Antibiotic resistance is a major public health threat. Patient education on the appropriate use of antibiotics is a key component in combating antimicrobial resistance. The purpose of this study was to analyze the utility of an origami fortune teller as a novel peer educational tool in promoting antimicrobial stewardship on a university campus. An origami fortune teller, with various case scenarios to demonstrate key antibiotic principles, was developed and used by peer educators to educate students attending a university wellness fair. The case studies included: antibiotic indications; differentiation between viral vs. bacterial infection; proper use of antibiotics; non-pharmacologic measures to combat infection; and antibiotic resistance. Students were asked to take an assessment pre and post working with the tool. One hundred and forty-three students received education using the novel tool. A significant improvement in the assessment score was observed after education was completed using the novel tool (69.5 vs. 96.6 p ≤ 0.05).

As wellness centers across the nation continue to expand and entertain its patrons, a potential serious health issue may become more prevalent. When using the integrated entertainment systems within the cardiovascular equipment, intensity levels are able to reach levels that could contribute to noise-induced hearing loss. This research discovered that volume settings that are a part of the integrated entertainment systems of this equipment can reach intensity levels that exceed a safe listening level. In addition, the manufacturer default volume settings were found to be borderline at safe listening levels. This research identified excessive sound intensity levels at specific volume settings on three different types of cardiovascular equipment. Fitness administrators, professionals in hearing science, and wellness center patrons should collaborate to understand the potential impact for hearing loss when listening to this equipment at excessive sound intensity levels.

Researchers have reported that the percentage of Americans considered overweight or obese continues to increase. Specific populations, such as university students, may be at greater risk for becoming overweight or obese. This can be combated by the significant health benefits accrued from regular exercise and physical activity; thus it is important that universities develop and implement methods to incorporate healthy living into its students' lives. The purpose of this paper is to provide a description of a college-student focused wellness initiative known as the Biggest User program. The Biggest User addresses components related to beginning and maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a particular focus on structured exercise, physical activity, and dietary choices. A secondary purpose of the paper is to provide a template for the creation of similar programs at university wellness centers, as such centers are increasingly seeking new and innovative approaches to improving health and wellness of its constituents (Talley, 2013).
