The purpose of the study was to determine the link between ecosystem degradation and regulating services. It was observed that as the ecosystem cover area decreased, the regulating services offered by the ecosystem also dwindled. The literature of the study covered the ecosystems and causes of degradation and different regulating services. The study was guided by three objectives and they included; to describe the carbon stock trends in Volcanoes National Park; to ascertain the temperature and rainfall patterns in VNP and to determine the soil erosion rates in and around VNP. The methodology of the study considered descriptive research design that was composed of both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Additionally, primary and secondary data were used. The study population was 52 households from two parishes and the sample of 44 households. The data collection tools were questionnaires and interviews while presentation was by use of figures and tables. The findings indicated that in the past three decades, as the population increased, the forest ecosystem area reduced and this affected the regulation of the amount of carbon stock. Also, the results revealed that the rainfall and temperature patterns fluctuate frequently due to the unregulated accumulated carbon dioxide and carbon in the atmosphere. The findings further showed that the rates of soil erosion increased as deforestation increases which led to increased soil erosion and runoff. As a result of soil erosion and runoff, the soil fertility decreased and it affected the crop harvests. In conclusion ecosystem degradation affected the regulation services which also affected the host community. It was recommended that deforestation should be stopped to improve regulating service.

This study discusses the role of government in curbing illegal mining of nickel in North Kolaka. The method used in this study is a qualitative description of the approach. Data collection techniques in this research is observation, interview and documentation. The results showed that: The government's role in the nickel curb illegal mining of all functions is still very weak both in setting / regulation, services, community development, asset management functions of State and public safety, order, security, and protection; Inhibiting factors for the Government to curb illegal mining namely: lack of government coordination, no oversight, public apathy and lack of awareness of the mine owners. The factors supporting government's role in curbing illegal mining nickel miner and openness is the attitude of the community greatly assist the government.  Penelitian ini membahas tentang peran pemerintah dalam menertibkan pertambangan ilegal nikel di Kabupaten Kolaka Utara.  Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan deskripsi kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini adalah observasi, wawancara mendalam dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: Peran pemerintah dalam menertibkan pertambangan nikel illegal dari semua fungsi masih sangat lemah baik dalam pengaturan/regulasi, pelayanan, pemberdayaan masyarakat, pengelolaan asset Negara maupun dari fungsi keamanan, ketertiban, pengamanan, dan perlindungan; Faktor penghambat bagi pemerintah dalam menertibkan pertambangan illegal yakni: tidak adanya koordinasi pemerintah, tidak ada pengawasan, sikap apatis masyarakat serta kurangnya kesadaran pemilik tambang. Sedangkan faktor pendukung peran pemerintah dalam penertiban pertambangan nikel illegal adalah sikap penambang dan keterbukaan masyarakat sangat membantu pemerintah.

Smart Transformers (STs) are being envisioned as a key element for the controllability of distribution networks in a future context of Renewable Energy Source (RES), Energy Storage System (ESS) and Electric Vehicle (EV) massification. Additionally, STs enable the deployment of hybrid AC/DC networks, which offer important advantages in this context. In addition to offering further degrees of controllability, hybrid AC/DC networks are more suited to integrate DC resources such as DC loads, PV generation, ESS and EV chargers. The purpose of the work developed in this paper is to address the feasibility of exploiting STs to actively coordinate a fleet of resources existing in a hybrid AC/DC network supplied by the ST aiming to provide active power-frequency regulation services to the upstream AC grid. The feasibility of the ST to coordinate the resources available in the hybrid distribution AC/DC network in order to provide active power-frequency regulation services is demonstrated in this paper through computational simulation. It is demonstrated that the aforementioned goal can be achieved using droop-based controllers that can modulate controlled variables in the ST.
