Sociality in animal populations is a continuum, and interactions between conspecifics are meaningful for all vertebrates. Ignorance of social structures can lead to misunderstanding their ecology and, consequently, to unsuccessful species management. Here, we combined genetic and spatial data on radio-collared brown bears (Ursus arctos) to investigate kin-related home range overlap and kin-related centroid distance within central and eastern Finland. We found that the extent of home range overlap was positively correlated with relatedness among adult females. In addition, home range centroid distance decreased as relatedness increased. Moreover, there were significant differences between the two studied regions: female brown bears in central Finland were more closely related to each other, and the sizes of their home ranges were larger than those in eastern Finland. The smaller home ranges and lower degree of relatedness among bears in eastern Finland might be a result of the substantially higher hunting pressure in the area, combined with immigration of new unrelated individuals from Russia.

Abstract Understanding hibernation in brown bears (Ursus arctos) can provide insight into some human diseases. During hibernation, brown bears experience periods of insulin resistance, physical inactivity, extreme bradycardia, obesity, and the absence of urine production. These states closely mimic aspects of human diseases such as type 2 diabetes, muscle atrophy, as well as renal and heart failure. The reversibility of these states from hibernation to active season enables the identification of mediators with possible therapeutic value for humans. Recent studies have identified genes and pathways that are differentially expressed between active and hibernation seasons. However, little is known about the role of differential expression of gene isoforms on hibernation physiology. To identify both distinct and novel mRNA isoforms, full-length RNA-sequencing (Iso-Seq) was performed on adipose, skeletal muscle, and liver from three individuals sampled during both active and hibernation seasons. The existing reference annotation was improved by combining it with the Iso-Seq data. Short-read RNA-sequencing data from six individuals was mapped to the new reference annotation to quantify differential isoform usage between tissues and seasons. We identified differentially expressed isoforms in all three tissues, to varying degrees. Adipose had a high level of differential isoform usage with isoform switching, regardless of whether the genes were differentially expressed. Our analyses revealed that differential isoform usage, even in the absence of differential gene expression, is an important mechanism for modulating genes during hibernation. These findings demonstrate the value of isoform expression studies and will serve as the basis for deeper exploration into hibernation biology.

La Cordillera de los Cárpatos en Rumania constituye un área prioritaria para la conservación del oso pardo (Ursus arctos L.) en el territorio europeo, ya que presenta grandes extensiones de hábitat para la especie con un alto grado de continuidad. No obstante, sin acciones responsables por parte de los gobernantes, los futuros proyectos de desarrollo localizados en este territorio representan una amenaza para la conectividad y la disponibilidad de hábitat de la especie. Se presenta, por tanto, la necesidad de identificar las zonas preferentes de paso para la especie con el fin de definir y proteger una red ecológica resiliente que garantice la conectividad entre las poblaciones que habitan en el territorio. Concretamente, este estudio compara diferentes enfoques de modelización con el fin de identificar los corredores y áreas prioritarias para la conectividad del oso pardo a lo largo de la región sudeste de los Cárpatos. Para ello, primero se elaboraron diferentes mapas de resistencia en base a modelos de disponibilidad de hábitat (MaxEnt) y conocimiento experto. Posteriormente, se estimaron las distancias de mínimo coste (Linkage Mapper) y se aplicó teoría de circuitos (Circuitscape), para definir los principales corredores utilizados por la especie. Finalmente, se evaluó la importancia contribución de cada uno de los elementos identificados que conforman la red ecológica (Conefor 2.6). Este estudio proporciona nuevas conclusiones relacionadas con la aplicación de diferentes enfoques conceptuales de modelización de la conectividad, así como indica las áreas prioritarias a integrar en los futuros planes territoriales y en la gestión de la especie.

In September 2019, two gravid female brown bears (Ursus arctos) were captured and equipped with GPS/GSM collars in Paklenica National Park (Croatia). Home ranges during hyperphagia were analyzed to describe the spatiotemporal requirements. Mean seasonal home ranges were very small with 9.2 km2 and 7.5 km2 (Brownian Bridge Movement Model 95%). During the tracking period, both bears used different territories and showed little to no use of overlapping area. The bears in our study spent a considerable time in proximity of artificial feeding sites, indicating a probable use of these structures as a food resource (mean 15.7% and 30.7%). Furthermore, the bears approached very close to human structures such as 8.9 m and 4.4 m. As most encounters between humans and bears occur during hyperphagia, it is important to offer refugia from human disturbance, especially as the National Park is not only used by residents, but also by tourists. To adapt management according to the animal’s needs, further studies should include more individuals from different age and sex classes. Both females were gravid. It remains unclear whether gravidity has an effect on the home range and should be further investigated.

In northern Eurasia, large carnivores overlap with semi-domestic reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) and moose (Alces alces). In Scandinavia, previous studies have quantified brown bear (Ursus arctos) spring predation on neonates of reindeer (mostly in May) and moose (mostly in June). We explored if habitat selection by brown bears changed following resource pulses and whether these changes are more pronounced on those individuals characterised by higher predatory behaviour. Fifteen brown bears in northern Sweden (2010–2012) were fitted with GPS proximity collars, and 2585 female reindeers were collared with UHF transmitters. Clusters of bear positions were visited to investigate moose and reindeer predation. Bear kill rates and home ranges were calculated to examine bear movements and predatory behaviour. Bear habitat selection was modelled using resource selection functions over four periods (pre-calving, reindeer calving, moose calving, and post-calving). Coefficients of selection for areas closer to different land cover classes across periods were compared, examining the interactions between different degrees of predatory behaviour (i.e., high and low). Bear habitat selection differed throughout the periods and between low and high predatory bears. Differences among individuals’ predatory behaviour are reflected in the selection of habitat types, providing empirical evidence that different levels of specialization in foraging behaviour helps to explain individual variation in bear habitat selection.

The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) has become a symbol of the threat to biodiversity from climate change. Understanding polar bear evolutionary history may provide insights into apex carnivore responses and prospects during periods of extreme environmental perturbations. In recent years, genomic studies have examined bear speciation and population history, including evidence for ancient admixture between polar bears and brown bears (Ursus arctos). Here, we extend our earlier studies of a 130,000-115,000-year-old polar bear from the Svalbard Archipelago using 10X coverage genome sequence and ten new genomes of polar and brown bears from contemporary zones of overlap in northern Alaska. We demonstrate a dramatic decline in effective population size for this ancient polar bear's lineage, followed by a modest increase just before its demise. A slightly higher genetic diversity in the ancient polar bear suggests a severe genetic erosion over a prolonged bottleneck in modern polar bears. Statistical fitting of data to alternative admixture graph scenarios favors at least one ancient introgression event from brown bears into the ancestor of polar bears, possibly dating back over 150,000 years. Gene flow was likely bidirectional, but allelic transfer from brown into polar bear is the strongest detected signal, which contrasts with other published works. These findings have implications for our understanding of climate change impacts: polar bears, a specialist Arctic lineage, may not only have undergone severe genetic bottlenecks, but also been the recipient of generalist, boreal genetic variants from brown bear during critical phases of Northern Hemisphere glacial oscillations.

Animal movement modelling provides unique insight about how animals perceive their landscape and how this perception may influence space use. When coupled with data describing an animal's environment, ecologists can fit statistical models to location data to describe how spatial memory informs movement. We performed such an analysis on a population of brown bears (Ursus arctos) in the Canadian Arctic using a model incorporating time-dependent spatial memory patterns. Brown bear populations in the Arctic lie on the periphery of the species' range, and as a result endure harsh environmental conditions. In this kind of environment, effective use of memory to inform movement strategies could spell the difference between survival and mortality. The model we fit tests four alternate hypotheses (some incorporating memory; some not) against each other, and we found a high degree of individual variation in how brown bears used memory. We found that 52% (11 of 21) of the bears used complex, time-dependent spatial memory to inform their movement decisions. These results, coupled with existing knowledge on individual variation in the population, highlight the diversity of foraging strategies for Arctic brown bears while also displaying the inference that can be drawn from this innovative movement model.
