Ichthyofauna checklist was scrutinized in tributaries of Muda Reservoir. A total of 5998 specimens were caught using a cast net of 2.5 cm mesh size. Amongst these specimen, 30 fish species from 12 families were recorded. The most dominant fish family in this lotic ecosystem was Cyprinidae. Rasbora dusonensis, Cyclocheilichthys apogon and Mystacoleucus marginatus recorded the uppermost distribution compared to other fish species found in this tributaries. Six fish species were the newly recorded species found in tributaries of Muda Reservoir; Barbonymus gonionotus, Luciosoma setigerum, Toxabramis houdemeri, Mystus singaringan, Anabas testudineus and Trichopodus pectoralis. In accordance with the previous combination of recorded fish species in tributaries of Muda Reservoir, a total of 57 updated total numbers of fish species were recorded. The information obtained in present study will update the latest ichthyofauna checklist in tributaries of Muda Reservoir, as well as for the future comparison in other geographical locations.

Rivers are among the most biodiverse and endangered ecosystems on earth. In Europe, concern over their conservation promoted the development of legal instruments for habitat and species conservation, the Habitats Directive, and water resource management, the Water Framework Directive. This legal protection demanded the estimate of river ecosystem surface for different purposes. Different approaches allow river surface to be measured at a low cost. Some accurate techniques like satellite images or LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) do not always work at a large scale or for streams and small rivers. We discuss here the use of the traditional hydraulics relationship between drainage area and bankfull width as a good approach to river surface estimation. We confirm that the use of this cheap and simple method could be a good approach to estimate river surface. However, we also proved that the development of regional curves, i.e., to establish the empirical relationship based on study area data, constitutes an essential improvement to estimation.

Characterization of community size structure presents an alternative to taxa-based approaches commonly applied to assess lotic ecosystem health. However, few studies have explored the relationship between community size structure and land use stresses in lotic systems. In the present study, we investigated use of metrics including mean body size, body size range, size diversity, size evenness, and the size spectrum slope as indicators of land use disturbance in streams. We also explored the effects of sampling intensity (one- versus three-pass electrofishing) on these size-based variables. We found significant decreases in size range and diversity with increased urban cover. In contrast, mean body size, size evenness, and size spectrum slopes were unrelated to variation in land use. Fewer than 25% of samples collected conformed to the power law model predicted for size distributions in aquatic ecosystems. However, increased departure from the power law form was related to agricultural cover and the use of three-pass electrofishing.

Water Quality Index (WQI) as a tool to assess the water quality status provides advice related to the use of water quality monitoring data and it is a way for combining the complex water quality data into a single value or single statement. The present study was conducted on Al- Hilla river in the middle of Iraq from August 2012 to July 2013 at five selected stations in the river, from Al- Musaib city to Al- Hashimya at the south of Hilla to determine its suitability for aquatic environment (GWQI), drinking water (PWSI) and irrigation (IWQI).This index offers a useful representation of the overall quality of water for public or any intended use as well as indicating pollution, water quality management, and decision making. According to the obtained results, it can be concluded that the EC, TSS, Total hardness, Ca, Mg, DO, BOD5, and NO3 moved away from the desired standards when the temperature rises. The variable of value of this index may be due to increasing the ration of organic matters and converting the carbonate to bicarbonate. The results recorded high value of calcium and magnesium more than the standard value of WHO and IQS (50 mg/l and high value of total hardness more than 500 mg/l). Irrigation water quality index (IWQI) in the study sites were ranged between 66-83 ranged between fair and good.

At present, particular attention is paid to large rivers without realizing that the ecological status of a large lotic ecosystem depends on the state of its tributaries. Thus, in the conditions of growing anthropogenic presetting, we aimed to demonstrate the importance of the ecotone zones formed between two riparian ecosystems of different sizes, in order to ensure the welfare of the fish resources on both sides.
