The structural condition of bridges is generally assessed using manual visual inspection. However, this approach consumes labor, time, and capital, and produces subjective results. Therefore, industries today are using automated visual inspection approaches, which quantify and localize damages such as cracks using robots and computer vision. This paper proposes an instant damage identification and localization approach that uses an image capturing and geo-tagging system and deep convolutional neural network for crack detection. The image capturing and geo-tagging allows the geo-tagging of three-dimensional coordinates and camera pose data with bridge inspection images; the deep convolutional neural network is trained for automated crack identification. The damages extracted by the convolutional neural network are instantly transformed into a global bridge damage map, with georeferencing data acquired using the image capturing and geo-tagging. This method is experimentally validated through a lab-scale test on a wall and a field test on a bridge to demonstrate the performance of the instant damage map.

Compared with other neural networks, Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network has the advantages of simple structure and fast convergence. As long as there are enough hidden layer nodes in the hidden layer, it can approximate any non-linear function. In this paper, the finite element model of a through tied arch bridge is modified based on Neural Network. The approximation function of RBF neural network is utilized to fit the implicit function relationship between the response of the bridge and its design parameters. Then the finite element model of the bridge structure is modified. The results show that RBF neural network is efficient to modify the model of a through tied arch bridge.

Convolutional neural networks have been widely employed for structural health monitoring and damage identification. The convolutional neural network is currently considered as the state-of-the-art method for structural damage identification due to its capabilities of efficient and robust feature learning in a hierarchical manner. It is a tendency to develop a convolutional neural network with a deeper architecture to gain a better performance. However, when the depth of the network increases to a certain level, the performance will degrade due to the gradient vanishing issue. Residual neural networks can avoid the problem of vanishing gradients by utilizing skip connections, which allows the information flowing to the next layer through identity mappings. In this article, a deep residual network framework is proposed for structural health monitoring of civil engineering structures. This framework is composed of purely residual blocks which operate as feature extractors and a fully connected layer as a regressor. It learns the damage-related features from the vibration characteristics such as mode shapes and maps them into the damage index labels, for example, stiffness reductions of structures. To evaluate the efficacy and robustness of the proposed framework, an intensive evaluation is conducted with both numerical and experimental studies. The comparison between the proposed approach and the state-of-the-art models, including a sparse autoencoder neural network, a shallow convolutional neural network and a convolutional neural network with the same structure but without skip connections, is conducted. In the numerical studies, a 7-storey steel frame is investigated. Four scenarios with considering measurement noise and finite element modelling errors in the data sets are studied. The proposed framework consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art models in all the scenarios, especially for the most challenging scenario, which includes both measurement noise and uncertainties. Experimental studies on a prestressed concrete bridge in the laboratory are conducted. The proposed framework demonstrates consistent damage prediction results on this beam with the state-of-the-art models.

There has been an increase in the deterioration of buildings and infrastructure in dense urban regions, and several defects in the structures are being exposed. To ensure the effective diagnosis of building conditions, vision-based automatic damage recognition techniques have been developed. However, conventional image processing techniques have some limitations in real-world situations owing to their manual feature extraction approach. To overcome these limitations, a convolutional neural network-based image recognition technique was adopted in this study, and a convolution-based concrete multi-damage recognition neural network (CMDnet) was developed. The image datasets consisted of 1981 types of concrete surface damages, including surface cracks, rebar exposure and delamination, as well as intact. Furthermore, it was experimentally demonstrated that the proposed model could accurately classify the damage types. The results obtained in this study reveal that the proposed model can recognize the different damage types from digital images of the surfaces of concrete structures. The trained CMDnet demonstrated a damage-detection accuracy of 98.9%. Moreover, the proposed model could be applied in automatic damage detection networks to achieve superior performance with regard to concrete surface damage detection and recognition, as well as accelerating efficient damage identification during the diagnosis of deteriorating structures used in civil engineering applications.
