Gato doméstico macho de cinco meses de edad con taquipnea, dificultad respiratoria y patrón restrictivo con un patrón intersticial no estructurado generalizado observado en el estudio radiográfico de campos pulmonares.Hallazgos clínicos. El diagnóstico se obtuvo mediante la observación de larvas de Aelurostrongylus abstrusus en el lavado traqueobronquial y se corroboró en heces por la técnica de Baermann seriada.Tratamiento y evolución. Se eligió un esquema de tratamiento con doxiciclina a 5 mg/kg vía oral cada 12 h por quince días; fenbendazol 50 mg/kg con pamoato de pirantel 20 mg/kg y prazicuantel 5 mg/kg vía oral cada 24 h por tres días consecutivos; prednisolona a 1 mg/kg vía oral cada 12 h dosis reducción por quince días; omeprazol a 1.25 mg/kg vía oral cada 12 h por diez días y pipeta tópica de imidacloprid 10 % y moxidectina 1 % al cuarto día de iniciado el tratamiento. El paciente mostró mejoría clínica.Pruebas de laboratorio. Los estudios radiográficos de los días 37 y 143 de evolución y el resultado negativo del estudio coproparasitoscópico por la técnica de Baermann seriada los días 53 y 143 de evolución corroboraron la mejora clínica; así el tratamiento fue efectivo.Relevancia clínica. Este es el segundo caso informado en México de Aelurostrongylus abstrusus en gatos domésticos y en una ciudad diferente a la del primer caso.  Abstract Case description. A 5-month-old, male, indoor-outdoor domestic shorthair cat from Mexico City with cough, tachypnea and respiratory distress. Thoracic radiographs revealed a generalized unstructured interstitial pattern. Diagnostic and interpretation. Diagnosis of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus was obtained by observing larvae in a tracheobronchial lavage sample and corroborated through Baermann funnel technique.Treatment and clinical response. The chosen treatment scheme was doxycycline at 5 mg/kg orally every 12 h for 15 days; fenbendazole 50 mg/kg with pyrantel pamoate 20 mg/kg and praziquantel 5 mg/kg orally every 24 h for 3 consecutive days; prednisolone at 1 mg/kg oral every 12 h reduction dose over 15 days; omeprazole at 1.25 mg/kg orally every 12 h for 10 days and topical imidacloprid 10% and moxidectin 1% pippete at fourth day of treatment. The patient had clinical improvement.Laboratory tests. The patient improvement was corroborated by the radiographic studies on days 37 and 143 of evolution and in the coproparasitoscopic study, by serial Baermann technique, negative on day 53 and 143 of evolution.Clinical relevance. This is the second case report of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in domestic cats in Mexico, happening in a different city from the first case.

The hormone oxytocin is released by the neuropituitary gland through stimulation of the neurons of the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus. In order to determine the physiological concentrations of this hormone in domestic cats, blood samples were collected from 15 male animals (Felis silvestris catus) during the pre- and post-puberty periods (at four and eight months of age, respectively). Oxytocin determination was accomplished by radioimmunoassay. The average oxytocin concentrations measured in the pre- and post-puberty periods were 2.54±0.24 (μg/dL) and 2.53±0.28 (μg/dL), respectively, and there were no statistical differences between these measurements. Because there are few literature on the analysis of this hormone, especially in the case of male Felis silvestris catus, more studies on the influence of oxytocin on the physiology and reproduction of this species should be conducted under maintenance and situations of stress (such as transportation), and other routine events.

ABSTRACT Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) of domestic cats (ERV-DCs) are one of the youngest feline ERV groups in domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus); some members are replication competent (ERV-DC10, ERV-DC18, and ERV-DC14), produce the antiretroviral soluble factor Refrex-1 (ERV-DC7 and ERV-DC16), or can generate recombinant feline leukemia virus (FeLV). Here, we investigated ERV-DC in European wildcats (Felis silvestris silvestris) and detected four loci: ERV-DC6, ERV-DC7, ERV-DC14, and ERV-DC16. ERV-DC14 was detected at a high frequency in European wildcats; however, it was replication defective due to a single G → A nucleotide substitution, resulting in an E148K substitution in the ERV-DC14 envelope (Env). This mutation results in a cleavage-defective Env that is not incorporated into viral particles. Introduction of the same mutation into feline and murine infectious gammaretroviruses resulted in a similar Env dysfunction. Interestingly, the same mutation was found in an FeLV isolate from naturally occurring thymic lymphoma and a mouse ERV, suggesting a common mechanism of virus inactivation. Refrex-1 was present in European wildcats; however, ERV-DC16, but not ERV-DC7, was unfixed in European wildcats. Thus, Refrex-1 has had an antiviral role throughout the evolution of the genus Felis, predating cat exposure to feline retroviruses. ERV-DC sequence diversity was present across wild and domestic cats but was locus dependent. In conclusion, ERVs have evolved species-specific phenotypes through the interplay between ERVs and their hosts. The mechanism of viral inactivation may be similar irrespective of the evolutionary history of retroviruses. The tracking of ancestral retroviruses can shed light on their roles in pathogenesis and host-virus evolution. IMPORTANCE Domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus) were domesticated from wildcats approximately 9,000 years ago via close interaction between humans and cats. During cat evolution, various exogenous retroviruses infected different cat lineages and generated numerous ERVs in the host genome, some of which remain replication competent. Here, we detected several ERV-DC loci in Felis silvestris silvestris. Notably, a species-specific single nucleotide polymorphism in the ERV-DC14 env gene, which results in a replication-defective product, is highly prevalent in European wildcats, unlike the replication-competent ERV-DC14 that is commonly present in domestic cats. The presence of the same lethal mutation in the env genes of both FeLV and murine ERV provides a common mechanism shared by endogenous and exogenous retroviruses by which ERVs can be inactivated after endogenization. The antiviral role of Refrex-1 predates cat exposure to feline retroviruses. The existence of two ERV-DC14 phenotypes provides a unique model for understanding both ERV fate and cat domestication.

SUMMARYA critical role of functional morphology is to demonstrate form—function relationships that can then be used by evolutionary biologists to infer the evolutionary history of the structure in question. Tests of theoretical expectations about the effects of many aspects of morphology/physiology on locomotor performance have had very mixed results. If systems such as jumping can be shown to reliably predict performance from morphology, this would provide a foundation upon which hypotheses for the evolutionary origin of certain morphologies can be generated. The present study examined whether a relationship exists between maximum takeoff velocity(TOV) and several carefully chosen morphological and physiological traits in domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus). Based on the contributions of extensor muscle work to increasing the kinetic and potential energy of the center of mass (CM) during takeoff, we predicted that maximum TOV would be dependent upon relative limb length, relative extensor muscle mass, body mass and the percentage of fast-twitch muscle fibers. Both maximum TOV and this series of traits were measured in 18 cats. We found that variation in cat maximum TOV is significantly explained by both hind limb length and fat mass relative to lean body mass, but not by extensor muscle mass relative to lean mass or fast-twitch fiber content. The effect of body fat mass is pervasive because it reduces the proportion of muscle mass/body mass and thus increases the muscle work invested in increasing the CM potential energy as compared with kinetic energy during takeoff.
