The last decade has witnessed a steep growth in multimedia traffic due to real-time content delivery such as in online games and video conferencing. In some contexts, MANETs play a key role in the hyperconnectivity of everything in multimedia services. In this context, this work proposes a new scheduling approach based on context-aware mobile nodes for their connectivity. The contribution relies on reporting not only the locations of devices in the network but also their movement identified by sensors. In order to illustrate this approach, we have developed a novel agent-based simulator called MASEMUL for illustrating the proposed approach. The results show that a movement-aware scheduling strategy defined with the proposed approach has decreased the ratio of channel interruptions over another common strategy in mobile networks.

The increase in the demand of content quality and the number of mobile users brings new challenges for the multimedia streaming services in wireless mobile networks. The virtual community technologies are promising by grouping the users with common characteristics to get the gains in the performance of resource lookup and system scalability. In this paper, we propose a novel interaction-aware video community-based content delivery (IVCCD) in wireless mobile networks. IVCCD collects and analyzes the interaction information between users to construct user interaction model and further capture the common characteristics in the request and delivery of video content. IVCCD employs a partition-based community discovery scheme to group the mobile users in terms of the common characteristics and uses a community member management mechanism and a resource sharing scheme to achieve low-cost community maintenance and high searching performance. Extensive tests show how IVCCD achieves much better performance results in comparison with other state-of-the-art solutions.

Today, mobile multimedia applications provide customers with only limited means to define what information they wish to receive. However, customers would prefer to receive content that reflects specific personal interests. In this chapter we present a prototype multimedia application that demonstrates personalised content delivery using the multimedia messaging service (MMS) protocol. The development of the application was based on the multimedia middleware framework METIS, which can be easily tailored to specific application needs. The principle application logic was constructed through three indepdent modules, or “plug-ins” that make use of METIS and its underlying event system: the harverster module, which automatically collects multimedia content from configured RSS feeds, the news module, which builds custom content based on user preferences, and the MMS module, which is reponsible for broadcasting the resulting multimedia messages. Our experience with the implementation demonstrated the rapid and modular development made possible by such a flexible middleware framework.
