Project planning is crucial for fruitful completion of a software development project. In case of a certified software development organisation, one can guess whether the software development projects are planned properly or not. But, what to do for a non-certified organisation? The objective of this study is to address this problem. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey has been conducted by involving experienced practitioners. The results show that several software development organisations follow Capability Maturity Model Integration) Project Planning-Process Area practices unofficially. Such organisations are potential candidate organisations for software process improvement initiatives, and would be cheap and safe for successful completion of a project. Software Process Improvement (SPI) has become the survival key of numerous software development organizations who want to deliver their products cheaper, faster, and better. A software process ultimately describes the way that organizations develop their software products and supporting services; meanwhile, SPI on the other hand, is the act of changing the software process and maintenance activities. This chapter purposefully describes the benefits of software process improvement. The Capability Maturity Model (CMM) and the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) are briefly surveyed and extensively discussed. Prior literature on the benefits and impacts of CMM and CMMI-based software process improvement is also highlighted.

The majority of software development organizations all over the world are small and medium enterprises. These organizations have realized that it is crucial for their business to improve their processes and working methods but they are lacking the knowledge and resources to do it. Successful implementation of SPI methodologies in small and medium-sized software enterprises (SMEs) is generally not possible because such organizations are not capable of investing the cost of implementing these programs. Limited resources and strict deadlines to complete the projects make it further difficult to implement SPI programs which can also affect quality issues in software project. There are various SPI methodologies to address these issues which have been also deployed in these organizations. In this paper, recent and significant SPI methodologies (OWPL, ASPE-MSC, iFLAP, PRISMS, SPM, MESOPYME) for SMEs are compared and discussed. This will facilitate the maturity of software process improvement in SMEs, standardization and also contribute in the development of automation tools for SPIs in future.

O desenvolvimento de novos produtos, que atendam às necessidades do mercado consumidor, é atividade estratégica para sustentabilidade das organizações. O objetivo deste artigo é comparar e avaliar o nível de maturidade desses processos em duas montadoras de veículos instaladas na região Sul Fluminense do País. São discutidas algumas características dos processos, expõe-se o modelo de avaliação, baseado nos critérios do CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration), e são apresentados os resultados de pesquisa que investigou o nível de maturidade junto a 47 representantes das empresas estudadas. Como resultado, foi possível identificar lacunas na estruturação dos PDP's, com diversas práticas e ferramentas usadas de forma isolada e não integradas, havendo campo suficiente - no entendimento dos próprios executivos - para serem aprimorados e refinados, o que permitiria torná-los mais completos, abrangentes e potentes para alavancar os resultados de mercado e financeiros das próprias organizações.
