The platinum-rich intermetallic compounds GdPt2In and GdPt2Sn were synthesized by arc-melting of the elements and subsequent annealing. The structures were refined from single crystal X-ray diffractometer data: ZrPt2Al type, space group P63/mmc, a = 455.1(1), c = 899.3(3) pm, wR2 = 0.0361, 166 F2 values, 9 variables for GdPt2In, and a = 453.2(1), c = 906.5(2) pm, wR2 = 0.0915, 166 F2 values, 9 variables for GdPt2Sn. The platinum and indium (tin) atoms build up threedimensional [Pt2In] and [Pt2Sn] networks with short Pt-In (Pt-Sn) distances and Pt2 dumb-bells (290 and 297 pm in GdPt2In and GdPt2Sn). The gadolinium atoms have coordination number 14 with 8 Pt and 6 In (Sn) neighbors. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on GdPt2In show Curie-Weiss behavior with an experimental magnetic moment of 8.06(2) μB/Gd atom. GdPt2In orders ferromagnetically at 27.7(2) K

ABSTRACTThe influence of surface magnetization on the surface segregation in binary alloys with one magnetic component is studied. Based in a model in which the local magnetic moment on the ferromagnetic atoms is determined by the local environment, the internal energy is calculated within the mean field approximation. We applied the model to dilute CuNi alloys and we find that magnetism favors the segregation of Ni, contrary to what it is found in the paramagnetic phase.

Jaccarino and Walker proposed that in certain alloy systems a considered kind of atom attains a constant value of the magnetic moment if it is surrounded by at least a minimum number of nearest-neighbor atoms of a certain kind, and that it is nonmagnetic otherwise. It is shown by ab initio supercell calculations within the LMTO method that the system Nbi−xMox with 1% iron approximately fulfills the Jaccarino-Walker hypothesis, whereas the alloy FexRh1−x does not. The physical mechanism for the destruction of the Fe moment in bcc alloys with 4d and 5d transition metals is elucidated.

Neutrinos interacting with the vacuum of vector bosons and leptons possess important vacuum electromagnetic characteristics: viz., the anomalous magnetic moment Δμvacν and the mean-square radius of charge distribution <r2>1/2. As a result, neutrinos, just like neutrons, may interact with an external magnetic field.

We consider a quantum charged particle moving in the x y plane under the action of a time-dependent magnetic field described by means of the linear vector potential of the form A = B ( t ) − y ( 1 + β ) , x ( 1 − β ) / 2 . Such potentials with β ≠ 0 exist inside infinite solenoids with non-circular cross sections. The systems with different values of β are not equivalent for nonstationary magnetic fields or time-dependent parameters β ( t ) , due to different structures of induced electric fields. Using the approximation of the stepwise variations of parameters, we obtain explicit formulas describing the change of the mean energy and magnetic moment. The generation of squeezing with respect to the relative and guiding center coordinates is also studied. The change of magnetic moment can be twice bigger for the Landau gauge than for the circular gauge, and this change can happen without any change of the angular momentum. A strong amplification of the magnetic moment can happen even for rapidly decreasing magnetic fields.
