Accessibility to tourist destinations is an important component in a tourism system, especially for natural tourist destinations located in suburban areas. Good linkage of travel information and physical connections with local transportation services for intercity travel can facilitate more people to travel and promote national tourism destinations. This research takes the popular national tourism destinations and their public transportation service in Taiwan as a research object due to the unavailability of integrated public transport information service. Free Independent Travelers (FIT) demand is growing. This research aims to integrate intermodal public transportation information to support FIT by proposing a seamless way journey planner. In this scenario, the journey planner requires timetable data as input. The Connection Scan Algorithm is used to find the earliest arrival time routes at their destinations. This journey planner is built in PHP language and can complement the official tourism travel information website by Tourism Bureau, MOTC. Hence, the FIT could get the quickest routes to reach the destinations without compiling the public transportation information provided independently.

For models of the use of advanced travel information services (ATISs) and their effect on traveler behavior to be realistic from a behavioral point of view, conceptualizations of travelers’ perceptions of the value of information must be valid. This paper presents a formulation of perceived information value based on the idea that travelers face different types of uncertainty when choosing from and executing travel alternatives, such as routes, travel modes, and departure times. Notions of Bayesian updating are then applied to represent the effect of singular messages from an information service. Acquiring information is deemed valuable to the extent that travelers expect, on the basis of the information received, that their update in perception results in a decrease in the levels of uncertainty they face. Numerical examples that are presented aim to verify the derived measures for uncertainty and perceived information value. This is done by varying proven determinants of uncertainty and ATIS use and investigating the effects on the derived measures for uncertainty of choice and execution and on perceived information value. It appears that trends that occur in the measures developed correspond to common intuition and empirical evidence from the literature on ATIS use; this indicates a certain degree of behavioral validity of these measures. In future research, these measures will be used in simulation and model estimation and applied to study a variety of trends in travelers’ use of information services.

A conceptual modeling framework is proposed, and mathematical submodels for route choice on motorways and urban networks are derived. The models convey the most relevant aspects that play a role in route choice, including learning, risk attitude under uncertainty, habit, and the impacts of advanced travel information service on route choice and learning. To gain insight into the relative importance of the different aspects and processes of route choice behavior, which support the proposed conceptual framework, the models were estimated with data from two experiments carried out with a so-called interactive travel simulator. The latter is a new research laboratory that combines the advantages of both stated preference and revealed preference research. Many relevant contributions on the aforementioned aspects that play a role in route choice can be found in the literature, but a simultaneous consideration of all is lacking. On the basis of these contributions from the literature, a conceptual framework that integrates these aspects was developed. The results from the laboratory experiments indicate that people perform best under the most elaborate information scenario and that habit and inertia together with en route information play a major role in route choice. Learning about route attributes is especially important during the first days but then plays a smaller role than the provided information and the developed habit. Finally, the way information is presented has a great impact on route choice.
