The characteristics of olfactory memory during development were investigated and the hypothesis that the pleasantness of smells may be affected by previous associations with pleasant or unpleasant objects or events was tested. This type of emotional memory was compared in the immediate and long-term recognition of olfactory stimuli. Children from three different age groups (mean ages: 6 years 6 months; 8 years 9 months; and 10 years 5 months) were subdivided into two groups. One group was presented with six different odours, each with a slide depicting a pleasant picture. The other group was presented with the odours accompanied by unpleasant pictures. Immediately after stimulus presentation the subjects underwent a recognition test. One month later the subjects underwent a second recognition test, at the end of which they were required to give an evaluation of the pleasantness of each odour on a nine-point scale. At no age level did the pictures matched to the odours affect the recognition score. Olfactory memory varied with age, chiefly because memory decay increased with age, perhaps because of greater proactive interference. With increasing age more rapid decay was set against better immediate recognition. The hypothesis that the hedonic characteristics of odours are partially learned and are affected by events experienced in other modalities was supported.

Analysis of diazinon residues in cabbages up to 14 days after the final spray application, showed an initial period of rapid decay followed by a period of slower decay, which approximates to first order kinetics. The Australian maximum residue level of 0.7 mg kg-1 diazinon for the whole cabbage was reached in 2-3 days in summer and 7-8 days in winter. The recommended Australia 14-day withholding period, combined with marketing of hearts alone, conformed to Japanese marketing requirements of 0.1 mg kg-1.

Thoron exhalation rate can be obtained through the combination of the ?accumulation chamber? technique and RAD7. Thoron?s rapid decay causes the intake path and the air flow rate to become important factors in calibration. In field conditions, since the flow rate of the internal pump in RAD7 will change as the voltage of the battery decreases, the big drying tube is more suitable for a long measurement than the small drying tube. We developed the method for recalibration of the thoron concentration reading of RAD7 based on the calibration factor for 222Rn, and obtained the thoron exhalation rate from soil surface near by the Radon Laboratory of the University of South China. This method can be applied to develop and improve instruments for measuring the radon exhalation rate.

Studies and research have been developed around the world on environmental pollution. Among the most diverse types of pollutants, textile dyes have attracted attention in the Brazilian Northeast. These compounds, besides being persistent, resist to the conventional treatments applied in the wastewater treatment plants. Thus, the present study evaluated the degradation of the mixture of direct red 23, direct red 227 and direct orange 26 dyes by advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). It was observed that the homogeneous AOPs were more efficient, being able to degrade 100% of the chromophoric groups after the optimization of the variables [H2O2], [Fe] and pH. The reaction kinetics for the photo-Fenton process followed a pseudo-first order non-linear model, with rapid decay of the concentrations in the first 60 min. Aiming to have a methodology capable of predicting the degradation efficiency for the studied processes, it was verified that the artificial neural networks MLP 4-9-3 and MLP 5-6-3 well represent the data from the homogeneous and heterogeneous processes, respectively. A toxicity study was carried out using seeds, bacteria and microcrustaceans and it was found that the intermediate compounds formed during the treatment process act differently for each of them.
