The paper introduces a concept of assessment of a ductile iron casting process with use of the rule-based approach, known as DRSA (dominance-based rough set approach). The research was conducted in a large Polish foundry. The collected data concern the chemical composition and mechanical properties of the used ductile cast iron. In the paper, a methodology of creating a rule-based moulding model for the tensile strength was proposed. The quality, sensitivity and accuracy of the model extracted from the data were examined. The studies proved its usefulness in the industrial practice and for aiding of the decision making process.

Abstract The paper presents the results of investigations of the growth of protective coating on the surface of ductile iron casting during the hot-dip galvanizing treatment. Ductile iron of the EN-GJS-600-3 grade was melted and two moulds made by different technologies were poured to obtain castings with different surface roughness parameters. After the determination of surface roughness, the hot-dip galvanizing treatment was carried out. Based on the results of investigations, the effect of casting surface roughness on the kinetics of the zinc coating growth was evaluated. It was found that surface roughness exerts an important effect on the thickness of produced zinc coating.

Mechanical properties of ductile iron casting are strongly inclined with metal matrix microstructure, graphite elements presence and impurities rate. Increasing in the number of graphite elements near to sphere shape (nodule), more superior mechanical properties will be realized. Automotive castings normally produced in mass production due to high demand; vertical moulding configuration is one of the best options for producing mass quantity automotive castings. This study aim to discover either the vertical moulding configuration will affects the nodularity properties distribution for different cavity position in the mold. In this study, ductile iron disc brake castings have been produced by in-mold Mg treatment using vertical parted molding method. Samples from different cavity position were taken and analyzed their nodularity distribution. Image processing computer procedure-Lieca was used to characterize the graphite morphology of the samples. The result shows that the different cavity position of vertical orientation disc brake casting produced dissimilar distribution of graphite. Higher position of cavity has higher nodule count and round graphite.

Ductile iron specimen with dimensions of Φ590mm×800mm were prepared by treating the melt with an yttrium-containing nodulizer. Cooling curves at four locations____the center location, the location 85mm distant from the center, the location 170mm distant from the center and the location 255mm distant from the center of the heavy ductile iron casting Φ590mm×800mm was obtained. The effect of yttrium and magnesium on microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated, and the factors on the distribution of chunky graphite in the specimen were discussed as well. The results show that the largest amount of chunky graphite and the lowest mechanical properties appear at the location 170mm distant from the center. Excessive yttrium and magnesium content at the location 170mm distant from the center is the main factor for the large amount of chunky graphite. The characteristics of the solidification mode____pasty solidification and the considerably long solidification of the casting are the basic reasons for the distribution of chunky graphite of the heavy ductile iron casting Φ590mm×800mm.
