The objective: determination of morphofunctional features of leiomatous nodes and endometrium in women with uterine leiomyoma and infertility to restore reproductive function and prevent recurrence of the underlying disease. Materials and methods. In order to restore reproductive function and prevent recurrence of the underlying disease, morphofunctional features of leiomatous nodes and endometrium in women with uterine leiomyoma and infertility were determined. Thirty samples of leiomyomatous nodes and endometrium were examined, among which 15 were obtained from women with multiple uterine leiomyoma and infertility and 15 samples from women with uterine leiomyoma with isolated uterine leiomyoma. During the study, a general-histological method was used for staining with hematoxylin-eosin and picrofuxin by van Gizon, as well as immunohistochemical methods. Histological examination of the endometrium was performed according to conventional protocol, taking into account the day of the menstrual cycle and R.W. Noyes criteria. Results. In the morphological examination of leiomyomatous nodes in the vast majority of cases the presence of uterine leiomyomas of simple and cell types or their combination was established. In women with multiple uterine leiomyoma, simple-type leiomyoma (53.3%) was predominant, and in patients with isolated leiomyoma the signs of cellular uterine leiomyoma (66.7%) were more frequently found. In 80.0% of women with uterine leiomyoma revealed pathology of the endometrium, such as glandular and glandular-fibrous polyps, simple and complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia, which confirms the theory about the only pathogenetic mechanisms of the emergence of hyperplastic processes of female organs. In 66.7% of women with multiple leiomyomas, signs of chronic endometritis have been found, which exacerbates the pathological process and can have a negative impact on the reproductive function, such as secretory endometrial transformation and impaired blastocyst implantation, and explains a much higher percentage of infertility in the group. Conclusion. In women with impaired reproductive function, patients with uterine leiomyoma, it is necessary to conduct a study of the receptivity of the reproductive organs, namely - the endometrium and leiomatous nodes. This will make it possible to use one or another method of treatment in order to restore reproductive function and prevent recurrence of the underlying disease. The results of a numerical modeling of thermo-gravitational convection of abnormally thermo-viscous fluid in a closed square cavity with two vertical adiabatic walls and two horizontal isothermal walls are presented. A model Newtonian liquid for which the dependence of viscosity on temperature is described by a bell function (Gaussian curve) is considered. The natural convection of inhomogeneous liquid is described by the closed mathematical model based on the continuous mechanics equations written in Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation, where the fluid density is a linear function of temperature. To simulate the fluid flow dynamics, the modified computer code based on the implicit finite volume method and SIMPLE-type algorithm with the second-order temporal accuracy is realized using multiprocessor technology. The effect of the viscosity abnormality on stationary modes of convective flows are studied, the integral heat transfer coefficients in a flat cell are calculated.

Abstract In Part I (loc. cit.) the behavior of a plastic material in the parallel-plate (Williams) plastimeter was studied, and an expression was deduced showing how the rate of decrease in thickness of the sample during compression depends on the volume of the sample, its plastic properties, the compressive load, and the thickness itself. Subsequently, observations were published which showed that the basic principle adopted in this study was incorrect in certain particulars. Peek (loc. cit.), using these observations as a basis, deduced a new expression for the rate of decrease in thickness, though this is too complex for convenient practical use, except in an approximate simplified form. It has now been shown that the expression deduced in Part I, in spite of the inaccurate basis used, is sufficiently near to the truth to render substantially correct the conclusions there stated concerning the plastic properties of unvulcanized rubber stocks. By adopting the more accurate basis used by Peek, moreover, expressions for the rate of decrease in thickness can be deduced for materials showing more complex types of plastic flow than that considered in Part I or by Peek; this had proved impossible by the method previously used. The expression obtained by Peek for the simple type of plastic flow, as well as those now deduced for the more complex types, can be expressed in a form that furnishes a simple and rapid method of examining and analyzing experimental results. As a result of the work described in this paper, it is thus possible to determine, from results obtained with the parallel-plate plastimeter, whether or not a material such as unvulcanized rubber stock exhibits any of the types of plastic flow represented in the general form by Equation 1, and, if so, to find the values of the plastic constants of the material. The procedure is similar to that described in Part I, and consists simply in comparing, by superposition, a set of standard curves drawn on transparent paper with the curve plotted from experimental data. This further development of the method of studying plastic properties by means of the parallel-plate plastimeter should greatly increase its utility as an instrument of research. It has not yet been possible to apply the new method to a systematic study of rubber stocks, but from an examination of existing data it appears that these stocks, tested at 90° C., agree approximately with various forms of the generalized plastic flow equation already referred to.

The diverse types of protonephridial filtration apparatus in the Platyhelminthes provide valuable characters for phylogenetic resolution, yet only one species from the order Prolecithophora has previously been studied. We examined three further species, two belonging to the family Cylindrostomidae and one from the Pseudostomidae, and found a novel arrangement consisting of scattered, short filtration slits in the cytoplasmic cylinder of the terminal cell surrounding the flame of cilia. In these species there are no regular, longitudinal ‘ribs’, such as are found in many other platyhelminth taxa, nor bundles of supporting microtubules in the cylinder wall, and cilia arise at various levels throughout the long terminal cell column rather than in a group at the base of the flame, as is found in most other taxa. The perikaryon lies adjacent to the flame, the wall surrounding the lumen is strengthened by long, cross-striated ciliary rootlets, and the terminal cell is joined to the proximal canal by a septate junction. This simple type of filtration structure bears some resemblance to that found in Tricladida, but is distinctly different from that described in another prolecithophoran, Archimonotresis limophila (Protomonotresidae). This suggests that there may be a fundamental division within the Prolecithophora with regard to protonephridial filtration structures.

This paper describes the results of studies on the wild bees of Nova Scotia, which were carried out in connection with apple pollination investigations in the Annapolis-Cornwallis Valley, Nova Scotia.The biology of the Apoidea in general is reviewed from the literature, and a list of bees taken on apple bloom is given. As the members of the genera Halictus and Andrena were found to be the most important native pollinators, the greater part of the paper is devoted to accounts of the habits and life histories of representative species.The members of the genus Andrena were found to have a simple type, such as is generally found among solitary bees. The females provision the nest and then die; the larvae develop to the pupal stage in their underground cells, then emerge as adults the following season. All Nova Scotian species studied were one-generation forms.The bees of the genus Halictus show a primitive social organization, more complex in some species than in others. The first brood consists of females only, which are apparently sterile and work at nest construction, the gathering of pollen, etc. They are followed later in the season by a brood of males and females; these females, after being fertilized, hibernate for the winter, while the males die in the fall. The hibernating habits of different species are described, and notes are given on some parasites and inquilines of the two genera.

To examine the roles that complex cells play in stereopsis, we have recorded extracellularly from isolated single neurons in the striate cortex of anesthetized paralyzed cats. We measured binocular responses of complex cells using a comprehensive stimulus set that encompasses all possible combinations of positions over the receptive fields for the two eyes. For a given position combination, stimulus contrast could be the same for the two eyes (2 bright or 2 dark bars) or opposite (1 bright and 1 dark). These measurements provide a binocular receptive field (RF) profile that completely characterizes complex cell responses in a joint domain of left and right stimulus positions. Complex cells typically exhibit a strong selectivity for binocular disparity, but are only broadly selective for stimulus position. For most cells, selectivity for disparity is more than twice as narrow as that for position. These characteristics are highly desirable if we assume that a disparity sensor should exhibit position invariance while encoding small changes in stimulus depth. Complex cells have nearly identical binocular RFs for bright and dark stimuli as long as the sign of stimulus contrast is the same for the two eyes. When stimulus contrast is opposite, the binocular RF also is inverted such that excitatory subregions become suppressive. We have developed a disparity energy model that accounts for the behavior of disparity-sensitive complex cells. This is a hierarchical model that incorporates specific constraints on the selection of simple cells from which a complex cell receives input. Experimental data are used to examine quantitatively predictions of the model. Responses of complex cells generally agree well with predictions of the disparity energy model. However, various types of deviations from the predictions also are found, including a highly elongated excitatory region beyond that supported by a single energy mechanism. Complex cells in the visual cortex appear to provide a next level of abstraction in encoding information for stereopsis based on the activity of a group of simple-type subunits. In addition to exhibiting narrow disparity tuning and position invariance, these cells seem to provide a partial solution to the stereo correspondence problem that arises in complex natural scenes. Based on their binocular response properties, these cells provide a substantial reduction in the complexity of the correspondence problem.
