A technology and a tool for processing work surfaces in crankshafts and cams of camshafts by endless diamond belts are considered. The characteristics of endless diamond belts and their potentialities in assurance of roughness and efficiency at work surface grinding and polishing are shown. The purposefulness in assurance of an optimum curvilinear transverse section of cams in camshafts by grinding with endless belts is defined. It is shown, that it is possible to control a curvilinear profile of cams in camshafts at the expense of a belt width and a belt tension. It is based on a theoretical basis of the interaction of a rigid die (cam) with the elastic half-space (belt). An optimum curvilinearity of the transverse section of a cam ensures the increase of its life.

Manufacturing of precise couples is the most important key technology for hydraulic products. The hydraulic characteristics are not only strongly correlated with their geometric elements, but also associated with the surface qualities of the couples, including surface roughness and surface texture, and which primarily influence the dead zone, lag rings and friction of the couples. In order to get better surface machining quality of the precise hydraulic couples, the process of surface grinding and polishing was researched. Through process test, the optimum parameters of grinding and polishing processing were found, which made the surface roughness achieved Ra 0.031μm.

The plasma polymerization replica method and its apparatus have been devised by Tanaka (1-3). We have published several reports on its application: surface replicas of biological and inorganic specimens, replicas of freeze-fractured tissues and metal-extraction replicas with immunocytochemical markers. The apparatus for plasma polymerization consists of a high voltage power supply, a vacuum chamber containing a hydrocarbon gas (naphthalene, methane, ethylene), and electrodes of an anode disk and a cathode of the specimen base. The surface replication by plasma polymerization in negative glow phase on the cathode was carried out by gassing at 0.05-0.1 Torr and glow discharging at 1.5-3 kV D.C. Ionized hydrocarbon molecules diffused into complex surface configurations and deposited as a three-dimensionally polymerized film of 1050 nm in thickness. The resulting film on the complex surface had uniform thickness and showed no granular texture. Since the film was chemically inert, resistant to heat and mecanically strong, it could be treated with almost any organic or inorganic solvents.

The paintings by the great Hungarian master Mihaly Munkacsy (1844-1900) made in an 8-9 years period of his activity are deteriorating. The most conspicuous sign of the deterioration is an intensive darkening. We have made an attempt by electron beam microanalysis to clarify the causes of the darkening. The importance of a study like this is increased by the fact that a similar darkening can be observed on the paintings by Munkacsy’s contemporaries e.g Courbet and Makart. A thick brown mass the so called bitumen used by Munkacsy for grounding and also as a paint is believed by the art historians to cause the darkening. For this study, paint specimens were taken from the following paintings: “Studio”, “Farewell” and the “Portrait of the Master’s Wife”, all of them are the property of the Hungarian National Gallery. The paint samples were embedded in a polyester resin “Poly-Pol PS-230” and after grinding and polishing their cross section was used for x-ray mapping.

Abstract. The Simon effect lies on the automatic generation of a stimulus spatial code, which, however, is not relevant for performing the task. Results typically show faster performance when stimulus and response locations correspond, rather than when they do not. Considering reaction time distributions, two types of Simon effect have been individuated, which are thought to depend on different mechanisms: visuomotor activation versus cognitive translation of spatial codes. The present study aimed to investigate whether the presence of a distractor, which affects the allocation of attentional resources and, thus, the time needed to generate the spatial code, changes the nature of the Simon effect. In four experiments, we manipulated the presence and the characteristics of the distractor. Findings extend previous evidence regarding the distinction between visuomotor activation and cognitive translation of spatial stimulus codes in a Simon task. They are discussed with reference to the attentional model of the Simon effect.
