As we reach the fifth anniversary of the Declaration of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the tourism sector responsible for over 10% of the world’s GDP still does not have an open-source, sustainable management criteria that would enable and empower them to “walk the talk” to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The purpose of this paper is to fill the gap in the social sciences and business management literature by providing a theoretical Sustainable Strategic Management Model (SSMM) proposal for the Fourth Sector (4S), Small- and Medium-sized (SMEs) Hotel companies (4S-SM-HCs), which are committed and have the will to contribute firmly to the 2030 Agenda. Based on their corporate purpose and aligned with the SDGs, this article provides a holistic proposal with a multi-stakeholder approach, adding the SDG perspective. Through a qualitative research methodology based on two focus groups in which the main stakeholders and the management team of the 4S-SM-HC under examination took part, a theoretical SSMM is co-defined so that the hotel company can make significant contributions to the five areas of the SDGs. Basing their structure on the internationally recognized Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Criteria and co-created through social learning, this SSMM proposes four strategic management axis and develops ten principles of ethical performance (PEP). The main contributions of this article are two: (1) to provide an ecosystemic SSMM proposal to the 4S-SM-HCs to allow them to make significant contributions to the SDGs, and (2) to facilitate a methodological framework with a multi-stakeholder approach and SDG perspective to enable them to contribute to the wellbeing of people, the community and the planet.

Partnerships are essential to delivering the transformational change demanded by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and essential to achieving Agenda 2030. It is therefore necessary to strengthen the partnering capacity of different types of organizations so they can collaborate in multi-stakeholder partnerships. However, partnership working can be costly in terms of time and other resources and is complex. Given the urgency and importance of sustainable development, illustrated by the recent pandemic and social unrest around inequity, we focused on the creation of a partnership that became effective quickly and was able to deliver societal impact at scale. Using a case study approach, the transformational potential and the early stages of “El día después” (in English, “The day after”) were analyzed as it represents a multi-stakeholder partnership forged to frame an SDG-oriented collaborative response to the COVID-19 crisis in Spain. El día después is defined as a partnership incubator, a space where public administrations interact under conditions of equivalence with all the other stakeholders, where private companies can link their innovation processes to other SDG-committed actors and social needs and where the academic sector can participate in a sustained dialogue oriented to the action. Our findings reveal that in order to catalyze the co-creation process and achieve systemic change through a set of connected multi-stakeholder initiatives, a very flexible collaborative arrangement is required, with all partners acting as facilitators. In this way, a solid interdisciplinary team is created, united around a shared vision, with trust-based relationships and a common identity fueling impact-oriented projects targeted to advance the SDGs.

Introduction. As the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN in 2015 offcially specify the current global challenges, they will positively affect the activity of all social institutions in the near future. This article considers the potential competitive advantages that business will acquire providing its engagement into the implementation of the SDGs. The authors suggest that the private sector’s involvement in the global sustainable development related issues has become one of the essential factors of business long-term competitiveness. The article also reviews the leading multinational companies’ solutions and initiatives aimed at the achievement of the socially oriented SDGs. Based on these business cases, the authors identify the key trends that characterize the private sector’s participation in the fulfllment of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.Materials and methods. General and private scientifc methods of cognition (analysis, synthesis, abstraction, generalizations, deduction and induction) form the methodological basis for this study.Results of the study. In the course of the study, the authors disclose several trends that characterize the private sector’s participation in the implementation of the “Agenda 2030”. Besides the companies’ aspiration to participate in the implementation of the SDGs that directly concern their core business operations, many multinational corporations nowadays actively contribute to the achievement of the socially-oriented SDGs which facilitates the resolution of many macroeconomic problems. In addition, there is an obvious trend of cooperation between the private sector and other stakeholders – primarily, governments and nonproft organisations. They create multi-stakeholder partnerships that allow the participants to pool resources and reinforce the positive effects within the implemented projects.Discussion and conclusions. Nowadays the SDGs present a particular guidance for the private sector, so the multinational companies have to review their business strategies in accordance with the challenges formulated on the global agenda. This study revealed the substantial competitive advantages that corporate sector would enjoy in case of its engagement in the implementation of the socially-oriented SDGs.

Education is one of the key goals of sustainable development (SD), which establishes the basis for the improvement of the people’s living conditions. In this logic a special role is played by universities that create an institutional framework for educating citizens on sustainable development, offering a new understanding of social problems. On the one hand, universities can create and promote knowledge about SD by their educational, expert and research activities, hence developing relevant values among people. On the other hand, universities can become an active agent in implementing the concept of SD by introducing it into its own academic activities. The article considers stakeholder approach as one of the approaches to the implementation of the concept of education for sustainable development (ESD). Therefore based on this approach, the article explores the benefits of the key stakeholders of the sustainable university. Low awareness among key stakeholders is one of the significant factors that hindering the implementation of the SD concept. Due to the lack of a sufficient research focused on studying the interests of the main stakeholders in the framework of ESD, this article is an attempt to narrow this gap.

Public sector organizations, primarily higher education institutions (HEIs), are facing greater levels of responsibility since adopting and committing to the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development (SD) and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). HEIs are expected to provide guidance for various stakeholders on this matter, but also to implement this agenda and the SDGs in their institutions. Although the role of these organizations has been recognized, the fields and issues that HEIs should address on their path towards sustainability and SD are still unclear. To provide further clarity, a semi-systematic literature review on sustainability and SD in HEIs was conducted to identify both the key concepts and main research themes that represent sustainability and SD in HEIs and to identify research gaps. This review increases our knowledge of this topic and enhances our understanding of sustainability and SD in the context of HEIs.

AbstractIn this contribution, I examine the links between the human rights basis of the UN Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) and its embeddedness in the UN Sustainable Development Agenda 2030. While the GCM grew out of a development framework, it was rapidly incorporated into the UN human rights system. Even during the negotiation of the GCM, human rights took priority over development. The resistance that was manifested against the GCM on its endorsement by the UN General Assembly was directed not against its development links, but rather concerns about its human rights impact. This paper examines the placing of migration in this dual framework and the ways in which outcomes compatible with both are achievable.

Since the United Nations (UN) approved the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development in 2015, higher education institutions have increasingly demonstrated their commitment by supporting several initiatives. Although a great deal of progress has been made, there is still a lack of integrative approaches to truly implement Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in higher education. This paper presents a practical case that illustrates how to design and articulate SDGs within an institutional setting adopting a holistic approach: EHUagenda 2030 plan of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). It is based on empirical inquiry into global and holistic sustainable transformation and a real experience to move towards a verifiable and pragmatic contribution to sustainability. This plan describes the contribution to 12 of the 17 SDGs, along with three sectorial plans (Equality Campus, Inclusion Campus and Planet Campus), as well as the refocus of the UPV/EHU’s Educational Model and the panel of sustainable development indicators, which addresses the technical aspects of monitoring the SDGs. The methodology (mapping; mainstreaming; diagnosis and definition and, finally, estimation) is systematic and replicable in other universities yet to embark upon this integration. This case study makes a contribution towards the understanding of the complexity of the changes in Higher Education and the ways to approach it.
