Solve problems in elementary structural mechanics thoughtfully and efficiently with this self-contained volume. Covers the basics of structural mechanics and focuses on simple structures, truss frameworks, beams and frames, design choices, and deformity. Carefully interrogates underlying assumptions for efficiencies in working out whilst expounding fundamental principles for a consistent understanding. Heavily connects the practical world of indeterminate structures to their analysis, to underline benefits they impart to the latter: that certain analytical methods provide a wealth of efficient solutions for problems of indeterminate structures compared to determinate ones. Celebrates the beauty of analytical indeterminacy and its relationship to practical structures. Perfect for students invested in structural mechanics, and aims to complement their learning and understanding.

The interdependence between structural mechanics and microstructure solidification has been widely observed experimentally as a factor leading to undesirable macroscopic properties and casting defects. Despite this, numerical modelling of microstructure solidification often neglects this interaction and is therefore unable to predict key mechanisms such as the development of misoriented grains. This paper presents a numerical method coupling a finite volume structural mechanics solver to a cellular automata solidification solver, where gravity or pressure-driven displacements alter the local orientation and thereby growth behaviour of the solidifying dendrites. Solutions obtained using this model are presented which show fundamental behaviours observed in experiments. The results show that small, localized deformations can lead to significant changes in the crystallographic orientation of a dendrite and ultimately affect the overall microstructure development. This article is part of the theme issue 'Transport phenomena in complex systems (part 2)'.

The article discusses ways to improve the accuracy of solving problems of nonlinear structural mechanics. It is shown that the combination of the method of sequential loading and the Newton-Kantorovich method can improve the accuracy of the solution and reduce the complexity of obtaining results. The solution of the given linear equations can be obtained by numerical and approximate methods known in the literature.

Sloshing impact loads can cause severe structural damage to cargo tanks in liquefied natural gas floating production storage offloading units (LNG-FPSOs or FLNGs). Studies of sloshing can be classified into two types, namely, hydrodynamics-related and structural mechanics-related studies. This study is a sequel to the authors’ previous studies (Paik et al. 2015; Lee et al. 2015), but is more related to issues of structural mechanics. In this study, a new method for probabilistic sloshing assessment, which has been previously developed by the authors, is briefly explained. The nonlinear impact structural response characteristics under sloshing impact loads are examined by a nonlinear finite element ANSYS/LS-DYNA method. An iso-damage curve, representing a pressure-impulse diagram, is derived for the self-supporting prismatic-shape IMO B type LNG cargo containment system of a hypothetical FLNG. The insights developed from this work can be useful for the damage-tolerant design of cargo tanks in FLNGs.

Sub-modeling techniques implemented in commercial finite element codes were reviewed. New sub-modeling applications in structural mechanics stress analysis are presented. Sub-modeling methods based on displacement and force cut boundary application are compared. Advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed. The case of nested sub-models is demonstrated.

The article is dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the founding of Russian University of Transport (MIIT), the largest transport university in the country. Over the years of its existence, the University has gone from an engineering school to a national-wide transport university, a leading center for science and education. The history of the University is examined through the prism of formation and development of schools of sciences. The University established world-known schools of sciences of structural mechanics and bridge construction, hydraulic theory of friction, bridge construction and welding, structural mechanics, design and operation of railways, design and thermal calculations of steam locomotives, etc.Over the years, the University has trained many tens of thousands of highly qualified specialists for the transport industry of the country. Loyalty to traditions, the ability to respond to demands of the time and work for the future allow Russian University of Transport to remain in the ranks of the leading universities in Russia.

1. About ICMEAM2021 Yaseen Academy organized the 2021 International Conference on Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics (ICMEAM 2021), which was planned to be held during 12-14 November, 2021 at Sanya, Hainan Province, China. Due to the restrictions caused by Covid-19, the participants joined the conference online via Tencent Meeting at 13 November, 2021. The Conference looks for significant contributions to all major fields of Mechanical Engineering, Structural Mechanics and Mechanics of Materials in theoretical and practical aspects. The aim of the conference is to provide a platform to the researchers and practitioners from both academia as well as industry to meet and share cutting-edge development in the field.
