Materials containing heterogeneous nanostructures hold great promise for achieving superior mechanical properties. However, the strengthening effect due to plastically inhomogeneous deformation in heterogeneous nanostructures has not been clearly understood. Here, we investigate a prototypical heterogeneous nanostructured material of gradient nanotwinned (GNT) Cu to unravel the origin of its extra strength arising from gradient nanotwin structures relative to uniform nanotwin counterparts. We measure the back and effective stresses of GNT Cu with different nanotwin thickness gradients and compare them with those of homogeneous nanotwinned Cu with different uniform nanotwin thicknesses. We find that the extra strength of GNT Cu is caused predominantly by the extra back stress resulting from nanotwin thickness gradient, while the effective stress is almost independent of the gradient structures. The combined experiment and strain gradient plasticity modeling show that an increasing structural gradient in GNT Cu produces an increasing plastic strain gradient, thereby raising the extra back stress. The plastic strain gradient is accommodated by the accumulation of geometrically necessary dislocations inside an unusual type of heterogeneous dislocation structure in the form of bundles of concentrated dislocations. Such a heterogeneous dislocation structure produces microscale internal stresses leading to the extra back stress in GNT Cu. Altogether, this work establishes a fundamental connection between the gradient structure and extra strength in GNT Cu through the mechanistic linkages of plastic strain gradient, heterogeneous dislocation structure, microscale internal stress, and extra back stress. Broadly, this work exemplifies a general approach to unraveling the strengthening mechanisms in heterogeneous nanostructured materials.

The most important cause of the climate changes in the past few decades are due to the emission of CO2.It may be due to human or natural processes such as disposal of waste material from the thermal power plant, consuming natural resources or production of cement etc. Due to increase in infrastructure created the demand of more construction industries. Increasing importance of environmental protection and energy storage has led to the investigation of alternative binders to replace the cement. Geopolymers are an alternative binder for cement concrete production because of their superior mechanical properties. In the present investigation, for developing the Geopolymer concrete (GPC), high calcium fly ash is used as an alternative binder with Na2SiO3 and NaOH as alkaline liquids. Fresh and hardened properties of GPC are examined by appropriate experiments. Alkaline liquid to High calcium Fly ash ratio (AL: HCF) of 0.45, 0.55,0.6 and 0.65 are used with 8M of NaOH and the developed GPC is kept in ambient curing for 7 days, 28 days, and 56 days. It was observed that with an increase of AL to HCF ratio in the fresh GPC increased the workability of GPC. Increase of AL to HCF ratio in GPC mix increased the compressive strength, tensile strength and flexural strength up to a certain limit.

Recently, heterostructured (HS) materials, consisting of hard and soft zones with dramatically different strengths, have been developed and received extensive attention because they have been reported to exhibit superior mechanical properties over those predicted by the rule of mixtures. Due to the accumulation of geometrically necessary dislocations during plastic deformation, a back stress is developed in the soft zones to increase the yield strength of HS materials, which also induce forward stress in the hard zones, and a global hetero-deformation induced (HDI) hardening to retain ductility. High-entropy alloys (HEAs) and medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) or multicomponent alloys usually contain three or more principal elements in near-equal atomic ratios and have been widely studied in the world. This review paper first introduces concepts of HS materials and HEAs/MEAs, respectively, and then reviewed emphatically the mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of HS HEAs/MEAs. Finally, we discuss the prospect for industrial applications of the HS HEAs and MEAs.

The hypothesis of the present research is that by altering the substrate topography and/or stiffness to make it biomimetic, we can modulate cells behavior. Substrates with similar surface chemistry and varying stiffnesses and topographies were prepared. Bulk PCL and CNTs-reinforced PCL composites were manufactured by solvent casting method and electrospinning and further processed to obtain tunable moduli of elasticity in the range of few MPa. To ensure the same chemical profile for the substrates, a protein coating was added. Substrate topography and properties were investigated. Further on, the feedback of Wharton’s Jelly Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells to substrates characteristics was investigated. Solvent casting scaffolds displayed superior mechanical properties compared to the corresponding electrospun films. However, the biomimetic fibrous texture of the electrospun substrates induced improved feedback of the cells with respect to their viability and proliferation. Cells’ adhesion and differentiation was remarkably pronounced on solvent casting substrates compared to the electrospun substrates. Soft substates improved cells multiplication and migration, while stiff substrates induced differentiation into bone cells. Aspects related to the key factors and the ideal properties of substrates and microenvironments were clarified, aiming towards the deep understanding of the required optimum biomimetic features of biomaterials.

Abstract In this work, aluminum (Al)-based nanocomposites reinforced with graphite nanoplatelets (GnPs) have been fabricated by conventional sintering as well as spark plasma sintering (SPS) techniques, and their microstructure and mechanical properties have been studied. The powder metallurgy (PM) route has been adopted to fabricate the various Al–GnP nanocomposites. Characterization of the powder mixtures and the nanocomposites has been carried out through different characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and Raman spectroscopy. Compressive strength, Young's modulus, density, and Vickers microhardness of the various nanocomposites have also been determined. The HRTEM results show the formation of nonstoichiometric Al4C3 nanoparticles – during both conventional sintering and SPS – at the interface of the Al grains and GnP, which worsen the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. SPSed nanocomposites show superior mechanical properties due to higher densification, finer grain size, and homogeneous nanofiller dispersion in the Al matrix, compared to the conventionally sintered Al–GnP nanocomposites.

Polymer grouting is carried out between the steel panel and surrounding soil in underground engineering, and the polymer material consists of isocyanates and polyols. The isocyanate/polyol composite slurry expands rapidly due to chemical reaction and solidifies immediately. Then, a dense impermeable polymer layer is formed after rapid expansion of isocyanate and polyol, which is widely used for ground reinforcement and foundation remediation. Thus, a steel panel-polymer composite structure is developed. Mechanical properties of the steel panel-polymer structure are studied. The results show that the steel panel-polymer structure exhibited excellent mechanical properties. The steel panel and polymer layer should be designed above 3 mm and 10 mm in thickness, respectively. The steel panel showed superior mechanical properties to those of polymer layers. Considering good rigidity of the steel panel and good flexibility of the polymer layer, the steel panel and polymer layer presented perfect interfacial contact. It is concluded that the mechanical properties of the whole structure were increasingly enhanced with the increase of the steel panel thickness and the structural flexibility increased with the thickness of the polymer layer. Besides, the combination of the steel panel and polymer layer could also improve the mechanical properties of this coupling structure. This study provided an initial attempt for investigating the feasibility of applying polyurethane foam to steel panels in underground engineering. The stress analysis along the grouting direction inside the prefabricated wall was conducted. It may lay the foundation for further application of polymer grouting in underground engineering.

Abstract The ability to produce a dense part of Al-based metal matrix nanocomposites using binder jetting followed by infiltration was investigated. A green density above 1.58 g/cm3 was determined to be necessary for spontaneous direct liquid infiltration to commence, and a press-compaction-assisted binder jetting process is needed to achieve this benchmark. A green density of 1.64±0.02 g/cm3 only resulted in a density of 1.65±0.03 g/cm3 by sintering at 1050 °C, which showed that densification is not possible with sintering alone. However, infiltration with Al-6061 produced specimens with a density of 2.74±0.04 g/cm3, which corresponded to a density improvement of 65%. Moreover, the infiltrated specimens had a low open porosity of 2.71±0.95% and a high hardness of 54 HRA. This study suggests that it is feasible to manufacture parts with complex shapes and superior mechanical properties using binder Jetting followed by infiltration.
