This paper discusses the research-based origins and modular architecture of an open source geospatial tool that facilitates synchronous individual and group discussions using the medium of a Web map service. The software draws on existing open source geospatial projects and associated libraries and techniques that have evolved as part of the new generation of Web applications. The purpose of the software is discussed, highlighting the fusion of existing open source projects to produce new tools. Two case studies are briefly discussed to illustrate the value an open source approach brings to communities who would remain otherwise outside the reach of proprietary software tools. The paper concludes with comments on the project’s future evolution as an open source participatory mapping platform.

This chapter discusses the concept of open-source picture archiving and communication systems (i.e. PACS), which are low cost, and easy to re-configure and to customize for the specific user needs. Opensource PACS are based on relatively low cost computational resources, and are built by integrating opensource software components that implement basic services of a PACS. These services are described in this chapter, as well as how to integrate them. As an illustration, a PACS based on open-source software components for angiographic studies is discussed. Using the open-source approach, we expect to help diffusing the PACS technology by reducing its development and maintenance costs by using components easily available (e.g. desktop PCs).

Purpose – This paper aims to present the third stage of a research project that aims to develop a bilingual interface for the retrieval of digital images. The requirements and implementation of the search engine are described. Image search engines attempt to give access to a range of online images available on the web. Design/methodology/approach – The strategy of using open-source software components as much as possible was chosen for the advantages of this approach: low initial cost and accessibility to evaluate and develop enhancements independently and driven by research objectives rather than financial viability. Findings – Open-source software components can be used to develop the interface. The implementation of the image search engine and its indexes uses: Apache Solr, AJAX-Solr, jsTree and jQuery. Microsoft Translator web service was integrated into the interface to provide the optional user query translation. Originality/value – The search interface is intended to be an innovative tool for image searchers who are looking for digital images. The search interface gives the image searchers the opportunity to easily access a variety of visual resources and facilitates searching for images in two different languages (English and French).

In this paper, a prototype is proposed of integrating various features and functionalities of different open source GIS software to improve decision-making in small and medium companies. The paper shows possibilities of integrating various open source GIS software to support decision making. Open source software features is combined with the functionalities of GIS such as processing using Quantum GIS, storing and analyzing of spatial data to produce results using PostgreSQL, Providing and sharing Geo-data over the network locally or over the globe using Geoserver, The prototype is based on the three basics features low /free cost of using GIS open source software, simplicity and usability, multiplatform supporting. The integration of open source software is appropriate and successful for the use of companies in the field of GIS, this initiative represents a suitable business solutions that do not consume a lot of money and training to develop the skills of the technicians in this field, therefore, this will open the door for other companies to follow this trend. This prototype provides an opportunity for open source software components to process and store data in databases or shares the results over different networks.
