There is always a need to create efficient and optimized converters to deliver the best possible results to achieve a better THD profile in the waveform output. One way is by controlling the switching of the power switches of the converters using appropriate modulation schemes. While numerous works have been done in proposing new switching modulation strategies for multilevel inverters, this work will compare multicarrier PWM and near-to-level control (NLC) modulation schemes. In this paper, multicarrier PWM variants, namely, PD-PWM, POD-PWM, and APOD-PWM, are designed and simulated. Their voltage THD and spectrum performance are discussed when applied to single-phase 7, 9, and 11-level cascaded multilevel inverters. Then NLC modulation will be designed and applied to similar multilevel inverter circuits. It will be shown that the NLC exhibits some superior performances compared to PWM-based but with several drawbacks that can be optimized.

In this work, a new modular multilevel inverter topology is introduced for a single phase grid connected Photovoltaic system. This multilevel inverter use less number of switches to generate seven levels compared to other conventional multilevel inverters. This requires only one isolated dc source to operate. So it is suitable for renewable energy application. This inverter is designed by submodule configuration; each sub module contains two switches and one DC link capacitor. The sub modules will be added to the inverter depending on number of levels. The voltage balancing of DC link capacitor is carried out by Y matrix PWM technique. Because of Y matrix PWM technique, the inverter gets a self capacitor voltage balancing ability. So there is no need of external devices required for balancing the voltage of capacitor. A PLL for grid integration and LCL filter are designed and integrated with this inverter. The simulation of proposed system is carried out by MATLAB/SIMULINK and performance of THD is monitored as per standards

A multilevel inverter is implemented for generating the required staircase AC voltage of output from various steps of voltages of DC sources. The multilevel inverter gives a better harmonic spectrum and a compatible quality of output. This article delves into an analytical analysis of the total harmonic distortion (THD) of different multilevel inverters which employ a multicarrier PWM technique. This technique is implemented for operating the switches at their respective angle of conduction. This paper deals with various cascaded H-Bridge multilevel inverters (CMI) with various loads that are modelled by implementing the MATLAB/Simulink platform. The output gives a better result of the proposed model in terms that it is helpful towards reducing the THD and the losses of switching.
