The American Elm (Ulmus americana L.) has been plagued by Dutch Elm Disease (DED), a lethal disease caused by the fungus Ceratocystis ulmi (Buisman) c. Moreau. Since its initial appearance in North America around 1930, DED has wrought inexorable devastation on the American elm population, triggering both environmental and economic losses. In response to the havoc caused by the disease, many attempts have been made to hybridize U. americana with a few ornamentally less desirable, though highly DED resistant, Asian species (mainly the Siberian elm, Ulmus pumila L., and the Chinese elm Ulmus parvifolia Jacq.). The goal is to develop, through breeding efforts, hybrid progeny that display the ornamentally desirable characteristics of U. americana with the disease resistance of the Asian species. Unfortunately, however, all attempts to hybridize U. americana have been prevented by incompatibility. Only through a firm understanding of both compatibility and incompatibility will it be possible to circumvent the incompatibility and hence achieve hybridization.

Cryptotermes Banks, 1906 is the third most diverse kalotermitid genus worldwide after Glyptotermes Froggatt, 1897 and Neotermes Holmgren, 1911, with its greatest diversity found in the Neotropics (Krishna et al. 2013a). Furthermore, the greatest number of species of Cryptotermes are known from the Caribbean Basin (Scheffrahn & Křeček 1999, Casala et al. 2016, Scheffrahn 2019). Although Araujo (1977) and Bacchus (1987) list Cryptotermes domesticus (Haviland, 1898) from Trinidad (treated as mainland) and Panama, respectively, Scheffrahn & Křeček (1999) and Scheffrahn et al. (2009) doubt the existence of this Asian species in the New World. Without C. domesticus, the total extant Neotropical diversity of Cryptotermes is 29 endemic and three exotic species (Constantino 2020).

The first report of Phimodera flori Fieber, 1863 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Scutelleridae) in the Balkan Peninsula (Mt. Olympus, Greece) is presented. This continental European and Central Asian species is rare in southern Europe where it has been found only at high altitudes of the Alps and the Pyrenees so far. It has been regarded as extinct from the 1970’s in many countries. The species is recorded for the first time for Greece, being Mt. Olympus the southernmost known locality.

Sixteen species of Uropodina were found in samples of soil mites from Vietnam, in the Institute of Soil Biology of the Biology Centre AS CR (Èesk Budìjovice, Czech Republic) and the Soil Zoology Collections of the Hungarian Natural History Museum (Budapest, Hungary). Five of them are known species — Angulobaloghia vietnamensis (Kontschán, 2008), Metagynella vietnamensis Hiramatsu, 1981, Uroobovella similitakensis Hirschmann, 1981, Uroobovella topali Hirschmann, 1981, and Uropoda hirschmanni Hiramatsu, 1977. Eleven species are described as new — Trachytes vietnamensis sp. nov., Dinychus serratus sp. nov., Trichouropoda aspera sp. nov., Uroobovella oviformis sp. nov., Uroobovella multisetosa sp. nov., Paradinychus pilosus sp. nov., Phymatodiscus kuni sp. nov., Uropoda setata sp. nov., Uropoda lichenicola sp. nov., Angulobaloghia scrobia sp. nov. and Depressorotunda (Depressorotunda) alveolata sp. nov. The genus Paradinychus is resurrected and three species are moved into this genus, as P. sumatrensis (Vitzthum, 1921) comb. nov. and P. fistulata (Hiramatsu, 1982) comb. nov. Keys to the species of the genus Paradinychus, to the Asian species of Trachytes and to the Uropoda spiculata species group are given.

Four new SW Asian species of Euphorbia subg. Esula, sect. Pithyusa are described and mapped. Euphorbia acanthoclada is known from W Afghanistan and is compared with E. acanthodes. Euphorbia boreo-baluchestanica and E. ziaratensis are found from N Baluchistan of Pakistan and are most similar to E. prolifera and E. sulphurea respectively. Euphorbia kavirensis is known from temperate desert of the interior Iran, Dasht-e Kavir, and is closely related to the Iranian E. gedrosiaca. Diagnosis, description, distribution, ecology, conservation status, image and pertinent notes, if needed, are also considered.
