On the Direction of Time: From Reichenbach to Prigogine and Penrose

The question why natural processes tend to flow along a preferred direction has always been considered from within the perspective of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, especially its statistical formulation due to Maxwell and Boltzmann. In this article, we re-examine the subject from the perspective of a new historico-philosophical formulation based on the careful use of selected theoretical elements taken from three key modern thinkers: Hans Reichenbach, Ilya Prigogine, and Roger Penrose, who are seldom considered together in the literature. We emphasize in our analysis how the entropy concept was introduced in response to the desire to extend the applicability of the Second Law to the cosmos at large (Reichenbach and Penrose), and to examine whether intrinsic irreversibility is a fundamental universal characteristics of nature (Prigogine). While the three thinkers operate with vastly different technical proposals and belong to quite distinct intellectual backgrounds, some similarities are detected in their thinking. We philosophically examine these similarities but also bring into focus the uniqueness of each approach. Our purpose is not providing an exhaustive derivations of logical concepts identified in one thinker in terms of ideas found in the others. Instead, the main objective of this work is to stimulate historico-philosophical investigations and inquiries into the problem of the direction of time in nature by way of crossdisciplinary examinations of previous theories commonly treated in literature as disparate domains.

Points of convergence between logical empiricism and inductive metaphysics: Hans Reichenbach and Erich Becher in comparison

In this paper, I take a closer look at Hans Reichenbach’s relation to metaphysics and work out some interesting parallels between his account and that of the proponents of inductive metaphysics, a tradition that emerged in the mid- and late 19th century and the early 20th century in Germany. It is in particular Hans Reichenbach’s conception of the relation between the natural sciences and metaphysics, as displayed in his treatment of the question of the existence of the external world, that shows some very interesting similarities with inductive metaphysics. By a comparison with the position of the inductive metaphysician Erich Becher and his handling of the problem of realism, I work out the parallels between Reichenbach’s program and inductive metaphysics. I come to the conclusion that while there are certainly some respects in which Reichenbach’s logical empiricism is closer to the positions of the representatives of the Vienna Circle, it turns out that with regard to his views on metaphysics there is a greater affinity with the program of inductive metaphysics.

Screening off generalized: Reichenbach’s legacy

Eells and Sober proved in 1983 that screening off is a sufficient condition for the transitivity of probabilistic causality, and in 2003 Shogenji noted that the same goes for probabilistic support. We start this paper by conjecturing that Hans Reichenbach may have been aware of this fact. Then we consider the work of Suppes and Roche, who demonstrated in 1986 and 2012 respectively that screening off can be generalized, while still being sufficient for transitivity. We point out an interesting difference between Reichenbach’s screening off and the generalized version, which we illustrate with an example about haemophilia among the descendants of Queen Victoria. Finally, we embark on a further generalization: we develop a still weaker condition, one that can be made as weak as one wishes.

Die Entwicklung von Carnaps Aufbau 1920–1928

ZusammenfassungDer logische Aufbau der Welt wurde 1928 publiziert, zwei Jahre nachdem Carnap sich in Wien mit dem Manuskript des (danach in gekürzter und bearbeiteter Form publizierten) Buches habilitiert hatte. Entstanden ist Carnaps Buch jedoch in einer Zeit, in der dieser noch nicht in Wien tätig war. Die Niederschrift erfolgte im Jahr 1925 in Buchenbach bei Freiburg; die Vorgeschichte reicht zurück bis ins Jahr 1920. Wie viel Wien oder Wiener Kreis steckt also eigentlich im Aufbau? Wie sehr spiegelt der Aufbau umgekehrt die philosophische Situation in Carnaps frühem Umfeld in Jena und Freiburg wieder? Ist der Aufbau ein Stück österreichische oder ein Stück deutsche Philosophie oder beides? Um diese Fragen auf einer soliden empirischen Grundlage beantworten zu können, wird hier das vorhandene Material ausgewertet, das die Entstehung von Carnaps Buch dokumentiert. Dabei handelt es sich, neben (a) den publizierten Texten Carnaps aus dieser Zeit, um folgende Quellen: (b) Carnaps Tagebücher und Leselisten, (c) verschiedene Briefwechsel, (d) Manuskripte und Fragmente aus den Nachlässen von Carnap, Hans Reichenbach, Moritz Schlick, Franz Roh und anderen.

Texte zur Quantentheorie

Die in diesem Band zusammengestellten Texte Schlicks aus den Zwanziger- und Dreißigerjahren vermitteln vor dem Hintergrund der Einstein’schen Relativitätsrevolution das Bild einer Zeit des radikalen Umbruchs und der Entstehung des Neuen in der Physik. Als Protagonist einer Epoche intensiver Wechselwirkung zwischen naturwissenschaftlicher Forschung und philosophischer Reflexion stand Schlick, der bei Max Planck promoviert wurde, in einem intensiven Gedankenaustausch mit der Gemeinschaft der Quantenphysiker, wozu u. a. Max Born, Werner Heisenberg, Erwin Schrödinger, Pascual Jordan und Wolfgang Pauli zählten. Während sie der noch jungen Theorie der Quanten zum Durchbruch verhalfen, lieferte Schlick vor allem in Auseinandersetzung mit Hans Reichenbach und unter dem Einfluss der sprachphilosophischen Wende Ludwig Wittgensteins stehend zentrale Beiträge zum neuen Verständnis der physikalischen Realität, zu den Begriffen von Kausalität und Wahrscheinlichkeit, aber auch zum Problem der Messung und zum Verhältnis zwischen Physik und Biologie.
