Objective: To describe a systematic approach to active learning using a lesson template with a graphic organizer activity. Innovation: The authors describe a tool that can be used to incorporate a graphic organizer activity into a traditional lecture class to promote active learning. This interactive template offers a step-by-step process to plan and implement a graphic organizer activity. The graphic organizer was used in a contact dermatitis lecture as part of a Nonprescription Medicines course for first year pharmacy students. Critical Analysis: A survey of students immediately after the activity identified that students agreed they were interested in the activity, were engaged with the activity, and perceived an understanding of the course material. An instructor reflection revealed that students were excited and identified some instructor challenges to executing the activity. Next Steps: Instructors interested in using graphic organizers in lectures can refer to this approach for guidance.  In addition to a graphic organizer, the structure of this template can be applied to different active learning activities, thus creating consistency in delivering active learning.   Article Type: Note

AbstractIn this study, we compare the pathological mitosis rates, chromosomal abnormalities and nucleolar organizer activity in Pinus pallasiana D. Don seedlings from natural population in the Crimean Mountains and from the urban plantations in the steppe of Ukraine. On the stages of anaphase and telophase of mitosis, such chromosomal abnormalities as bridges were most often found in the seeds of plantations exposed to air pollutants, whereas lead and agglutination of chromosomes were found in seeds from iron ore dump stands. Our studies have shown that P. pallasiana can be used for genotoxic monitoring of technogenic polluted lands.

AbstractThe Hydra polyp regenerates its head by transforming the gastric tissue below the wound into a head organizer made of two antagonistic cross-reacting components. The activator, previously characterized as Wnt3, drives apical differentiation by acting locally and auto-catalytically. The uncharacterized inhibitor, produced under the control of the activator, prevents ectopic head formation. By crossing RNA-seq data obtained in a β-catenin(RNAi) screen performed in planarians and a quantitative analysis of positional and temporal gene expression in Hydra, we identified Sp5 as a transcription factor that fulfills the head inhibitor properties: a Wnt/β-catenin inducible expression, a graded apical-to-basal expression, a sustained up-regulation during head regeneration, a multi-headed phenotype when knocked-down, a repressing activity on Wnt3 expression. In mammalian cells, Hydra and zebrafish Sp5 repress Wnt3 promoter activity while Hydra Sp5 also auto-activates its expression, possibly via β-catenin and/or Tcf/Lef1 interaction. This work identifies Sp5 as a novel potent feedback loop inhibitor of Wnt/β-catenin signaling across eumetazoans.
