Abstract This paper deals with the numerical design of a floating offshore wind turbine outdoor large-scale prototype based on the DTU 10MW. The objective of this work is to develop a numerical simulation environment for the design of an outdoor scaled prototype. The numerical model is realized coupling the preliminary designed Blue Growth Farm large-scale turbine model with a traditional floater, the OC3 spar buoy. The numerical model is used to evaluate the loads associated with the wind turbine when combined to a floating foundation, with the focus on the coupling between the dynamics of the control system and the one of the floating platform. In addition to this, also the consistency of loads on crucial turbine components is an interesting test bench for the evaluation of the dynamical effects and drives the final design of the physical model.

Abstract The mooring system for a floating offshore wind turbine is a critical sub-system that ensures the safe station keeping of the platform and has a key influence on hydrodynamic stability. R&D efforts have increasingly explored the benefits of nonlinear mooring systems for this application, as they have the potential to reduce the peak mooring loads and fatigue cycling, ultimately reducing the system cost. This paper reports on a hydraulic based mooring component that possesses these characteristics, attributable mostly to the non-linear deformation of a flexible bladder. This is not a typical hydraulic component and, as a consequence, modeling its dynamic performance is non-trivial. This paper addresses this by introducing an analogy to numerically model the system, in which the functionality of the mooring component is compared to that of a hydraulic cylinder. The development of a working model in Simscape Fluids is outlined, and is subsequently used to simulate the IMS in a realistic environment. It is found that the numerical model captures a number of the dynamic performance characteristics observed in a previously tested prototype of the IMS.

When the offshore wind energy industry attempts to develop in cold regions, ice load becomes the main technological challenge for offshore wind turbine foundation design. Dynamic ice loads acting on wind turbine foundations should be calculated in a reasonable way. The scope of this study is to present a numerical model that considers the non-simultaneous ice crushing failure acting on the vertical structure of a wind turbine’s foundation. The local ice crushing force at the contact surface between the ice sheet and structure is calculated. The boundary of the ice sheet is updated at each time step based on the indentation length of the ice sheet according to its structure. Ice loads are validated against two model tests with three different structure models developed by other researchers. The time series of the ice forces derived from the simulation and model tests are compared. The proposed numerical model can capture the main trends of ice–wind turbine foundation interaction. The simulation results agree well with measured data from the model tests in terms of maximum ice force, which is a key factor for wind turbine design. The proposed model will be helpful for assisting the initial design of wind turbine foundations in cold regions.

The experimental proof of the floating wind turbine has been started off Goto Islands in Japan. Furthermore, the project of floating wind farm is afoot off Fukushima Prof. in north eastern part of Japan. It is essential for realization of the floating wind farm to comprehend its safety, electric generating property and motion in waves and wind. The scale model experiments are effective to catch the characteristic of floating wind turbines. Authors have mainly carried out scale model experiments with wind turbine models on SPAR buoy type floaters. The wind turbine models have blade-pitch control mechanism and authors focused attention on the effect of blade-pitch control on both the motion of floater and fluctuation of rotor speed. In this paper, the results of scale model experiments are discussed from the aspect of motion of floater and the effect of blade-pitch control.
