Acoustic adaptation in pygmy marmoset contact calls: Locational cues vary with distances between conspecifics

AbstractMale budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) are open-ended learners that can learn to produce new vocalisations as adults. We investigated neuronal activation in male budgerigars using the expression of the protein products of the immediate early genes zenk and c-fos in response to exposure to conspecific contact calls (CCs: that of the mate or an unfamiliar female) in three subregions (CMM, dNCM and vNCM) of the caudomedial pallium, a higher order auditory region. Significant positive correlations of Zenk expression were found between these subregions after exposure to mate CCs. In contrast, exposure to CCs of unfamiliar females produced no such correlations. These results suggest the presence of a CC-specific association among the subregions involved in auditory memory. The caudomedial pallium of the male budgerigar may have functional subdivisions that cooperate in the neuronal representation of auditory memory.

Among Gerbillinae rodents, ultrasonic calls of adults of small-sized species are typically higher frequency than those of adults of large-sized species. This study investigates whether a similar relationship can be found in pups of six gerbil species ( Dipodillus campestris , Gerbillus perpallidus , Meriones unguiculatus , Meriones vinogradovi , Sekeetamys calurus and Pachyuromys duprasi ). We compared the average values of acoustic variables (duration, fundamental and peak frequency) of ultrasonic calls (20 calls per pup, 1200 in total) recorded from 6- to 10-day-old pups (10 pups per species, 60 in total) isolated for 2 min at 22°C and then weighed and measured for body variables. The longest calls (56 ± 33 ms) were found in the largest species, and the highest frequency calls (74.8 ± 5.59 kHz) were found in the smallest species. However, across species, call duration (ranging from 56 to 159 ms among species) did not display a significant relationship with pup body size; and, among frequency variables, only the minimum fundamental frequency depended on pup body size. Discriminant analysis assigned 100% of calls to the correct species. The effect of species identity on the acoustics was stronger than the effect of body size. We discuss these results with the hypotheses of acoustic adaptation, social complexity, hearing ranges and phylogeny.

The pygmy marmoset ( Cebuella pygmaea) is the smallest New World Monkey (average body mass of 120–130 g). As such, it faces possible challenges to thermoregulation. Small mammals (e.g., rats) are well known to lower body temperature and metabolism in response to hypoxia; however, small primates have not been studied in this respect nor have, in general, the interactions between metabolism and ventilation. Because little is known about these responses in small primates, it seemed of great interest to assess the hypoxia-induced metabolic depression and drop in body temperature and the associated ventilatory requirements in this species under hypoxic conditions. Exposure to graded hypoxia (30 min at each of 18, 16, 14, 12, and 10% O2) caused body temperature to drop from the normoxic value of 39 to 37°C. This was accompanied by a marked metabolic depression (O2 consumption was ∼68% of the normoxic value, implying a suppression of metabolism greater than that predicted from a typical value of the effect of 10°C change on metabolism of 2–3 times). Minute ventilation declined in parallel to metabolism, maintaining a constant air-convection requirement during hypoxia; thus this species did not show the typical mammalian hyperventilation. Acute exposure to 10% O2 led to a similar overall decline in metabolism and body temperature and qualitative differences in the timing of these changes. The pygmy marmoset shares some similarities in its hypoxic metabolic response with other mammals of similar size yet appears to be unique in its much diminished ventilatory response to hypoxia.

Abstract Introduced feral populations offer a unique opportunity to study the effects of social interaction and founder effects on the development of geographic variation in learned vocalizations. Introduced populations of Monk Parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus) have been growing in number since the 1970s, with a mixture of isolated and potentially interacting populations. We surveyed diversity in contact calls of Monk Parakeet populations in Connecticut, Texas, Florida, and Louisiana. Contact call structure differed significantly among the isolated populations in each state. Contact call structure also differed significantly among potentially interacting nest colonies in coastal Connecticut, and these differences did not follow a geographic gradient. Limited dispersal distances, founder effects, and social learning preferences may play a role in call structure differences.
