Hydrolytic degradation of commercially available 3D printing filament, i.e. poly (lactic acid) with broad molecular weight distribution was induced by incubating 3D-printed parts in deionized water at 3 temperatures. Small changes in orthogonal dimensions occurred due to relaxation of printing stresses, but no mass or volume loss were detected over the time-frame of the experiments. Molecular weight decreased while polydispersity remained constant. The most sensitive measure of degradation was found to be nondestructive, small-amplitude oscillatory tensile measurements. A rapid decay of tensile storage modulus was found with an exponential decay time constant of about an hour. This work demonstrates that practical monitoring of commercially available PLA degradation can be achieve with linear viscoelastic measurements of modulus.

AbstractAn alternative hybrid sigma-pressure terrain-following coordinate is presented here that provides smoother coordinate surfaces over terrain by allowing a more rapid decay of the influence of smaller-scale topographic structures with height. This is accomplished by first defining a reference surface pressure that includes the influence of the underlying topography. A smoothed version of this reference surface pressure is then created that represents the larger scale features of the topography, while the deviations from the smoothed profile contain the smaller-scale terrain structures. In the hybrid-sigma coordinate formulation presented here, the influences of these deviations in the reference surface pressure from their smoothed values are removed more rapidly with increasing height, thereby producing smoother coordinate surfaces. Testing this approach using several idealized simulations demonstrates a significant reduction in the artificial circulations compared to those arising with the basic sigma or the conventional hybrid sigma coordinate, confirming the beneficial aspects of the smoothed hybrid coordinate surfaces. The smoothed hybrid sigma-pressure coordinate proposed here provides flexibility in reducing the influence of the terrain on the coordinate surfaces and can be easily substituted for the basic hybrid sigma-pressure coordinate.

Deceased public figures are often said to live on in collective memory. We quantify this phenomenon by tracking mentions of 2,362 public figures in English-language online news and social media (Twitter) 1 y before and after death. We measure the sharp spike and rapid decay of attention following death and model collective memory as a composition of communicative and cultural memory. Clustering reveals four patterns of postmortem memory, and regression analysis shows that boosts in media attention are largest for premortem popular anglophones who died a young, unnatural death; that long-term boosts are smallest for leaders and largest for artists; and that, while both the news and Twitter are triggered by young and unnatural deaths, the news additionally curates collective memory when old persons or leaders die. Overall, we illuminate the age-old question of who is remembered by society, and the distinct roles of news and social media in collective memory formation.

AbstractCancer patients are more susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection and generally have higher mortality rate. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG is an important consideration for the patients in this COVID-19 pandemic. Recent researches suggested the rapid decay of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in the general population, but the decline rate of the antibodies in cancer patients was unknown. In this observational study, we reported the clinical features of the 53 cancer patients infected by SARS-CoV-2 from Wuhan, China and tracked the presence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in the patients for more than 12 months. We found the duration (days) of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG in the patients was significant longer in chemotherapy (mean: 175; range: 75 to 315) and radiotherapy groups (mean: 168; range: 85 to 265) than in non-chemo- or radio-therapy group (mean: 58; range: 21 to 123) after their recovery from COVID-19. We also used single-cell RNA sequencing to track the immunologic changes in a representative patient recovered  from COVID-19 and found that CD8 + effective T cells, memory B cells and plasma cells were persistently activated in the patient undergoing chemotherapy. Together, our findings show that chemotherapy and radiotherapy might be beneficial to extend the duration of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG.

Estimating the longevity of an individual's immune response to the Sars-Cov-2 virus is vital for future planning, particularly of vaccine requirements. Neutralising antibodies (Nabs) are increasingly being recognised as a correlate of protection and whilst there are many studies which follow the response of a cohort of people, each study alone is not enough to predict the long term response. Studies use different assays to measure Nabs making them hard to combine. We present a modelling method which can combine multiple datasets and can be updated as more detailed data becomes available. Combining data from six published datasets we predict that after a short period of rapid decay the half-life of the NAb response is approximately one year giving optimism that the response will be long-lived.

AbstractA growing body of evidence indicates that information can be stored even in the absence of conscious awareness. Despite these findings, unconscious memory is still poorly understood with limited evidence for unconscious iconic memory storage. Here we show that strongly masked visual data can be stored and accumulate to elicit clear perception. We used a repetition method across a wide range of conditions (Experiment 1) and a more focused follow-up experiment with enhanced masking conditions (Experiment 2). Information was stored despite being masked, demonstrating that masking did not erase or overwrite memory traces but limited perception. We examined the temporal properties and found that stored information followed a gradual but rapid decay. Extraction of meaningful information was severely impaired after 300 ms, and most data was lost after 700 ms. Our findings are congruent with theories of consciousness that are based on an integration of subliminal information and support theoretical predictions based on the global workspace theory of consciousness, especially the existence of an implicit iconic memory buffer store.
