In 1981, Kelly showed that planar posets can have arbitrarily large dimension. However, the posets in Kelly's example have bounded Boolean dimension and bounded local dimension, leading naturally to the questions as to whether either Boolean dimension or local dimension is bounded for the class of planar posets. The question for Boolean dimension was first posed by Nešetřil and Pudlák in 1989 and remains unanswered today. The concept of local dimension is quite new, introduced in 2016 by Ueckerdt. Since that time, researchers have obtained many interesting results concerning Boolean dimension and local dimension, contrasting these parameters with the classic Dushnik-Miller concept of dimension, and establishing links between both parameters and structural graph theory, path-width and tree-width in particular. Here we show that local dimension is not bounded on the class of planar posets. Our proof also shows that the local dimension of a poset is not bounded in terms of the maximum local dimension of its blocks, and it provides an alternative proof of the fact that the local dimension of a poset cannot be bounded in terms of the tree-width of its cover graph, independent of its height.

Abstract We investigate the problem of computing the number of linear extensions of a given n-element poset whose cover graph has treewidth t. We present an algorithm that runs in time $${\tilde{O}}(n^{t+3})$$ O ~ ( n t + 3 ) for any constant t; the notation $${\tilde{O}}$$ O ~ hides polylogarithmic factors. Our algorithm applies dynamic programming along a tree decomposition of the cover graph; the join nodes of the tree decomposition are handled by fast multiplication of multivariate polynomials. We also investigate the algorithm from a practical point of view. We observe that the running time is not well characterized by the parameters n and t alone: fixing these parameters leaves large variance in running times due to uncontrolled features of the selected optimal-width tree decomposition. We compare two approaches to select an efficient tree decomposition: one is to include additional features of the tree decomposition to build a more accurate, heuristic cost function; the other approach is to fit a statistical regression model to collected running time data. Both approaches are shown to yield a tree decomposition that typically is significantly more efficient than a random optimal-width tree decomposition.

Object based image processing and analysis is challenging research in very high resolution satellite utilisation. Commonly ei ther pixel based classification or visual interpretation is used to recognize and delineate land cover categories. The pixel based classification techniques use rich spectral content of satellite images and fail to utilise spatial relations. To overcome th is drawback, traditional time consuming visual interpretation methods are being used operational ly for preparation of thematic maps. This paper addresses computational vision principles to object level image segmentation. In this study, computer vision algorithms are developed to define the boundary between two object regions and segmentation by representing image as graph. Image is represented as a graph G (V, E), where nodes belong to pixels and, edges (E) connect nodes belonging to neighbouring pixels. The transformed Mahalanobis distance has been used to define a weight function for partition of graph into components such that each component represents the region of land category. This implies that edges between two vertices in the same component have relatively low weights and edges between vertices in different components should have higher weights. The derived segments are categorised to different land cover using supervised classification. <br><br> The paper presents the experimental results on real world multi-spectral remote sensing images of different landscapes such as Urban, agriculture and mixed land cover. Graph construction done in C program and list the run time for both graph construction and segmentation calculation on dual core Intel i7 system with 16 GB RAM, running 64bit window 7.

It is shown in this note that with high probability it is enough to destroy all triangles in order to get a cover graph from a random graph $G_{n,p}$ with $p\le \kappa \log n/n$ for any constant $\kappa < 2/3$. On the other hand, this is not true for somewhat higher densities: If $p\ge \lambda (\log n)^3 / (n\log\log n)$ with $\lambda > 1/8$ then with high probability we need to delete more edges than one from every triangle. Our result has a natural algorithmic interpretation.
