Periphyton group are biota communities that be able adapt and grow well in lentic waters. Their habits are adhere to a permanent location. Aquatic vegetation in Bangkau can influenced the periphyton abundance and diversity as natural food in the food chain. The purpose of this study was to analyzed abundance and diversity of Periphyton from different aquatic vegetation. The research was conducted in three stations by purposive sampling. The method used was quantitative explored. The data that has been taken were epiphythic periphyton samples. Periphyton sampling procedures, preservation, and analysis were carried out based on Indonesian National Standard methods. Bangkau’s peatland had the highest abundance of phytoplankton-periphyton (9982 sel/liter) in inlet, but low at middle station (778 sel/liter). Zooplankton-periphyton (553 sel/liter) in middle station was the highest abundance whereas in outlet station (153 sel/liter) was the lowest. Bacillariophyceae had predominant and always attendanced Oscillatoria, Closterium, Planktonella, Diatom, meanwhile zooplankton-periphyton dominated Ciliophora in all stations and sampling. Diversity index of phytoplankton-periphyton in inlet station (1,55) was the highest and in inlet (0,77) was the lowest. Zooplankton-periphyton in middle (1,76) and outlet (0,94) was different based on Shannon wiener’s Index. The abundance index of Bangkau were mesotrophic categorized for phytoplankton-periphyton and oligotrophic for zooplankton-periphyton. Due to the low level of species diversity (H’≤ 3) showed moderate stability and for the water quality conditions was moderate polluted.

Abstract Odonata larvae have been intensively used as bioindicators for freshwater pollution as their community structure closely follow changes in the environment and habitat settings. In this study, 28 taxa of Odonata larvae were collected from three stations (upper, middle and lower) of a polluted river in Malaysia. The upper river basin receives effluents from an oil palm plantation. However, the middle station is presumably contaminated with anthropogenic wastes. The lower station is found to receive polluted discharges from aquaculture outlet. Several environmental parameters of water and sediment were continuously measured during the study. The water parameters showed no significant differences amongst the three stations. The species richness of Odonata was 22, 24 and 20 in the upper, middle and lower stations, respectively. The abundance of Odonata was significantly different among the studied sites. The tolerant damselfly, Pseudagrion sp. (41.22%), and facultative dragonflies, Onychothemis sp. (17.12%), were the most dominant taxa along the river stations. Onychothemis sp. and Paragomphus capricornis were equally important at the upper station [Important Species Index (ISI) 25.3 and 24.2%, respectively]. Pseudagrion sp. only scored an ISI value of 9.7%. Pseudagrion sp., P. capricornis and Onychothemis sp. were dominant in the middle station (ISI: 41.2%, 25.9% and 10.9% respectively), and Pseudagrion sp., Onychothemis sp. and Prodasineura sp. dominated the areas with dense growth of submerged aquatic weeds Hydrilla sp. in the lower station (ISI: 47.9, 24.5 and 13.8%, respectively). On the basis of the variations in larval abundance and ISI values, microhabitats differences partly in response to different types of pollutions entering the water structured the Odonata communities in this river basin.

Kata kunci: Sungai Ranoyapo, kualitas air, pencemaran air, keanekaragaman makrozoobentos MACROZOOBENTHOS AS BIOINDICATOR IN DETERMINING WATER QUALITY OF RANOYAPO RIVER, SOUTH MINAHASA, NORTH SULAWESI ABSTRACT Ranoyapo River is the longest river in the Minahasa Region with its length of  60.5 Km. Ranoyapo River is the main river watershed Ranoyapo which its area of 87.154 ha. Ranoyapo River crosses agricultural, plantation, resident, and industry areas. Waste originated from those areas will affect water quality of Ranoyapo River. Macrozoobenthos can be used as a biological parameter in determining the condition of the river because they relatively slow move on the riverbed. This study aims to determine the water quality of the River Ranoyapo based on biodiversity index of macrozoobenthos. The study was conducted during the rainy season i.e. from January to March 2013. Three locations were chosen from upstream, midstream and downstream river with 3 replications in each location. The quality of Ranoyapo River was determined by the biodiversity index Shannon Wiener (H') of macrozoobenthos using classification of Staub et al (1970. Macrozoobenthos of Ranoyapo River consisted of 3 Phyla, 5 Classes, 13 Orders, 21 Families, and 23 Genus. Biodiversity index (H’) of macrozoobenthos from up (Station I), middle (Station II) and downstream (Station III) respectively were 2.43; 2.06, and 1.77. The quality of Ranoyapo River at up and middle were lightly polluted with index H’: 2.0 to 3.0 (H '> 2.0) and at down was moderately polluted with index H ': 1.0 to 2.0 (H' <2). Keywords: Ranoyapo River, water quality, water pollution, macrozoobenthos biodiversity

In this paper, we describe the pelagic and benthic ecosystem of the Golden Horn  estuary opening into the Marmara Sea. To improve the water quality of the estuary, which had long been subject to severe anthropogenic pollution (industrial, chemical, shipping),  industrial facilities were moved from the estuary in the 1980s, followed by a rehabilitation plan in the 1990s. Our results, based on chemical parameters and phytoplankton showed some signs of improvement of water conditions in the upper layer. However, macrozoobenthic findings of this study did not reflect such a recovery in bottom life.An approach to the Ecological Quality Status (EQS) assessment was performed by applying the biotic indices BENTIX, AMBI, BOPA, BO2A. Our final assessment was based on 'expert-judgements' and revealed a very disturbed overall ecosystem with 'bad' EQS for the station at the head of the estuary,  'poor' in the rest of the estuary and 'moderate' EQS only in the middle station.
