Abstract Substituted phenyl-hydroxy pyrrolone derivatives are potential herbicides and are found to be effective inhibitors of photosynthetic electron flow in chloroplasts. Their site of inhibition is localized at the acceptor side of photosystem II similar to DCMU. They have no effect on photophosphoryla­tion. The correlation of photosynthetic acitivity to chemical structure is studied by comparing 36 derivatives. A clear dependence of inhibitory activity on lipophilicity is found. The dependence of herbicidal activity on chemical structure is more complex.

To enhance quinclorac potency, twenty-five derivatives were synthesized containing 3-methyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl by intermediate derivatization methods (IDMs). These compounds were confirmed by melting point (mp), 1HNMR, 13CNMR, and HRMS. The compound 1,3-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl 3,7-dichloroquinoline-8-carboxylate (10a) was determined by X-ray diffraction. The activity of these compounds substituent on the phenyl was: electron-drawing group > neutral group > donor-drawing group, the results was like that of substituted benzyl group on pyrazole. The herbicidal activity assays showed that compounds 1-(2-fluorophenyl)-3-methyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl 3,7-dichloroquinoline-8-carboxylate (8l, EC50 = 10.53 g/ha) and 10a (EC50 = 10.37 g/ha) had an excellent inhibition effect on barnyard grass in greenhouse experiment. Greenhouse safety experiment of rice exhibited almost no difference in plant height and fresh weight treated 10a at stage 1∼2-leaf of rice after 14 days but 8l had a detrimental effect. Two season field assays showed 10a herbicidal activity on barnyard grass at 150 g/ha as equal as 300 g/ha quinclorac in fields in 2019 and 2020. The study demonstrated that 10a could be further researched as a potential herbicide to control barnyard grass in fields.

In this study, a series of novel sec-p-menthane-7-amine derivatives were designed, synthesized, and evaluated to be used as efficient botanical herbicides owing to their post-emergence herbicidal activities against barnyard grass and rape.

The herbicidal effects of aminopentinols, aminohexinols and some synthesized acetylene aminospirths, hydrochloride compounds, as well as the biological activity of their effects in relation to such important crops as cotton and corn were studied. During pretreatment of seeds and weeds, it was found that the studied drugs show different herbicidal activity in relation to annual dicotyledonous and annual grain weeds, depending on their chemical composition and dosage. It has been established that many ammonium salts of acetylene amino alcohols have high biological activity and that their use, depending on the chemical structure and quantity, has biological effects. To determine the biological activity of the studied drugs, the authors used a well-known method of biotestylation in wheat coleoptile. Preemergence treatment by solutions of abovementioned preparates in dependence on their chemical structure and dose have rendered different action on the growth leguminous (nut) and cereals (wheat, sorghum) plants.

Compound 3a showed excellent herbicidal activity against barnyard grass with IC50 = 7.0 mg L−1, and exhibited good selection for rice, wheat, and radish at 100 mg L−1.
