On the basis of a concise definition of the literary form of a summary/Summarium/sommaire that has to be distinguished from epitome (e.g. Mk 1.14f.; 8.31) or ‘Geschichtsabriss’ (cf. Acts), this contribution analyzes the literary and theological function of all three summaries that can be found in Mark 1–6 (1.32–34; 3.7–12; 6.54–56). By these summaries the author of the Markan Gospel not only provides a macro-textual structure for his narrative, but also gives a theological interpretation and a narrative emplotment of Jesus' Galilean ministry, and thus carries forward essential parts of the Gospel story.

The analysis of punctuation in philology is mainly carried out with a view to better understand the meaning of the literature concerned. Punctuation is generally believed to play the role of ‘assisting the written language in indicating those elements of speech that cannot be conveniently set down on paper: chiefly the pause, pitch and stress in speech’ (Markwardt, 1942: 156). Most of us often ignore the importance of punctuation in writing systems and tend to believe that punctuation only depends on tradition and the personal styles of writers. In fact, punctuation marks may contribute significantly to the clarity of expression. Many linguists associate punctuation with intonation, but the truth is more complex than that – punctuation marks may affect orthography, morphology, syntactic relations, semantic information, and can even influence textual structure.

The aim of the present study is to describe some of the possible relations between music, language, and verbal picture (or metaphor) which can be found in the drammi per musica of the early 18th century and especially in four allegorical arias of Vivaldi’s opus La Griselda (1735). The paper illustrates some aspects of the cooperation between librettist (Goldoni) and composer (Vivaldi) as well as the importance of the metaphor for the interlinkage of music and language in such arias. It is divided into two parts: The first part presented in the following outlines the bipartite textual structure of the mentioned simile arias (metaphoric vs. literal stanza) which recalls the same two-piece structure of renaissance and baroque emblems. The second part will focus on the interaction of poetic language, verbal image, and Vivaldi’s music in the mentioned simile arias.

This article first examines the textual structure of the Maudgaly?yana Sa?yukta (????? Muqianlian xiangying) of the Chinese Sa?yukt?gama (Taish? vol. 2, no. 99) in conjunction with its P?li parallel. Then it compares the main teachings contained in the two versions. It reveals similarities but also differences in both structure and content.

For over two decades, the localization industry has striven to produce non-culture-specific texts that can be easily localized into most languages. Nevertheless, contrastive studies have shown that certain features of texts can vary between source and target cultures, such as textual structure or genre-specific terminology and phraseology. This study explores these two seemingly contradictory perspectives through a corpus analysis of original and localized Spanish web forms. Following a genre-based approach (Swales 1990; Bhatia 1993; Gamero 2001), the main analysis concentrates on macrostructural differences and the formulation of conventional linguistic forms associated with rhetorical moves. Significant differences are found in the structural, pragmatic, lexical and syntactical configuration of localized texts as contrasted to online forms spontaneously produced in Spanish. The results shed some light on the question of whether texts can be fully internationalized during the development stages and on the inevitable effect of technological and cognitive constraints during the translation process.

The attempt to balance corpora with respect to their future usage led to the introduction of the termexpectations(Králík 2001b). On the bases of several statistical inquiries of such expectations, the textual structure ofSYN2000,which is the synchronic part of the Czech National Corpus (CNC), was proposed and realised. The present article explains the original composition briefly and discusses two new inquiries concerning expectations(A-2001andC-2001).Important corrections for future work on the CNC are suggested. The expectations concerning newspapers changed radically during 1996–2001. Within the same period, an obvious rise of interest in fiction can be detected. The reasons for these developments can be traced to trends in Czech society. Thus, we have proposed a considerable reduction in the proportion of newspaper texts and a large increase in the proportion of fiction texts. According to new searches, more detailed percentages for specific subject areas are suggested.
