The mathematical theory of computed tomography (CT) was proposed by J. Radon in 1917. It was declared that the projection of whole datasets was needed to reconstruct CT images. Therefore, according to J. Radon’s original theory, local cone beam CT (local CBCT) was impossible to achieve. In this paper, I discuss how local CBCT was discovered and developed. Its development required many technical elements, such as a turntable and X-ray television system, for basic experiments such as those on which narrow collimation theory and multifunctional panoramic tomography were based. These experiments endured many failures during development. Now, local CBCT is extremely popular in dental practice because local CBCT has a low radiation dose and high resolution. This paper introduces the technical elements and outlines the important stages during the development of local CBCT in the 1990s.

Abstract In this paper we study lumpy black holes with AdSp × Sq asymptotics, where the isometry group coming from the sphere factor is broken down to SO(q). Depending on the values of p and q, these are solutions to a certain Supergravity theory with a particular gauge field. We have considered the values (p, q) = (5, 5) and (p, q) = (4, 7), corresponding to type IIB supergravity in ten dimensions and eleven-dimensional supergravity respectively. These theories presumably contain an infinite spectrum of families of lumpy black holes, labeled by a harmonic number ℓ, whose endpoints in solution space merge with another type of black holes with different horizon topology. We have numerically constructed the first four families of lumpy solutions, corresponding to ℓ = 1, 2+, 2− and 3. We show that the geometry of the horizon near the merger is well-described by a cone over a triple product of spheres, thus extending Kol’s local model to the present asymptotics. Interestingly, the presence of non-trivial fluxes in the internal sphere implies that the cone is no longer Ricci flat. This conical manifold accounts for the geometry and the behavior of the physical quantities of the solutions sufficiently close to the critical point. Additionally, we show that the vacuum expectation values of the dual scalar operators approach their critical values with a power law whose exponents are dictated by the local cone geometry in the bulk.

This study focused on the production and characterization of biochars from three types of crop residues comprising cotton stems, corn cobs and sorghum stems. The reactor used was a local cone kiln made from a 200-liter drum. The production parameters measured included the duration of pyrolysis, the amount of biochar produced and the production yield. The chemical characteristics of the biochars were determined using the usual analytical methods used for organic amendment analyses. According to the study, pyrolysis time, biochar quantities and production yields depended on the type of crop residues. The three types of biochar obtained showed high C/N values indicating that their use as soil amendment must be combined with mineral fertilizers to ensure good plant development and crop yield. The heavy metal contents of the three biochar types complied with the international standards recommended for biochars by the International Biochar Initiative (IBI) and by the European Biochar Certificate (EBC). The production and the use of Biochar from crop residues is an interesting alternative for sustainable soil fertility management in the Sahelian countries.
