This report concerns the activities developed by the Mental Health and Social Exclusion (MHSE) Network, an initiative supported by the Mental Health Europe (World Federation of Mental Health). We report some data from the preliminary survey done in five capital cities of the European Union (Madrid, Copenhagen, Brussels, Lisbon, and Rome). The main aim of this survey was to investigate, from a mostly qualitative point of view, the causal and supportive factors implicated in the situation of the homeless mentally ill in Europe. The results point out the familial and childhood roots of homelessness, the perceived causes of the situation, the relationships with the support services, and the expectations of future of the homeless mentally ill. The analysis of results has helped to identify the different variables implicated in the social rupture process that influences homelessness in major European cities. The results were used as the basis for the design of a more ambitious current research project about the impact of the medical and psychosocial interventions in the homeless. This project is being developed in 10 capital cities of the European Union with a focus on the program and outcome evaluation of the health and psychosocial services for the disadvantaged.

Abstract Background The evidence-base for whole school approaches aimed at improving student mental health and wellbeing remains limited. This may be due to a focus on developing and evaluating de-novo, research-led interventions, while neglecting the potential of local, contextually-relevant innovation that has demonstrated acceptability and feasibility. This study reports a novel approach to modelling and refining the programme theory of a whole-school restorative approach, alongside plans to scale up through a national educational infrastructure in order to support robust scientific evaluation. Methods A pragmatic formative process evaluation was conducted of a routinized whole-school restorative approach aimed at improving student mental health and wellbeing in Wales. Results The study reports the six phases of the pragmatic formative process evaluation. These are: 1) identification of innovative local practice; 2) scoping review of evidence-base to identify potential programme theory; outcomes; and contextual characteristics that influence implementation; 3) establishment of a Transdisciplinary Action Research (TDAR) group; 4) co-production and confirmation of an initial programme theory with stakeholders; 5) planning to optimise intervention delivery in local contexts; and 6) planning for feasibility and outcome evaluation. The phases of this model may be iterative and not necessarily sequential. Conclusions Formative, pragmatic process evaluations can support researchers, policy-makers and practitioners in developing robust scientific evidence-bases for acceptable and feasible local innovations that do not already have a clear evidence base. The case of a whole-school restorative approach provides a case example of how such an evaluation may be undertaken.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the effectiveness of an Interprofessional Education (IPE) programme in eating disorders for mental health practitioners using a case-based learning approach.MethodsA total of 25 mental health clinicians were asked to evaluate their IPE programme as part of training for the National Clinical Programme in Eating Disorders. They completed a Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS), a learner reaction questionnaire after each session and a final open evaluation at 4 months. Non-parametric statistical analysis was employed to analyse learner attitudes and reactions, and qualitative information was coded.ResultsA total of 23 (92%) clinicians from five disciplines participated. Baseline attitudes towards IPE were positive on all RIPLS subscales, and those with prior IPE experience had most positive views as to its benefits for teamwork and patient care (p=0.036). Learner reactions on content, delivery, outcome and structure indicated that individual learning experience was strongly positively endorsed. Change in clinical practice behaviour was reported in terms of communication, clinical activity, outcome evaluation and confidence. Barriers included other demands on time, organisational support, not having enough patients or co-workers to practice skills, and knowledge differentials between learners.ConclusionsIPE using a case based learning approach is an effective and acceptable means of developing specialist training across existing service, team and professional boundaries. It has potential for positive impact on knowledge, clinical behaviour and service delivery. Recommendations include the introduction of IPE group guidelines, wider circulation of learning points and content, and the use of self-competency ratings and reflective logs.

Abstract As Veterans age, they may experience an emergence or exacerbation of stress symptomatology. Later-Adulthood Trauma Reengagement (LATR) is an intervention that provides psychoeducation on the LATR process, teaches mindfulness and coping, facilitates trauma re-integration, and fosters meaning-making in late life. This program evaluation project evaluated the LATR group offered in the Geriatric Mental Health Clinic at VA Boston. Twenty-one Vietnam Veterans with PTSD symptomatology were referred to the group between 2017-2018. Fifteen completed the 10-week group, and 12 completed pre- and post-intervention assessments and offered feedback. At the conclusion of the group, Veterans reported a decrease in depressive and PTSD symptoms. Of the 4 Veterans who endorsed suicidal ideation at the start of the group, 3 reported a decrease post-group. Veterans endorsed slightly more positive appraisals of their military service. Veterans reported that the group offered support, connection, and a sense of belonging with other Veterans, helped increase coping, and increased insight into thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. A suggested improvement to the group was to offer more sessions. Eleven Veterans sought continued mental health services following the group; three newly sought trauma-focused interventions. Four Veterans reported that their trauma-related symptoms were resolved and declined referral. Veterans found the LATR group helpful as evidenced by reduction in symptoms and responses to open-ended questions. A small number sought additional trauma-focused treatment; others reported that their symptoms were resolved and did not require additional treatment. Findings support the continued offering of the LATR group within this clinical setting.

SUMMARYAims– To clarify the acceptability, reliability and factorial validity of a new Italian version of the HoNOS called HoNOS-Rome. Its main innovations are both in design and in contents.Methods– Face validity was assessed by surveying 3 focus groups. Reliability was assessed in 8 different pairs of raters on a sample of 24 patients; construct validity was analysed by factor analysis using a sample of 187 patients at 6 day centres. Acceptability was investigated by means an anonymous questionnaire filled by professionals that were using the instrument.Results– Time of completion was low (range 4–12 minutes), the tool proved very acceptable and the reliability was good (weighted kappa ≥ 0.71 for all items). Factor analysis was consistent with the division of HoNOS–Rome into four sensible factors accounting for 52% of the total variance.Conclusions– The findings indicate that HoNOS–Rome has a satisfactory degree of acceptability, construct validity and reliability, and may promote the routine evaluation of outcomes in mental health services.Declaration of Interest: the authors declare that the study was supported by grant no. 96/Q/T41 of the Italian National Mental Health Project – Istituto Superiore di Sanità – Sub-project: Development and validation of tools for outcome evaluation of mental health services, Italy (Professor P.
