AbstractOntologies are an emerging means of knowledge representation to improve information organization and management, and they are becoming more prevalent in the domain of engineering design. The task of creating new ontologies manually is not only tedious and cumbersome but also time consuming and expensive. Research aimed at addressing these problems in creating ontologies has investigated methods of automating ontology reuse mainly by extracting smaller application ontologies from larger, more general purpose ontologies. Motivated by the wide variety of existing learning algorithms, this paper describes a new approach focused on the reuse of domain-specific ontologies. The approach integrates existing software tools for natural language processing with new algorithms for pruning concepts not relevant to the new domain and extending the pruned ontology by adding relevant concepts. The approach is assessed experimentally by automatically adapting a design rationale ontology for the software engineering domain to a new one for the related domain of engineering design. The experiment produced an ontology that exhibits comparable quality to previous attempts to automate ontology creation as measured by standard content performance metrics such as coverage, accuracy, precision, and recall. However, further analysis of the ontology suggests that the automated approach should be augmented with recommendations presented to a domain expert who monitors the pruning and extending processes in order to improve the structure of the ontology.

Project management is an important business operation factor for the majority of modern companies and public administrations. Therefore, its efficiency represents a challenge to all project teams and depends on the organizational, resource-based and technical complexities. Numerous studies are thus related to the project management efficiency and techniques of its application. In this context, modern business strategies oriented toward the creation and retention of value recognize the importance of the relationship between project management and company organization and management. In order for the system to completely satisfy the purpose, numerous factors should be brought in harmony, from working processes to systems of planning, reporting and analysis. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of existing systems for monitoring of project management within modern organizations are presented and the model for effective project management is accordingly proposed with the aim of eliminating disadvantages of business processes and planning procedures.

eCommerce and the Information Age are characterized by a shift in critical resources towards knowledge and organizational skills and away from Industrial Age land and capital. The extended enterprise is also becoming the norm, and managers are increasingly having to not only identify the “core competence” of their firm, but also measure and manage it both inside and outside the formal boundaries of the firm. Unfortunately, they are faced with a void of useful management tools to help them do so. This chapter describes a tool that may become indispensable to Information Age management: the Knowledge Matrix. Basically, it is a device for mapping the knowledge resources of the organization, their strategic importance and who sends, receives and shares them. As such, it can be used to leverage organizational capabilities that already exist (which few organizations achieve) as well as build new capabilities. It is a structural tool for: • Defining and building the firm’s Core Competence; • Identifying new products, markets and strategic partners; • Planning information and communications infrastructures; • Managing inter- and intra-organizational relationships; and • Managing organizational change.
