The thermal characteristics of polymathic methacrylate combined with unsaturated polyester were determined by numerical and experimental research. Models for numerically investigating the parameters of thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, and thermal diffusivity were developed using COMSOL Multiphysics. The numerical data were then compared to experimental results for the same material using the same measurements to ensure that they were correct. By comparing the thermal conductivity data to two sets of theoretical data, the results were confirmed. The COMSOL models were quite close to the experimental data, with just minor differences between the three models. One set of theoretical data coincided with the mean of the other data, while the second set revealed a significant departure below the other data.

1. About ICMEAM2021 Yaseen Academy organized the 2021 International Conference on Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics (ICMEAM 2021), which was planned to be held during 12-14 November, 2021 at Sanya, Hainan Province, China. Due to the restrictions caused by Covid-19, the participants joined the conference online via Tencent Meeting at 13 November, 2021. The Conference looks for significant contributions to all major fields of Mechanical Engineering, Structural Mechanics and Mechanics of Materials in theoretical and practical aspects. The aim of the conference is to provide a platform to the researchers and practitioners from both academia as well as industry to meet and share cutting-edge development in the field.

Abstract This special issue of the Journal of the Engineering Materials and Technology is dedicated to the memory of our friend and colleague Professor Hussein Zbib who passed away in February 2020. Hussein was a past editor of this journal and was an internationally recognized research leader and innovator in numerous aspects of mechanics of materials, such as dislocation dynamics, plasticity, and irradiated materials. The papers in this special issue, through the different contributions of his collaborators, colleagues, students, and friends, truly reflect the different research areas he impacted. Furthermore, these contributions underscore how his research interests, collaborations, and achievements fundamentally influenced the experimental and modeling accomplishment.

AbstractA time-honored approach in theoretical materials science revolves around the search for basic mechanisms that should incorporate key feature of the phenomenon under investigation. Recent years have witnessed an explosion across areas of science of a data-driven approach fueled by recent advances in machine learning. Here we provide a brief perspective on the strengths and weaknesses of mechanism based and data-driven approaches in the context of the mechanics of materials. We discuss recent literature on dislocation dynamics, atomistic plasticity in glasses focusing on the empirical discovery of governing equations through artificial intelligence. We conclude highlighting the main open issues and suggesting possible improvements and future trajectories in the fields.
