Purpose The purpose of this study is to demonstrate in the context of quality assurance (QA), how stakeholders define quality education and its connections to maximize value for the stakeholder using a grounded theory approach. Design/methodology/approach A four-stage research design using grounded theory methodology was used to develop and elicit a theory, after which a single-case study design with embedded coding and analysis was used to examine the QA – Maximize Value for stakeholder’s relationships. The sample consisted of 16 participants who had visibility over the entire QA – Maximize Value relationship, were knowledgeable, willing to participate and had between 4 and 12 years’ higher education experience. The data was collected through focus, elite groups and in-depth interviews based on the participants’ perspectives of their experiences. The collected data was subjected to content analysis. The following research questions focused on: definition of QA, the definition of quality education and stakeholders’ expectations for the education setting. Findings The study identified 10 categories that drive the QA – Maximize Value for stakeholder relationships in higher education settings. The categories are, namely, the definition of QA; definition of quality management; value for governing council; value for lecturers and staff; value for students; value for employers; value for government; definition of quality education; continuous improvement; and QA in universities. The main findings of the research related to “how” and “why” QA create value for stakeholders. The results of the study indicate that the governing council representatives’ (key stakeholders) expected value creation through improved management and proper education policy. The expected value creation for lecturers and university staff included career advancement, good working conditions of service, remuneration and the excellent performance of students. The paper finds that QA in higher education is contingent on senior management commitment to the strategic decision on overall objectives, management of the facility, financial and human resources, which are geared toward ensuring effective teaching, student learning and value maximization for all stakeholders. Research limitations/implications The limitation of the study is that the major stakeholders considered were all from universities. Other stakeholders such as employers from the industry and other sectors should be included in a future study. Practical implications Based on the study findings, two major implications for training of senior management, deans and heads of departments in the concepts of QA to maximize value for all stakeholders; and the QA system selected for the university must be “fit for purpose” were drawn, leading to recommendations for future practice. These findings can help universities to develop strategies that improve educational quality and maximize value for all stakeholders. The authors suggested some propositions that can be examined in-depth in future research endeavors so as to enhance the understanding of the predictors of QA in education and the expectations of different stakeholders. Originality/value The originality of the study lies in the perspective of experienced participants who had visibility over the entire QA –Maximize Value relationship and were knowledgeable. Based on the use of the grounded theory approach and the view of major stakeholders used in this research, the findings emphasize the stakeholders’ – driven definition of quality education that focuses on value maximization for all stakeholders. This is different from the majority of the existing definitions in the quality literature that are primarily standard-driven, focusing on meeting a pre-defined set of standards, specifications, requirements and are set internally or externally. The approach provides an opportunity to increase the credibility and rigor of grounded theory research.

Purpose – Banks and corporate customers have realized that bank-corporate relationship is important but little is known about why and how banks establish and exploit relationships. No comprehensive theory has explained relationship banking and in order to get a better understanding the purpose of this paper is to investigate why and how banks and companies communicate in order to create value. Design/methodology/approach – This study adopts a qualitative methodology and a grounded theory approach was adopted. In total, 34 in-depth interviews were conducted with banks and 15 with corporate managers. Grounded theory models are developed based on interview data. Findings – It was found that the nature of bank-corporate relationship is long term. The relationship is based on trust-based personal communications between banks and corporate customers. Macro conditions including the advances in technology, financial regulation and business globalization were considered when the case banks adopted relationship banking. Some intervening conditions including customer information and knowledge, customer needs and customer confidence also influence the development of relationship banking. The interviewees perceived that the case banks gained benefits including better customer retention economy, risk management efficiency and greater effectiveness in maintaining sustainable profitability. The corporate customers gained benefits including fund availability, product availability, service quality, help in-time and business platform. Originality/value – This study derives concepts and categories from primary data and identifies relationships among these theoretical elements. This investigation provides a comprehensive picture of relationship banking and supplies some theoretical and practical implications. Moreover, a value creation and allocation theory of the bank is developed.

The overlapping effect originates from an extension of Mendel’s law in genetics, where one of the interactions between non-alleles is called additive effect. It is more applied in studies on overlapping brand niches in marketing today, with relatively few researches on continuous customer value creation characterised by user adhesion and need matching. Based on the need matching and user adhesion that are features of the mobile Internet era, this article proposes a model for continuous customer value creation based on overlapping marketing. According to grounded theory, this article extracts three types of factors—demand effect, user effect, and overlapping marketing—that affect continuous customer value creation in the smart terminal business. From the perspective of service perception, this research explores how overlapping marketing affects product requirement matching and user adhesion based on a survey of 491 participants, and validates the theoretical model and hypotheses. It is found that overlapping marketing can effectively enhance need matching, improve user adhesion and increase customer value. This research not only addresses the confusion regarding need matching and user adhesion in the communications market, but also reveals how the smart terminal business affects continuous customer value creation in the era of the mobile Internet through overlapping marketing, combined with need matching and user adhesion.

Purpose One of the most significant shifts in contemporary business thinking in the tourism and event industry is co-creation and the framework for adopting this collaborative approach is integral for achieving the fundamental goal of value creation. The purpose of this paper is to enhance the understanding of sustainable events by analysing value co-creation processes from the attendees’ perspective. Design/methodology/approach The methodical framework comprises two steps. First, the study analyses the literature related to festivals and value co-creation, with a focus on sustainable festivals. Second, data rooted research based on grounded theory is conducted, using 12 semi-structured interviews with music festival attendees. Findings Three distinct festival attendee categories were identified: the sustainable co-creation type, the calculating type and the experience type. Within each category, attendees have different attitudes, personal values and experiences as well as individual assessments of what exactly constitutes value and value creation. These three categories are regarded as key factors in describing different kinds of value co-creation processes in the festival context. Research limitations/implications Considering these three types and addressing their personal values, beliefs and value perceptions will allow festival organisers to better manage the development of sustainable festivals and their role as value co-creators. Originality/value This paper addresses the need to better understand how value is created in a festival context. The application of grounded theory also considers scholarly calls for a deeper search into the meaning and essence of value for festival attendees.

Der Theorie-Praxis-Konflikt in der Pflege ist ein bekanntes Phänomen. Bisher liegen jedoch, insbesondere auf die Verhältnisse in der BRD bezogen, kaum fundierte Pflegeforschungsergebnisse zu diesem Thema vor. So wurde ein an den Methoden der Grounded Theory orientiertes qualitatives Forschungsprojekt zur Theorie-Praxis-Vermittlung am Beispiel einer innerbetrieblichen Fortbildungsveranstaltung zu Kinästhetik in der Pflege durchgeführt, das näher untersuchen sollte, was die Umsetzung von Kinästhetik in die Pflegepraxis beeinflußt. Die Forscherin hat dazu nach der Schulung mit den TeilnehmerInnen unter anderem halbstrukturierte Interviews zu deren Erlebnissen bei der Anwendung des Gelernten in ihrer täglichen Arbeit auf Station durchgeführt. Als Ausschnitt aus den Ergebnissen wird der Einfluß der Kategorie «Eigenschaften von Kinästhetik» auf die Umsetzung durch die TeilnehmerInnen an einer Fortbildungsveranstaltung zu diesem Thema dargestellt. Damit wird etwas darüber ausgesagt, inwiefern die Tatsache, daß Kinästhetik als etwas Praktisches, etwas Fremdes und Exotisches, als mit Nähe verbunden, schwierig oder riskant wahrgenommen wird, Auswirkungen auf die Anwendung des neu gelernten Wissens in der Praxis hat. Der Bezug dieser Kategorie zur Schlüssel-Kategorie «Einbau von Wissen und von Neuem» wird abschließend aufgezeigt. Die Ergebnisse der Studie machen deutlich, daß die ausschließliche Konzentration auf Wissensvermittlung der Komplexität des Umsetzungsprozesses nicht gerecht wird.

Hintergrund: Dieser Beitrag präsentiert die Ergebnisse verschiedener qualitativ-explorativer Studien zu Biographien von NS-Verfolgten mit Migrationshintergrund (Juden aus der GUS, Roma, Sinti und ehemaligen polnischen Zwangsarbeitern). Ziel ist die Erhebung der spezifischen Pflegebedürfnisse dieser vulnerablen Klientel im Hinblick auf ihre Abhängigkeit von anderen im Alter, wenn sie medizinische und pflegerische Versorgung benötigt. Methode: Semi-strukturierte Interviews auf der Basis der Grounded Theory wurden eingesetzt, um die soziale und familiale Situation der Befragten zu untersuchen. Ergebnisse: Die Angst, offen über ihre Verfolgungserfahrungen zu sprechen, ist das hervorstechendste Merkmal all dieser Migranten. In vielen Fällen hat das Trauma die Verbindung zu ihrer Umgebung gebrochen und ausgeprägte Gefühle der Isolation und Hilflosigkeit hervorgerufen. Obwohl sie aus unterschiedlichen sozialen Milieus stammen, gibt es eine Reihe von Verhaltensweisen, die ihnen gemeinsam sind und auf eine Verfolgungsgeschichte hinweisen. Zugleich enthüllt die Befragung ihren unsicheren Status als Migranten und ihr Leben in einer Gesellschaft, die sie oft als marginalisierend und ausschließend empfinden.
