<p>New Zealand’s coastal landscape is a desirable position that holds great significance to our country’s culture. Surf Life Saving Clubs are prominent architectural entities that sit proudly upon New Zealand beaches. Surf Life Saving Clubs have a rich history and are representative of the Kiwi lifestyle. Yet, Surf Life Saving Club buildings, as architecture, have received little serious attention. This thesis investigates characteristic features of Surf Life Saving Clubs in their coastal setting and shows how those qualities can be recognised in future club development.  A review of existing research indicates a gap in scholarship around the understand of Surf Life Saving Club buildings as a facet of coastal development. In this research an extensive range of Surf Life Saving Clubs are surveyed in order to gain a greater understanding of the building type; siting, form, and orientation. This is then followed by detailed case studies of active Surf Life Saving Clubs. The research deduces patterns in site, placement, orientation, form, function layout, structure and materiality that influence the buildings’ character.  Design Guidelines are formulated whilst utilising Critical Regionalism as a lens to reconcile the opposing imperatives that are inherent in creating a building that is both of the vernacular and architecture.  Finally, a Design Case Study allows the Design Guidelines to be developed and tested. Based on these investigations a Design Case Study is produced that models the application of a contemporary Surf Life Saving Club vernacular to a considered work of architecture.</p>

Abstract The green spirit and movement are global issues that voice about environmental conservation efforts. Using media from popular culture as an approach, comics are used as product icons to convey messages regarding an issue. Comic consumers are mostly the younger generation. In comic, characters are designed to represent certain messages. This research used case study method on Swamp Thing comics with a semiotic approach. The data, especially the character design, were anaylized using denotative, connotative, and intertextuality analysis. The result of this research an identification of the use of a scary superhero character as an approach to deliver messages of environmental conservation. The parameters of the effectiveness of character design are seen from the sustainability and development of media that uses the character in their contents.

Raya and the Last Dragon is one of the Walt Disney Animation Studio films released in early 2021. The film tells the adventures of a character named Raya in the land of Kumandra who is looking for dragons to eradicate enemies and save the world. The film shows strong elements of color, background, assets, attributes, life values, habits, and customs which are very close to the daily lives of people in Southeast Asia. Based on these indications, there is an identity politics that reflects the nation in Southeast Asian region. This study aims to examine how identity politics is formed and influences the audience's perception of appreciating Southeast Asian culture. The research method uses a qualitative approach and analyzed using the theory of identity politics. Results of the study conclude that identity politics built through values of life, asset design, and character design for the film Raya and the Last Dragon has succeeded in building perceptions about Southeast Asia, as a cultured and characterized nation with spiritual values to coexist with other nations, living things, and the universe. However, the absence of an Asian voice actor in the film, which was first released in English, caused the audience to lose the element of a sense of belonging. This film became an important mark in American trade politics in the Southeast Asian region, where the film's release occurred at the same time as the many Asian Hate tragedies in American and Europe.

Bauhaus, which started to show itself at the beginning of the 20th century, has an accepted design concept today. The designs formed within the basic philosophy of Bauhaus have a simple and functional structure. The Bauhaus school followed a policy that brought industry and art together. Today, models that are modeled in computer environment with 3D printers or transferred to computer environment with scanners can exist in the real world thanks to these printers. 3D printers respond to needs by providing opportunities in different disciplines. This study deals with three-dimensional character design in line with the Bauhaus Design Principles. The basic philosophy of Bauhaus to create functional designs by utilizing new technologies and the simple characters revealed with 3D printers support this policy. By creating the character design in accordance with the Bauhaus design principles, it is aimed to examine the process until the reproduction of the character in 3D printers. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is present from birth or early childhood. People with autism usually have impaired social interaction, difficulties in verbal and non- verbal communication, and repetitive behaviour. One of the forms of autism treatment is therapy. Vision therapy through toys that require concentration and creativity is able to treat autism as it won’t limit the imagination of children with the disorder. Toys usually have their own patterns and programs that tend to limit children’s creativity, imagination and visual and spatial intelligence. This can lead to children’s stress and lack of confidence. A character design on unit block toys is a form of vision therapy. It develops children’s visual and spatial creativity and intelligence. It also helps children to be independent and helps with their perception. Unit blocks consist of pieces of wooden blocks with different shapes and sizes that can form even bigger shapes, based on children’s imagination and ability to design a space or a building. Children’s visual and spatial intelligence help them visualize and notice shapes, colours, spaces, and designs of the unit blocks accurately, modify their surroundings based upon their perceptions, and recreate the aspects of their visual experiences. Playing Lego blocks will help develop the visual spatial intelligence of children with autism as it stimulates their ability to express ideas and to design a character the way they like.
