Now a dayAcid attack is growing threat to concrete structures. Using some alternate materials as partial replacement of cement and sand in the concrete is an important factor that enhances the performance of concrete in an aggressive environment. In this present study, the cement is replaced with silica fume by 10 % and the sand is replaced with manufactured sand up to 50%. The selection of these replacement materials involves a balance between economy and durability. The specimens are immersed in 2% concentration of both acids such as sulphuric acid and hydro chloric acid at 28 days. The grade of concrete is M30. From the results, it is observed that the concrete containing 10% silica fume and 40% manufactured sand has the better performance in acid environment.

Abstract In practice concrete structures are often exposed to various environmental impacts which determine strongly durability of concrete and concrete structures. Costs of restoration of damaged concrete structures may be extremely high, in some cases higher than demolition and rebuilding. Not only real costs and financial investment for repair measures may be exorbitant, but limited use and negative impacts on the environment have to be taken into consideration too. In this paper a concept to reach sufficient durability is being developed in which technical, ecological and economical requirements are implied. For the realisation of this concept cement-based coatings with particular high resistance against chloride penetration and carbonation play a central role. It will be shown in this contribution that this type of coatings can protect the load bearing structure in an efficient way for a predetermined period. In this way long-term durability of concrete structures and reinforced elements exposed to aggressive environment can be achieved in both an economic and ecologic way.

AbstractThere are large amounts of reinforced concrete structures that have undergone damage from corrosion at their operational stage. The Eurocodes and national standards do not contain any guidelines for designing primary protection and repair systems for reinforced concrete structures. Our research shows the economic feasibility of designing reinforced concrete structures that can interact with an aggressive environment, taking into account the kinetics of concrete corrosion. Optimal design methods can be used to obtain the most economical solutions. We have developed a quantitative methodology for the design of the primary protection of reinforced concrete structures.

In recent years, the rapid deterioration of various reinforced concrete structures has been widely recognized as worldwide problem. Acidic environments are very aggressive to concrete structures, as well as promote their degradation. The aim of this experimental study is to make a comparative analysis of the behavior of mortars prepared by cement (CPJ-CEM II/A) and composites of different percentage by weight of polymer. It highlights the influence of PET on the durability of these mortars. After 28 days of curing specimens in water, they are put in acid solutions of the same concentration 3% (HCl, H2SO4, H3PO4and HNO3). Weights tests measuring are made at different ages. The results demonstrate the beneficial effect of the addition of PET in the modified materials against chemical attack by various acids. The formations which appear such as different calcium salts were determined by X-ray diffraction. These results take into account the recycling of plastic waste in the manufacture of modified mortars against aggressive environment.
