Background: Nursery rearing of Penaeus vannamei became inevitable in the Indian shrimp farming industry, since intensification of culture practices in grow-out systems caused nitrogenous wastes accumulation, diseases, mortality and premature harvests resulted in high food conversion ratio, lower production and profits. The nursery rearing in traditional water exchange systems often getting failure because of nitrogenous waste accumulation. Hence, the present experiment was planned to rear P. vannamei in bioflocs systems (BFS) with different salinities and carbon sources. Methods: The experiment was conducted in 0.22 m3 tanks with three different salinity groups viz., 35 ppt, 20 ppt and 5 ppt and in each salinity sugar, molasses used as carbon sources to maintain an estimated C/N ratio of 15:1 and controls without carbon sources. Experimental tanks were stocked @6 post larvae/l, with pre-salinity acclimatized P.vannamei seeds having 0.0029±0.0003g size and nursed for a period of 5 weeks. Result: The nitrogenous waste accumulation was reduced significantly (p less than 0.05), also average body weight and survival rate of the seeds showed significant difference (p less than 0.001) between treatments and controls and within treatments (p less than 0.05). Salinity, carbon sources and their interaction influenced the growth characteristics significantly (p less than 0.01). The present experiment manifested promising results of bioflocs nurseries in rearing of P. vannamei seeds at different salinities.

This trial aimed to analyze the replacement of forage sorghum silage (FS silage) with biomass sorghum silage (BRS 716 silage) in diets for heifers ¾ Holstein x ¼ Zebu on their nutrient intake and digestibility, nitrogen balance, microbial production, feeding behavior, and animal performance. Eight heifers with average age 18±4 months (mo) and average body weight (BW) 271 ± 57 kg were used. The experimental design was double-Latin square, 4×4, being four diets, four experimental periods and four animals. Four experimental diets with 0, 33, 67 and 100% substitution of forage sorghum silage with biomass sorghum silage were used. The roughage:concentrate ratio in the total dry matter (DM) of the diets was 75:25. The fraction “b” of DM was higher in the BRS 716 silage. There was no difference (p> 0.05) for dry matter intake (DMI; p = 0.45) and total digestible nutrients intake (p = 0.76). The dry matter digestibility (DMD), crude protein, ether extract and neutral detergent fiber increased linearly with the inclusion of BRS 716 silage. The feeding times, ruminating and idle have not been changed (p > 0.05). The replacement of FS silage with BRS 716 silage did not modify the average daily weight gain (ADG; p > 0.05; mean 1.30 ± 0.025 kg). Biomass sorghum silage can replace up to 100% forage sorghum silage in the diets of ¾ Holstein x ¼ Zebu heifers.

Empirical evidence of complementary medicine from one community in Kalimantan often uses Ulin fruit (Eusideroxylon zwageri) for medical therapy or as herbal drinks by people with diabetes mellitus. This research aims to identify the antidiabetic compound of Ulin fruit extract against Streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Extraction was performed by maceration method using 96% ethanol, phytochemical test of extracts, extract toxicity test on mice (50 mg/BW to 200 mg/BW), test antidiabetic extract in diabetic rats induced by STZ as much as 70 mg/kgBW with each extract dose of 150, 300, and 600 mg given for 14 days, positive control is Glibenclamide 0.25 mg/kg/day, and the negative control is CMC 1%. Phytochemical test results showed that the extract of Ulin contains alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, and steroids. Ulin fruit extract was not toxic to rats at 50, 150, and 200 mg for three days. Based on the Mann-Whitney test, there was an effect of giving the extract on changes in the average body weight and body temperature of rats during three days of administration (p = 0.000). The results showed novelty that the extract of Ulin fruit affected reducing blood glucose levels in diabetic rats during 14 days of administration (p=0.000).Keywords: Antidiabetic, Eusideroxylon zwageri, flavonoids, streprozotocin, diabetic rats

Abstract In Papua, especially in the Arfak Mountains, one of wild animals that commonly used as a non-animal protein source is frogs. Although it has been consumed by local people for generations, there is no representative information on the characteristics of Arfak frog meat. This study aims to determine the body weight and weight of carcass of Arfak frogs (Rana arfaki) comsumed by the Moiley communtiies in the Arfak Mountains. In addition, this study also attempts to reveal the physical quality and processing techniques of consumed Arfak forg meat. We used descriptive method with observation techniques in the field. The results show that an average body weight of Arfak frogs consumed in Mbenti is 2.53 ± 0.81gr, with an average of carcass percentage 46.77% and non-carcass percentage 53.23%.  The physical quality of the meat is, fresh and looks intact, the color of flesh and muscles is white to yellowish white, has a distinctive aroma, and elastic texture as well as strong muscles. The pH value of fresh meat is an average of 7.03. Various meat processing techniques are practiced including fried, stir-fry, grilled and smoked, and pickling/smoked is more preffered bacuse it is easy and the meat can keep longer as a source of food for household animal protein. Meskipun telah dikonsumsi oleh masyarakat lokal secara turun temurun, sampai saat ini belum tersedia informasi yang representatif tentang karakteristik daging katak Arfak. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bobot badan dan berat karkas katak Arfak (Rana arfaki) yang dikonsumsi masyarakar Moiley di Pegunungan Arfak.  Selain itu juga penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kualitas fisik dan teknik pengolahan daging katak Arfak yang dikonsumsi. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif dengan teknik observasi atau pengamatan langsung di lapangan.  Rataan bobot badan katak Arfak (Rana arfaki) yang dikonsumsi oleh masyarakat di Mbenti yaitu 2,53 ± 0,81gr dengan rataan persentase karkas yaitu 46,77% dan persentase non-karkasnya sebesar 53,23%. Kualitas fisik daging katak Arfak yaitu memiliki karakteristik segar dan tampak utuh, warna daging dan otot putih hingga putih kekuningan, memiliki aroma khas, dengan tekstur elastis serta memiliki otot kuat. Sedangkan nilai pH daging katak Arfak segar yang dikonsumsi oleh masyarakat yaitu rata-rata adalah 7,03.  Teknik pengolahan daging yang dilakukan oleh masyarakat beragam antara lain goreng, tumis, bakar dan asap. Cara asar/asap lebih disenangi karena mudah dilakukan dan dapat memperpanjang masa simpan daging sebagai cadangan sumber pangan protein hewani rumah tangga. Abstract Synbiotics are a combination of probiotics and prebiotics that have a positive effect on livestock performance. The method of giving synbiotics as a growth supplement needs to be studied to get the best results. This study aimed to investigate the effect of administering synbiotic (a mixture of Lactobacillus casei and porang tuber extracts (LCPE) in water or as feed supplement on performance and nutrient digestibility of Tegal duck. The research used a total number of 240-day old ducks with an average body weight of 47.84 ± 6.32 g. The ducks were weighed and distributed into 24 groups. Two experiments (I and II) were carried out simultaneously in the same cage and time. Each experiment used 120 ducks. Ducks were adapted from the age of 1 to 14 days. Parameter data were measure in ducks aged 15 to 42 days. Trial I included 3 groups of dietary synbiotic (0, 10, 20 ml/kg) through feed, while In trial II, the ducks were fed synbiotics (0; 10; 20 ml/L) through water drinking for four weeks. The observed variables included growth performance and nutrient digestibility. The mixture of Lactobacillus casei and glucomannan from porang tuber extract improved nutrient digestibility and duck performance. The best performance and nutrient digestibility is LCPE 20 ml/L drinking water.

Abstract Bandicoot  (Echypera rufescens)  is an alternative source of animal protein and a source of germplasm for humans, especially local communities in Papua. These animals are obtained by hunting and/or setting traps in the community's closest habitat.  The aim of this research was to determine the relationship between body measurements and body weight and carcass weight by utilizing 32 bandicoots, 16 males and 16 females, with a live weight range of 400 - 2000 grams in Yapen Island Regency, Papua. The study was conducted by using an explorative study and the data were analyzed using multiple correlations and regression. The carcass was obtained by slaughtering the head, removing the blood, and then removing the hair by burning (singeing). The average body weight of male bandicoots was 1403 grams and that of females was 598.75 grams, while the average carcass weights of males and females were 1050.06 grams and 415 grams, respectively. The average heart girth of male bandicoots is 23.03 cm and that of females is 17.81 cm, while the average body length of male and female bandicoots is 25.19 cm and 18.91 cm, respectively. The average percentage of male bandicoot carcasses was 73.99 cm and that of females was 69.22 cm. The correlation coefficient between body weight and body measurements was 0.911 while the carcass weight and body measurements were 0.901. The correlation between body weight and carcass of male bandicoots were 0.911 and 0.901. The correlation between body weight and carcass of female bandicoot were 0.702 and 0.747. The regression equation for male bandicoots to estimate body weight (BB) and carcass weight (BK) were BB = (-1705, 594+84,432 X1 +46,234X2) and (BK = -432,092 +71,545 X1 +33,127X2). The female bandicoot regression equations to estimate body weight (BB) and carcass weight (BK) were: (BB = -509,134+39,437 X1 +21,443X2) and (BK= -436,703 +31,720 X1 +15,164X2). Hewan ini diperoleh dengan cara berburu dan/atau  pemasangan jerat di habitat terdekat masyarakat. Penelitian tentang hewan ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara ukuran-ukuran  tubuh dengan  bobot badan dan bobot karkas dengan memanfaatkan  32 ekor bandikut masing-masing 16 ekor jantan dan 16 ekor betina dengan kisaran berat hidup 400 -  2000 gram.  Karkas diperoleh dengan cara bagian kepala disembelih, dikeluarkan darah kemudian dilakukan penghilangan bulu dengan cara dibakar (singeing). Karkas terdiri dari daging, tulang dan lemak setelah kepala, isi rongga dada dan perut, kaki belakang bagian bawah dan kaki depan bagian bawah serta ekor dikeluarkan. Rata-rata bobot badan bandikut jantan adalah 1403 gram dan betina adalah 598,75 gram, sedangkan rata-rata bobot karkas jantan dan betina masing-masing adalah 1050,06  gram dan 415 gram. Rata-rata lingkar dada bandikut  jantan adalah 23,03 cm dan betina adalah 17,81 cm, sedangkan rata-rata panjang badan bandikut jantan dan betina berturut-turut adalah 25,19 cm dan 18,91 cm. Rata-rata persentase karkas bandikut jantan adalah 73,99 cm dan betina adalah  69,22 cm. Koefisien korelasi antara bobot badan  dengan ukuran-ukuran tubuh adalah 0,911 sedangkan antara bobot karkas dengan ukuran-ukuran tubuh adalah 0,901. Korelasi bobot badan dan karkas bandikut jantan adalah  0,911 dan  0.901. Korelasi bobot badan dan karkas bandikut betina adalah sebesar 0,702 dan 0,747. Persamaan regresi bandikut jantan untuk menduga bobot badan (BB) dan bobot karkas (BK) adalah BB = (-1705, 594+84,432 X1 +46,234X2 dan BK = -432,092 +71,545 X1 +33,127X2. Persamaan regresi bandikut betina untuk menduga bobot badan (BB) dan bobot karkas (BK) adalah BB = -509,134+39,437 X1 +21,443X2 dan BK= -436,703 +31,720 X1 +15,164X2. Being endemic to Borneo, the Earless monitor, Lanthanotus borneensis (Steindachner, 1878) is rarely found in its habitats due to its cryptic behavior. We provide care for confiscated animals in the Reptile House of Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense (MZB) in Cibinong, West Java, Indonesia since 2014. Little is known on its natural prey but from scattered descriptive reports. This study is aimed at documenting the feeding behavior of ten captive Earless monitors and events of predation on frogs. We set up two experiments, one with meat of Rice Field Frog, Fejervarya limnocharis, and the other with live frog of the same species. Our recorded observations ran for four weeks for the frog meat feeding experiment and followed by the frog predation experiment. Our results showed that lizards constantly accepted frog meat. Lizards tended to feed before sunset for a short period of time on the muddy soil surface, although a few individuals inconsistently fed under water. The average body mass for these lizards increased by 4.29 g and average SVL by 0.45 cm. We recorded predation on frogs in three out of ten individuals observed during this study. If F. limnocharis is confirmed to occur in the natural habitats of L. borneensis, it is possible that this frog species is among the natural prey for Earless monitors. Further studies on its natural diets should be conducted to gain in-depth knowledge essential for generating effective captive husbandry for this nationally protected species in Indonesia.

Background: To determine the clinical outcomes following fibula nail fixation and to identify the indication for the use of fibula nails in lower limb fractures. Methods: Retrospective study of adult patients from 2 major trauma centers (MTCs) and 9 trauma units (TUs) who underwent fibula nail fixation for AO/OTA 44 fractures between January 1, 2018, and October 31, 2020. Outcome measures included infection, metalwork complications, nonunion or malunion, time to union, and length of inpatient hospital stay. Results: Ninety-five patients were included, with a mean age of 66 years; 57.9% of patients were female. The average body mass index was 30. Sixty-nine patients (72.6%) sustained a Weber B and 24 (27.4%) sustained a Weber C fracture. In addition, 26.3% were open fractures and all patients had soft tissue compromise affecting the lateral malleolus. The calculated infection rate for fibula nail was 4.2% and metalwork complication rate was 5.2%. The nonunion and malunion rate was 8.4% and rate of removal of hardware was 2.1%. The average time to union was 12.5 weeks, and length of inpatient stay was 9.4 days (SD 10). Conclusion: This multicenter study demonstrates that use of a fibula nail appears to be a safe approach to treating patients who have a physiologically higher risk of surgery, poor skin condition, and a complex fracture pattern.

Purpose. To study the possibility of obtaining highly productive intergeneric salmonid hybrids between rainbow trout and brook trout; brown trout and brook trout; rainbow trout and brown trout, as well as to develop methodological approaches and determine of optimal variants of hybrid crosses. Findings. In order to obtain intergeneric hybrids, we used six variants of hybrid crosses with brood fish of three salmonids belonging to three families (Salmo, Oncorhynhus, Salvelinus). The study used age-4 female rainbow trout with average body weight of 3296.8 g, Fork length was 62.6 cm, and the average working fecundity was 7420 eggs. Age-3 rainbow trout males had an average body weight of 1613 g and an average body length of 49.8 cm; age-3 brown trout females had an average body weight of 453.8 g and average working fecundity of 1540 eggs, and males had an average weight of 458.7 g; age-3 brook trout females had an average weight of 809.7 g and a length of 38.9 cm with working fecundity of 1732 eggs, and age-4 males had an average weight of 1212.8 g and an average body length of 46.0 cm. Twelve variants of fertilization were used: six variants at normal water temperature and six variants after a temperature shock. Under natural conditions, the creation of intergeneric hybrids is almost impossible, except for variants between brown trout and brook trout, which is due to the similarity of their biology. However, the efficiency of this cross is low and economically impractical for fish farmers. When applying the temperature shock during fertilization, hybrids proved to be the most effective, where females were rainbow trout, and males were brook trout and brown trout. The average weight of young-of-the-year intergeneric hybrids was, depending on the species of fish, from 8 to 54 g. The highest results were obtained for the creation of hybrids where following broodstock was used: ♂brook trout Х ♀brown trout; ♂brown trout Х ♀rainbow trout. In these variants of crossbreeding, the survival rate of young-of-the-year during the period of cultivation was 94.8 and 92.8%, respectively. In particular, the above hybrids did not suffer from infectious diseases during the growing period. Originality. New data on the development of methods for obtaining viable offspring of newly created hybrids were obtained, and the optimal variants of crossing between females and males of these salmonids were determined. Practical value. The results can be used for artificial breeding of salmonids in specialized farms that will allow obtaining high quality products and reducing their costs.
