Although meta-generalized-gradient approximations (meta-GGAs) are believed potentially the most accurate among the efficient first-principles calculations, the performance has not been accessed on the nonlinear mechanical properties of two-dimensional nanomaterials. Graphene, like two-dimensional silicon carbide g-SiC, has a wide direct band-gap with applications in high-power electronics and solar energy. Taken g-SiC as a paradigm, we have investigated the performance of meta-GGA functionals on the nonlinear mechanical properties under large strains, both compressive and tensile, along three deformation modes using Strongly Constrained and Appropriately Normed Semilocal Density Functional (SCAN) as an example. A close comparison suggests that the nonlinear mechanics predicted from SCAN are very similar to that of Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) formulated functional, a standard Density Functional Theory (DFT) functional. The improvement from SCAN calculation over PBE calculation is minor, despite the considerable increase of computing demand. This study could be helpful in selection of density functionals in simulations and modeling of mechanics of materials.

In robotic-assisted heart surgery, the method of canceling the relative motion between the surgical site on the heart and the surgical instruments was introduced in this paper. A whisker sensor was designed for three dimensional position measurement in beating heart surgery. Analytical models were developed according to the classical mechanics of materials, and theoretical formulas were derived for displacement measurement. Feasibility and effectiveness of the method were verified by simulation experiments. We can obtain measurements by loading displacement to the whisker sensor, and draw conclusions by comparing the measurements.

The construction of a lunar base has been thought about for almost five decades. The earliest concepts dealt with size and shape concepts rather than actual design of structures and equipment. As the exploration of space has received emphasis in more recent times, the need to consider the factors of design and design approaches have received more attention. It still is not possible to completely rationalize the design of a habitat, for example, but we are now very aware of the need to include the fracture and fatigue properties of the materials of which the hardware of a lunar infrastructure is constructed. It is reasonably certain that the same techniques used for terrestrial designs can be used for lunar bases provided the space environment is taken into account. The extensive amount of research on fracture and fatigue that has been and is being conducted, along with the ease and speed of computation of their effects on alternative design features will be invaluable in providing a highly reliable, safe lunar base.
