Results show the feasibility of regenerating rooting Bidens alba plants from nopaline-type crown galls incited by Agrobacterium tumefaciens containing pTi-T37. Transmission of the tumour marker nopaline synthesis is demonstrated into the fourth generation but decreases in level of expression or loss of the trait occurs. Nopaline synthesis and auxin autotrophy, as markers, can also be differentially lost, making it difficult to demonstrate Mendelian inheritance. Formation of octopine-type tumours on nopaline positive plants occurs in a high percentage of inoculations. Transformed plants show several morphological traits which distinguish them from normal plants: they are smaller, have decreased apical dominance, show hypertrophy of the hypocotyl region, lower nodes, and petiole bases, and frequently form an extra spur of tissue in ray flowers.

In addition to the well-known roles of indoleacetic acid and cytokinin in crown gall formation, the plant hormone ethylene also plays an important role in this process. Many plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) encode the enzyme 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase, which can degrade ACC, the immediate precursor of ethylene in plants, to α-ketobutyrate and ammonia and thereby lower plant ethylene levels. To study the effect of ACC deaminase on crown gall development, an ACC deaminase gene from the PGPB Pseudomonas putida UW4 was introduced into Agrobacterium tumefaciens C58, so that the effect of ACC deaminase activity on tumour formation in tomato and castor bean plants could be assessed. Plants were also coinoculated with A. tumefaciens C58 and P. putida UW4 or P. putida UW4-acdS– (an ACC deaminase minus mutant strain). In both types of experiments, it was observed that the presence of ACC deaminase generally inhibited tumour development on both tomato and castor bean plants.

With the use of bacterial strains, both sensitive and resistant to hydroxyurea the action of this inhibitor on tumour formation on the leaves of <em>Kalanchoe daigremontiana</em> infected with <em>Agrobacterium tumefaciens</em> was tested for five days after inoculation. The results are in agreement with the opinion that the anti-tumour effect of hydroxyurea applied in the induction phase (between 18 and 60 h after inoculation) is the result of its direct action on plant cells, whereas inhibition of tumour formation by the inhibitor in the inoculation period depends on its action on the pathogenic bacteria.
