The volumetric distribution of bone tissue can be analysed in terms of orthotropic medium. In this case, it is important to define the orthotropic directions. Nowadays, computed tomography methods allow getting such information. The method for automation such analysis is presented. Firstly, the threshold of binarization should be calculated. Then the sample should be meshed and each element should be binarized. After that fabric tensor, eigenvalues, eigenvectors and fractional anisotropy can be calculated for each element. Statistical methods were used to analyse the field of the obtained data. Described methods were used on a bone sample. It was shown that for a sample the fabric tensor is constant and the fractional anisotropy is close to zero. That’s means that the medium in the sample was isotropic.

A large prehistoric pit was uncovered during a watching brief on a water main installation. The pit was partially stone-lined and two small scoops were identified at the base. These contained one complete and one partial Beaker vessel. The fills of the pit produced a small quantity of cremated human bone which represented a minimum of four individuals (three adults and a juvenile). Also mixed into the fills were sherds of other Beaker vessels, a few lithics, a stone axehead, and fragments of Neolithic pottery. Radiocarbon determinations produced early Neolithic dates for four samples of human bone and a grain of wheat, and one human bone sample produced a Bronze Age date later than the generally accepted currency of Beaker pottery production in Scotland. Interpretation of this strange collection of material is discussed with reference to Neolithic and Bronze Age burial practices; the evidence for the use of this pit in the Neolithic for cremation burial is a rare find and provides a valuable contribution to our understanding of this period and type of monument.

The article presents stone and pottery materials from Tanowo, site 3, near Szczecin, excavated in the years 1999-2002 (trench II). The materials represent the late phase o f proto-Neolithic occupation dated back to 3300-2900/2800 BC. An animal bone sample from settlement pit in trench II is dated back to 5170 +/- BP (Poz - 1385).

This article presents the construction of a flexible drill which is designed to cut a curved canal in the bone or remove bone materials, to improve the outcome of orthopedic surgery and to facilitate minimally invasive. This article reports the design of the flexible drill and uses it in an experimental rig to evaluate the drilling force generated when cutting bovine bone. The experiments facilitate the measurement of action forces between the mill bits when moving the tip toward or across a bone sample in various configurations caused by bending the flexible drill sheath to enable cutting of a curved path of variable radius in the bone. The reaction force represents the force trying to deflect the mill bit tip away from the bone sample surface and must be resisted in order to continue cutting without deflection or buckling of the tip during the drilling of curved pathways. The experiment shows the flexible drill can cut bones in both configurations and experienced a maximal force of 3.4N in the vertical configuration and 0.54N in lateral configuration. The experimental results show that the flexible drill designed is able to produce sufficient force at variable bending angles to perform the required tasks for bone cutting.
