity. Results There was a higher correlation between vision-related quality of life and macular sensitivity (r = 0.458; p = 0.014) than between vision-related quality of life and visual acuity (r = 0.446; p = 0.018) in patients with late AMD. There was a positive correlation between vision-related quality of life and macular sensitivity in patients with early AMD (r = 0.542; p = 0.037) while the correlation between vision-related quality of life and visual acuity in these patients was not statistically significant. Composite score (r = 0.469; p = 0.012) correlated highest with the nasal outer macular sub-region and near-distance activities score (r = 0.652; p < 0.001) correlated highest with the nasal inner macular sub-region in patients with late AMD. Correlations between composite score and macular sub-regions in patients with early AMD were not significant, but near-distance activities score correlated with the nasal outer macular sub-region in these patients (r = 0.469; p = 0.012). Conclusions Macular sensitivity as measured using microperimetry correlates with vision-related quality of life in early AMD and in late AMD, showing it to be a patient-relevant outcome measure. Furthermore, the nasal sub-regions of the macula appear to be preferred retinal loci in patients with AMD. (338 words)

Background: We aimed to measure and correlate inner retinal layer (IRL) thickness and macular sensitivity by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and by microperimetry, respectively, in type 1 diabetes mellitus patients (DM1) without diabetic retinopathy (DR). Methods: Fifty-one DM1 patients and 81 age-matched healthy subjects underwent measurement of the axial length (AL), retinal thickness in the macular ETDRS areas by swept source (SS)-OCT and macular sensitivity by microperimeter. Results: The total retinal and IRL thicknesses were thicker in the DM1 group (p < 0.05) in practically all ETDRS areas, and they had a generalized decrease in sensitivity (p < 0.05) in 9 areas between both groups. There was a significant negative correlation between retinal sensitivity and age in all areas and in visual acuity (VA) in 5 out of the 9 areas for DM1 patients. Only a mild negative correlation was observed between retinal sensitivity in the 5° nasal inner (5NI) area and in IRL thickness in the temporal inner (TI) area (−0.309 with p = 0.029) in the DM1 group. Conclusion: Aging and disease evolution in DM1 patients without DR signs generate a decrease in retinal sensitivity. There was a direct relationship between retinal sensitivity and macular thickness in the DM1 group.
