The act of changing a product by substituting technologies remains a challenging problem for companies with incumbent and dominant designs. This paper describes a new method to quantify the degree of this change based on the graph edit distance of functional models of products. The knowledge structure of a product is represented by its functional model using the ontology of the functional basis. Its knowledge structure is then compared to an equivalent small-world graph, widely regarded as the most efficient structure for information sharing. Finally, the graph edit distance between a product model and its equivalent small-world graph is calculated. This paper demonstrates a general purpose manner to study design innovation through technological transformation.

The main goal of an Indoor Positioning System (IPS) is to estimate the position of mobile devices in indoor environments. For this purpose, the primary source of information is the signal strength of packets received by a set of routers. The fingerprint technique is one of the most used techniques for IPSs. By using supervised machine learning techniques, it trains a model with the received signal intensity information so it can be used to estimate the positions of the devices later in an online phase. Although the k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN) is one of the most widely used classification methods due to its accuracy, it has no scalability since a sample that needs to be classified must be compared to all other samples in the training database. In this work, we use a novel hierarchical navigable small world graph technique to build a search structure so the location of a sample can be efficiently found, allowing the IPSs to be used in large-scale scenarios or run on devices with limited resources. To carry out our performance evaluation, we proposed a synthetic IPS dataset generator as well as implemented a complete real-world, large-scale IPS testbed. We compared the performance of our graph-based solution with other known kNN variants, such as Kd-Tree and Ball-Tree. Our results clearly show the performance gains of the proposed solution at 98% when compared to the classic kNN and at least 80% when compared to tree-based approaches.

North- East India is an under veiled region with an awe-inspiring landscape, different groups of ethnic people, their culture and heritage. Contemporary writers from this region aspire towards a vision outside the tapered ethnic channel, and they represent a shared history. In their writings, the cultural memory is showcased, and the intensity of feeling overflows the labour of technique and craft. Mamang Dai presents a rare glimpse into the ecology, culture, life of the tribal people and history of the land of the dawn-lit mountains, Arunachal Pradesh, through her novel The Legends of Pensam. The word ‘Pensam’ in the title means ‘in-between’,  but it may also be interpreted as ‘the hidden spaces of the heart’. This is a small world where anything can happen. Being adherents of the animistic faith, the tribes here believe in co-existence with the natural world along with the presence of spirits in their forests and rivers. This paper attempts to draw an insight into the culture and gender of the Arunachalis with special reference to The Legends of Pensam by Mamang Dai.
