Circular economy (CE) is based on environmental, economic and social dimensions which aim to ensure sustainable development on each step of product creation, transformation and conversion by creating a closed-loop economy. The purpose of the article is to propose a concept of measurement the development of eco-innovations in the context of circular economy, apply and provide empirical evidence based on the data of Baltic Sea Region countries. The study augmented for the models that include the analysis of the circular economy concept, the importance of eco-innovation in the context of circular economy including the accent on recycling, circular material usage, material efficiency and waste management. The multi-criteria decision methods MULTIMOORA and TOPSIS were used to assess the eco-innovation as a pillar of circular economy. Results are useful to add to theoretical building and also evaluate the socio-economic aspect in the concept of circular economy.

This paper discusses the application of the circular economy concept and industrial ecology approach in the context of industrial chemical sites. A real-life case study about the use of bromine as reactant for chemical synthesis and its recycling by Syngenta in Monthey is described in detail. With a recovery yield of 97% it represents a well-established example of closed loop recycling, one aspect of the circular economy. The process leads to significant safety and environmental risk reduction and economic savings in the order of several million CHF per year.

The article analyzes prospects for implementing mechanisms of closed-loop economy (circular economy) at local level based on strengthening material and financial base of communities, expanding their managerial powers due to decentralization. Relevant changes in the approaches to form communities’ socio-economic sphere aimed at gradual transition to circular economy have been pointed out, as well as main priorities in the framework of such transition are identified and characterized. Main directions and measures are suggested, which are aimed at achieving resource efficiency, waste processing, using secondary raw material and minimizing environmental damage in the framework of social and economic activities. Methodological principles for the study were methods of system analysis (to analyze circular economy as holistic system of interconnected elements with specific functions), generalization (to outline main directions and applied propositions for implementing circular economy at the level), comparison (to compare linear and circular models of economy).

The environmental issues and the projected world population increase have brought into light many different terms and concepts. For over 20 years, sustainability attracts the main focus of most researchers; however, recently the concept of circular economy (CE) is considered to be its successor. CE is based on a closed loop supply chain, where waste is minimized and reintroduced into the supply chain, thus requiring a systemic change. In the agri-food sector, the CE principles have many possible applications. This chapter provides a CE perspective for the dairy supply chain by identifying and analyzing the associated technologies and strategies through a literature review taxonomy based on the related stage of the supply chain.
