Aluminum alloy (Al-7075-T6) samples were analyzed to determine the in-depth residual stress profile induced by a shot-peening treatment. The influence of coverage degree and Almen intensity on the surface residual stress and on the sub-surface residual stress gradient was investigated. Residual stress profiles were obtained using three different techniques: (i) standard laboratory X-ray diffraction (XRD) residual stress analysis with progressive chemical layer-removal; (ii) XRD residual stress analysis with synchrotron radiation using different X-ray energies, thus changing the penetration depths, and (iii) Blind Hole Drilling (BHD). A comprehensive comparison of the results given by the used techniques is shown.

In order to study the effect of nitriding or shot peening on the surface modification and fatigue properties of martensitic stainless-steel Custom 465, the residual stress and micro-hardness of the strengthened layer are determined by X-ray and micro-hardness tester, respectively. The up-and-down method is used to measure the rotational bending fatigue strength at 1 × 107 cycles, and the fatigue fracture characteristic is observed by scanning electron microscopy. The relationship between surface residual stress and internal fatigue limit of surface strengthening treatment is discussed. Results show that nitriding or shot peening surface strengthening layer forms a certain depth of compressive residual stress, where in the surface compressive residual stress of the nitrided specimens is greater than the shot peened specimens. The micro-hardness of the nitrided or shot peened surface strengthening layer is significantly improved, where in the surface micro-hardness of nitriding specimens are higher than shot peening specimens. The nitriding or shot peening surface strengthening can significantly improve the fatigue limit of Custom 465, wherein the fatigue limits of nitrided and shot peened surface strengthened specimens are 50.09% and 50.66% higher than that of the un-surface strengthened specimens, respectively. That is, the effect of the two strengthening methods on fatigue limit is not very different. The fracture characteristics show that the fatigue crack of the un-surface strengthened specimens originates from the surface, while the fatigue crack of surface strengthened specimens originates from the subsurface layer under the strengthened layer. The relationship between the internal fatigue limit and the surface residual stress of the surface strengthened specimen can be used as a method for predicting the fatigue limit of the surface strengthened specimens.

Cold coiling of high tensile steel rod into helical coil springs for the automotive industry is a new technique being implemented amongst spring manufacturers worldwide. To characterise this coil production process, the neutron strain scanning technique has been employed to non-destructively elucidate the influence production stages have on the tri-axial residual stress state. Samples investigated represented key production steps in the cold-coil forming process: Cold coiling; Tempering; Hot setting; Hot peening; Shot peening. Investigations revealed that the stress field was axi-symmetrical, that the dominant variation in all samples occurred along the hoop direction (helical circumference), whilst the radial and axial stresses are substantially lower. Accurate two-dimensional stress maps of the rod cross section have been compiled revealing key features associated with the cold coiling step. Comparison of the stress fields after each production step revealed altered stress values. The final shot peening process stage not only reduced stress concentrations at the internal bore, but contributed to the establishment of favourable surface residual stress conditions that enhance the fatigue life of the final product.

The effect of ultrasonic shot peening on the environmental hydrogen embrittlement behavior of the 7075-T6 aluminum alloy is investigated. The 7075-T6 tensile specimens were treated by ultrasonic shot peening for 50 s. Surface residual stress and the depth of residual stress under the surface were evaluated using an X-ray diffractometer. Then, the specimens were tensile tested in humid air and dry nitrogen gas by the slow strain rate technique. The results showed that the ultrasonic shot-peened specimen has a superior hydrogen embrittlement resistance. Further, the ultrasonic shot peening changes the fracture mode from an intergranular fracture mode to the transgranular one. It was suggested that ultrasonic shot-peening has two effects on hydrogen embrittlement behavior; the distribution of hydrogen inside the surface layer by introducing dislocations/vacancies as hydrogen traps and reducing the normalized amount of hydrogen trapped per unit length of the grain boundary.
